Yikes.
Wow. SMH

.. Knew the threats would be coming but not that much.

Well, that might be as close as NZ ever comes to winning a WC game.

They're getting absolutely dominated this half, though. Pirlo's absence is palpable. Italy's offense is completely predictable, and when they try to be creative they're off by miles.

No matter the team, it sucks being on the wrong end of an upset. Italy slacking

The Team Director resigned not the coach.

Players are against Anelka being kicked off the team and supposedly refused to practice as a result.

There's mystery surrounding who the person was that leaked details of the argument between Anelka and the coach. Players are calling him a traitor. Rumors have it that it's the fitness coach that sang.

EFF ITALY!!! ha ha.

Great point for NZ. The goalie did his thing

Did you actually watch the game, or are you just retelling old stereotypes? De Rossi was in perfect position to score and was prevented from heading the ball because a NZ defender had a fistful of his jersey.
Anyway, Italy's been disappointing, but they'll still go through by beating Slovakia. Full scenarios updated on the blog.

"Little tug...you're Italian you have to go down"
woooo
These announcers going in on all of these divers

What game were you watching? Unless De Rossi is over 7 feet tall he would never have made it to that ball. Yes, his jersey was being held. However, the ref should use a bit of common sense. If  a penalty was given every time an opponents jersey was being held in the box then soccer scores would look more like American football scores.

Italy's entire strategy (up until maybe the last 10-15 min) was diving and hoping to score off of a set piece. It's undeniable. Camoranesi was the only one that consistently put forth any effort in order to create a viable attack.

If you though de Rossi had any chance at that ball, especially at the angle that the ball was coming in at and the angle that Rossi was coming in at, then you must have the average depth perception of a woman. The fact of the matter is that ref's who don't officiate in the major Euro leagues where this sort of diving is prevalent do not have enough experience to distinguish between real fouls and dives. The Italians can sniff out a weak, gullible ref from across the pitch.

Right, that's why the NZ defender wasn't even complaining right? De Rossi had his man beat on the back post, was about to rise for the header and was prevented from doing so because he was being held. That's a penalty under the rules of soccer, no matter how you try to spin it. If a defender is dumb enough to grab a hand full of jersey from behind when he's clearly beat, then yes, there should be a penalty every time.
I love the creativity in the spinning though. The Italians knew the ref was inexperienced so they targeted him for diving. That's rich.

Some soccer fans are so simple and naive. You hear a stereotype, and you just recount it regardless of whether it's actually happening or not. You point out one instance of alleged diving, and you label the whole team's strategy that way. Those shots that Montolivo unleashed were a result of diving right?

And even if De Rossi dove, was it worse than the penalty in the France-Mexico game? Or the one in South Africa-Uruguay? Did you come and start calling Mexico and Uruguay divers after those games? No, because you're basing your "opinions" on stereotypes, rather than actually watching the games to see what's going on.

Persia Fly what's your deal dude? You claim people are on their high horse when they don't share your  opinion on things and then call them naive when they don't see things your way. You sure do whine a lot.

To be fair, I was told I had the "depth perception of an average woman" for my opinion, so it's not like I'm just throwing out barbs unprovoked. My initial post simply stated disagreement.

The notion that Italians dive is a stereotype but it's a true stereotype. Stereotype's are not inherently wrong. Especially when they concern such a limited group as a national soccer team. It's when the stereotype attempts to describe large amounts of people (as in millions and tens of millions of individuals; each with their own unique traits that need to be accounted for) that it becomes skewed.

Technically that is a penalty. However, the ref is allowed a broad range for interpretation. Refs make or break games for teams in soccer. They play a huge role in determining the outcome of games (mostly to do with pace) ; sometimes knowingly and at other times unknowingly. In a game a the FIFA world cup and the trajectory of that ball (as well as Rossi's position) the ref could've used a bit more discretion.

All teams have players that dive. However, with Italy it seems that it's a part of their game (and has been for quite some time). You wan to know a little secret about organized sports? If the ref/ump lets you get away with something you keep on doing. Don't know if you played organized sports but that's how it goes. In the first 5 or 10 min both teams on the pitch test out the ref and see what he will allow or what he won't allow. Some teams do it in terms of rough play (elbows, soft kicks, etc.), others on offside calls (seeing if the sideline judges demand that you're on line with the last defender or allow 1-2 steps,  in behind them)  and the Italians usually test the ref in terms of their diving and dramatics.

That's the definition of a stereotype to me.
