I imagine it's just more of an old school thing for older generations. The convertible was more cool and classic back in the day, so they're finally able to get one after years of wanting it.

I know my Mom bought a 70 (or some year) MG because she always wanted one when she was younger and it was never practical to get until now when she bought it as a project/weekend car. So for some who never had the chance to have the fun/sporty/convertible/youthful car, they get it when they're older.
