Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Denzel is the most overrated actor on here. Sure, dude is talented, but he plays the same 3 roles.

And CP, smh at you for omitting Johnny Depp and Ed Norton.

The best way to compile a list would to do it generationally. I mean, yeah De Niro, Pacino, and Freeman are greats, but for the most part, each of them hasn't done all that much over the past 10 years (I'd say Freeman might have the best resume).

If I had to pick in order:

Johnny Depp
Daniel Day-Lewis
Leo
Sean Penn
Hanks
Ed Norton
Colin Firth
Russel Crowe
Kevin Spacey (He hasn't done much lately, but dude could still deliver an Oscar worthy performance if he wanted)
Brad Pitt
Robert Downey Jr.
Christian Bale
Matt Damon
Casey Affleck
Samuel L
James Franco
Denzel
Will Smith
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Jamie Foxx/Mickey Rourke

Cage
Samuel L
Tommy Lee Jones
Ben Affleck
Robert Downey Jr
Clive Owen
Clooney
Benicio
Cuba
Gary Oldman
Aaron Eckhart
Franco
Casey Affleck
Fishburne

With the "elders" so to speak being

DeNiro
Pacino
Nicholson
Freeman
Ford
Eastwood
Hackman
Pesci
Malcovich
Tom Wilkinson
Mel Gibson

Just movie "stars"

Cruise
Smith
Willis
Keanu
Stallone
Arnold
Walker

Lookin at this, Tom Cruise doesn't get alot of love, he's almost like Will Smith in the way he always puts out 100 million dollar movies, but rarely gets credited for his acting.

Heath Ledger man..........
30t6p3b.gif
his resume was gonna get stupid.  He was gonna go neck and neck with Leo for a long time, maybe even a DeNiro/Pacino like feel for the next 15 years.  We were all robbed.

Man, I forgot about Clooney, Eckhart (check out Thank You For Smoking if you haven't seen it), Michael Douglas and my dude Don Cheadle.
And don't even get me going on Heath, smh. Dude would've went down as one of the all time greats if he didn't die. He improved with every role and managed to always do something different.

The bolded ones are the ones I have seen, at some point I'll need to sit down and go thru them all.  A Knight's Tale was when I really realized he was an up and comer, and he did it again with Ball, and Brokeback pretty much gave a big F you to anybody who would ever doubt what he could do if wanted, and Candy friggin blew me away.

When I heard the news that he was going to be Joker and people were blasting the choice, I was on the phone saying what a brilliant move it was.   I knew from jump he would be great, and he BY FAR exceeded my expectation for that role.  He was incredible.  I know people say it's because we were all sad, and knew what had happened to him in real life and all that, NO, he was flawless in that role.  There was no Heath in that picture.  He was Joker.  May sound corny, I don't really care, that kid was somebody else for two and a half hours of film.  Nobody will change my mind otherwise.

RIP

Cruise is a far better actor than Smith - wider range of roles, more risks, etc. I also don't know who is not crediting Cruise for his acting either. If anything, it's his off-camera actions that have overshadowed his talents.

Sorry but how did this become a movie critic thread?

Anyways, I just got, "They Call Me Coach." - John Wooden. Has anyone read this?

Just got a lil sidetracked is all.   Heath was in A Knights Tale, about Jousting, Will Smith, in Ali, boxing, Tom Hanks, A League of Their Own, chicks baseball.  We're very thorough in here is all.

I've never read much of the older stuff like Wooden, or Red, or Wilt or any of that era.  Maybe because I never saw/watched/followed them.  I'm sure they're insightful, and good, but it seems to me much of it would be over my head wouldn't it?  When you read Wooden, and he gives examples or tells stories, do you know any of the people he's speaking of other then Kareem or Walton?

Kool, whenever I speak with people about great actors, I don't ever hear anyone say Cruise.  So far in here, nobody had mentioned him until I brought his name up.  I can't even think of much oscar buzz I've ever heard about him, so in general, I tend to think of him as a decent actor, but hasn't done anything truly special.  *shrugs*

He was praised for his performance in Born on the Fourth of July, and deservedly so. On top of that he had solid - and varied - roles in Vanilla Sky, Magnolia, Collateral, The Last Samurai, Rain Man, Eyes With Shut. He's been nominated for an Oscar three times, which is a lot when you consider that he is a big-budget movie star. I don't think he's an all-time great, but his body of work has reach a point where I'm always curious about the kind of roles he will choose and the kind of performance he will give.

Hey, I don't dislike the guy at all, I like him fine, I merely meant he wasn't considered "up there" with alot of the other names that get mentioned among best actors.

His body of work is SOLID, there is no debating that.  Everything he touches is 100 mil, and he has a wide variety of movies.  Hell, I probably have 20 of his alone in my collection.

But the original question I asked was a list of top 10 actors, would you personally put him in that list?  Who would you put him above?
