Paris 2024 Summer Olympics: Thank you, France!🥇🥈🥉

Let's be real... lack of interest is what's stopping people supporting year round.

Which is at the root of all this Noah commentary.

No matter how many yu gi oh cards he pulls out he's never going to be regarded like Bolt (who was transcendent) or NBA stars.

I wouldn’t agree with this point because everyone tuned in just to watch him lose in the 100 meter, NBA players included. People are still typing out the words he deserves all the hates he gets a week after the games are long gone.

Bolt is one of a kind and if he were American, he’d face the same issues about lack of support outside of Olympic years.

I knew Raygun getting to the Olympics had to be because of favoritism or nepotism type ****. She needs to give a public apology, distance herself from Breaking and Hip Hop, unless it’s to use her connections to help out legitimate breakers in Australia. Otherwise, she should become a pariah in all Hip Hop circles.

I doubt that’s going to happen. I think she’s a Gender/Feminist Scholar. What we will get is a pity party, a long essay talking about how she was unfairly treated because of her gender, a book deal and a movie or series deal.

My wife read out parts of a really interesting article the other day but we couldn’t find it later - it does seem to be some sort of protest and part of her academic role.

This is interesting too:

to act as though him sharing an opinion on championship status is what stopping people from supporting Track & Field as a whole is nonsensical.
FWIW, I completely agree with this.
Comes off as very "Shut up and dribble."

For the casual fan i think the lack of variables is the major issue with singular track events.

While the preparation is complex what happens on race day is 8 men / women running hard to the finish.

There's no 50 piece, no triple doubles, no flagrant fouls, no buzzer beaters, no botched calls etc etc.

Unless you're running a WL, NR or WR time you're not cracking the mainstream sports news cycle at all.
The premier event lasts 10 seconds and happens every 4 years. That's the super bowl of track and field

My comments were relating to the general levels of year round interest in track and field.

As you said we're a week removed from the biggest athletics competition on the calendar when the other major sports are in their off seasons.

This will be an after thought when football season starts.

That being said regardless of how people feel about him Lyles is still good for the sport. Bolt set the bar so high for the mens sprints that you have to generate interest somehow if running 9.5 & 19.1 isn't on the cards.

Are you aware that Track Field doesn’t ONLY hapoen every 4 years? These athletes are competing year round. Nothing is stopping anyone from showing actual support outside of Olympic years. So to act as though him sharing an opinion on championship status is what stopping people from supporting Track & Field as a whole is nonsensical.

As for the “pomps and circumstance,” if you supported Track & Field outside of the Olympic years, you’d be aware that Lyoes jumping around before a race is akin to LeBron throwing powder in the air before tip off.

Yeah I'm 1 of the small amount of Americans that will be watching the rest of the 5 Diamond League meets left for the rest of the season

Im probably the only one who does not give 1 damn about Raygun or anything going on with that breaking stuff.

Cant blame him for trying

And we’ll see how Michael Johnson’s new league goes (the swim league unfortunately didn’t last long and soemthing happened with the guy who was financing it)

But track will always have a home in Europe.. but not sure what it would take Americans to legit care about track and swimming outside of Olympic years (probably should include gymnastics too)

If Bolt, Phelps, and Biles can't even get any of the 3 Marquee Summer olympic sports into being close to top 10 spectator sports in America outside of Olympics then I just can't see it happening. I remember back in the day the USA Olympians that would cash in the most on sponsors were actually from the Winter Olympics as corporate brands seen that Figure Skating was the only marquee Olympic Sport that was drawing high viewership outside of Olympics with Women figure skating at least. But figure skating actually plummeted as a spectator sport in the U.S in the mid 2000s with Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski being the last 2 stars for USA. Since then, figure skating shifted to mainly Russia and Japan, and S. Korea only during the Yuna Kim years.

I don’t know if I can really say Phelps and biles legit made that effort outside of world championships and Olympics

Phelps went pro and skipped college even though he trained with bowman at Michigan and then ASU.. but he rarely did short course, meters or yards

Dressel, Peaty and bunch of big names actual went into ISL (the professional swim league).. and they actually tried different stuff.. but something went down with the guy financing it

Bolt obviously ran over Europe and would show up whenever someone covered his appearance fee

Also with the swimmers its like how many of them actually get covered in media outside of swimming here in the U.S? Since the post Phelps and Lochte era all I ever remember seeing is like Ledecky being on Steph Curry's platform before and Regan Smith going to Jake Paul's podcast here in Paris.
