I recall the OG 4s never cracked.  The paint would scuff off with wear, and the white midsole would yellow.  I believe the 3s were the same, however, I never had them in '88, so maybe someone else can attest to that.

Paint didn't start cracking, save for the 2002 IXs, until they switched up the PU midsoles in 05-06.
