The land of Boletaria in Demon's Souls will be plunged into "pure blackness" on Halloween for players connected to the internet. Publisher Atlus' announcement about its sleeper hit can be interpreted to mean that all players will have their world tendency shifted to black for the day (or a little longer), which affects enemy strength and player stats. A pure black tendency can mean that new passages and enemies may also exist.

"World Tendency" in Demon's Souls is another aspect of the challenging RPG that has a significant impact on the player's experience. If you're a new player who happens to pick up the game on Halloween ... don't panic. Yes, the game is hard, but it'll be a little bit more so with the entire world black aligned.

My Take: Is this game THAT good? Any personal reviews on it? I see a lot of you guys playing it on my list

Awesome. SCEA just announced a God of War III Ultimate Edition for the US, to retail at a cool $100.

It's "encased in a high-end sculpted replica of Pandora's Box". Pre-orderers will get a voucher to download the demo.

What's in the box? This is what's in the box:
 • The game.
 • An art book.
 • A director's cut of God of War: Unearthing the Legend, "a full-length movie documentary depicting the history of the God of War franchise."
 • A God of War Trilogy soundtrack and the God of War Heavy Metal EP.
 • Access to the God of War Combat Arena, containing an exclusive environment and up to seven unique challenges, as well as the exclusive Kratos skin, Dominus, all available from PSN.
PR after the break. SCEE just said Euros are to get their own CE. It's out next March.

Now. You love Kratos. Do you love Kratos to the tune of $100?

Borderlands console patches go live, Lilith gets some loving

borderlands5802new.jpg

We felt so bad for Borderlands' stealthy female protagonist, Lilith. While other characters' abilities were in perfect working order, her top-tier "Phase Strike" power was, well, broken. Enemies who experienced the attack began to make fun of Lilith, referring to the maligned ability as "Phase Wrist-Slap" or "Phase Hug," for which her cohorts constantly teased her.

Fret no more, dearest Lilith! Gearbox released a patch earlier today for the PS3 and 360 versions of Borderlands which, in addition to improving load times and fixing a number of small technical snafus (the full list of which are after the jump), also fixes your Phase Strike ability. Just make sure you savor the experience when you first use the renovated power -- the surprise on your combatant's face is going to be delectable.

Patch fixes for PS3

Load times have been improved
Lilith's Phase Strike ability now works as intended
The introductory quests with CL4P-TP should now always progress properly
fixed a bug that caused the digger elevator to be unusable after completing the Find Tannis mission
Weapon mapping to the D-pad should no longer reverse left and right
fixed a crash when ejecting the disc during the autosave warning splash screen
Players in a lobby should no longer experience long loading when starting a game after one player leaves
A bug which caused players and other things in the world to appear incorrectly on clients in networked games has been fixed
fixed a bug in which players gibbed in arena combat disappeared
Changed how space required for saves is calculated
fixed a bug which caused the dollars counter to spin continuously
various localization and other text and tooltip correction

Happy belated birthday to the PS2. It turned 9 years on the 26th...

Here's a little article from gamespot:

PlayStation 2 turns nine

Nine years ago this week, Sony launched the PlayStation 2 in the US, sporting a $299 price tag and a launch-day library of more than two dozen games, including hits like Madden NFL 2001 and Tekken Tag Tournament.

The gaming giant marked the anniversary today with a stat dump celebrating the long-term success of the PS2. According to Sony Computer Entertainment America, the console has a worldwide installed base of nearly 140 million, with a library approaching 10,000 games having sold more than 500 million copies combined.

Although Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's original Xbox ceased production years ago, Sony today declared that the PS2 "shows no signs of slowing down" at the tail end of its 10-year life span. However, with the introduction of the current generation of consoles, its sales have slowed in recent years. According to the NPD Group, the PS2 sold 146,000 last month, down from 173,500 in September 2008 and 215,000 in September of 2007.

The slimline PS2, introduced in 2004, remains available on store shelves for a retail price of $99. The system finally reached the double-digit price point April 1, more than eight years into its life span and nearly five years after the move was first rumored. The low price has helped convince publishers to continue developing for the platform, with DJ Hero and MotorStorm Arctic Edge among recent PS2 releases.

A library of almost 10,000 games!? That's crazy!! Let's see if any of these current consoles make it anywhere near that number...

I got mine on day 1 and I've never had any problems with it. Tekken Tag was my first PS2 game. I still have it...

Don't remember what my first game was, but my favorites for that system were RE4 and GTA:SA.

I wish they could update both for the PS3 as both were better games than the sequels.

Got my PS2 in my office @ work for use as a DVD player.

Quit a game, lose a level.

Quit a game, all your boosters are reset and you must purchase them again.

Quit a game, and your single player save file is wiped.
First DJ Hero DLC Released At $3 Per Mix, Activision Mum On Future Pricing
First-DJ-Hero-DLC-Released-At-3-Per-Mix-Activision-Mum-On-Future-Pricing.jpg

With music games, it makes sense to have downloadable content as soon as the game's released. It doesn't take long to burn through a track list. Activision has wasted no time in distributing the first "mix pack" for DJ Hero (which I reviewed earlier this week over yonder), but the pack's priced at $6 and doesn't include the ability to download individual mixes over Xbox Live or PlayStation Network.

You can download the mixes individually on Wii, however.

The DJ Hero "Extended Mix Pack 01" includes:
 • "All Of Me" by 50 Cent featuring Mary J. Blige vs. "Radio Ga Ga" by Queen
 • "DARE" by Gorillaz vs. "Can't Truss It" Performed by Public Enemy
Even if the mixes were separated on all consoles, the downloadable content boils down to $3 per mix. By comparison, individual Guitar Hero 5 tracks are typically $2 each. When I contacted Activision, the company wouldn't confirm this as the standard price for future content.

"I cannot comment about future DJ Hero downloadable," said Guitar Hero public relations manager Aaron Grant in an e-mailed statement this morning, "but for the DJ Hero downloadable content that has been announced, individual mixes will cost $3."

The "David Guetta Mix Pack," which features three mixes, will be released on November 24.

It sounds like the pricing isn't final. If you think $3 is too much, make your voice heard.

True story: I was prepping this post for this week's episode of Feedback, when I realized that Brian was about to describe what was contained in the leaked Modern Warfare 2 footage this week. I stopped the video player just in time, then decided to get a soda. Came back to my desk, and without thinking I hit "play" and boom: spoiled. I can be forgetful, sometimes. If you don't want to know what happens, pause your player around the 1:00 minute mark and skip ahead to 8:41. As for the spoiler itself...holy crap.

Stuff you shouldn't skip through:
 • Netflix streaming is coming to the PlayStation 3, does that mean we're getting the Sony movies back?
 • How does this affect the multimedia front in the Console War?
 • The group plays dress-up with their digital avatars -- who is for, and who is against?
 • Borderlands has lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of weapons. Is there a real difference between what you use?
 • Did Gearbox miss an opportunity to extend the replayability by mishandling the itemization?
Feedback: Over 17 million permutations since 2009. Shock the world and subscribe:
Spoiler Alert: Leaked Modern Warfare 2 Sequence Sparks Controversy In Australia

Modern Warfare 2 Cryptic Teaser »
http://g4tv.com/assets/flash/videos/vplayerV6.swfhttp://g4tv.com/assets/flash/videos/vplayerV6.swf

A recently leaked scene from Infinity Ward's upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 depicting players (SPOILER ALERT) playing as terrorists has sparked some rather heated discussions since itappeared earlier in the week. (The above video was the original teaser trailer for the game, and it clearly features the audio portion of the scene inquestion.) Shockingly, the Australian Council on Children have called for the game's MA-15+ rating to be re-reviewed, Game Politics reports.

"The consequences of terrorism are just abhorrent in our community," the groups' president Jane Roberts told TheAge, "and yet here we are with a product that's meant to be passed off as a leisure time activity, actually promoting what most world leadersspeak out publicly against. We understand that it's a game but ... we're not far off when you look at the images that you could actually put it on aChannel Nine news report and you'd think maybe that is real."

Australia's most open-minded attorney general, Michael Atkinson (who has single-handedly held back the approval of a R18+ for video games in the country),astutely and reasonably observed, "Expecting game designers to be responsible by not glorifying terrorism will always lead to disappointment."

On the non-loony side of the coin is spokesman for the lobby group Electronic Frontiers Australia, Nicholas Suzor, said, "Films often show thevillain's perspective and, by doing that, they get across the character's story and the heinous nature of people who carry out atrocities. Games, too,are becoming more expressive, and are telling more involved stories."
http://
What's interesting about all of this is that if the board stands by its R15+ rating for the game, that means either it sees no issue with the controversialscene, or the board didn't see the scene before it made its decision about the rating. Either way, as a Classification Board spokesman explained, the boardisn't able to review its own decision, so a formal application to Board will be required if a re-review were to occur.

Even more fascinating is that one of the main reasons the Australian ratings board forced Valve to make significant cuts to Left 4 Dead 2 in order to avoid the game being banned was that the zombieslooked toohuman. So apparently, (SPOILER ALERT) mowing down 100 percent human civilians in MW2 is fine, but mowing down zombified humans is too disturbing? Here's a new slogan I'm trying out: Australia's stance on creative expression - Not Making Sense Since Ever.

Thoughts?
