Man Who Berated Woman For Her Puerto Rico T-shirt Gets Slapped With 2 Hate Crime Felonies

A man who repeatedly berated a woman for wearing a Puerto Rico T-shirt in a Chicago-area park is among the first to come up against Illinois’ new hate crime statute.

Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed video of the June 14 incident, and on Friday approved two felony hate crime charges against Timothy Trybus, 62.

In response to an uptick in hate crimes nationally and statewide, Illinois state lawmakers introduced a bill last year to expand the list of offenses that could be charged and prosecuted as hate crimes, which included acts of intimidation, cyberstalking, and sending obscene messages. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan championed the bill, which was a component of the state’s bipartisan Holocaust and Genocide Commission, formed before the violence at the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last summer.

“Hate crimes have increased at an alarming rate over the past year,” Madigan said. “We must not tolerate crimes committed by individuals who are motivated by hatred or bias against others based on their race, religion, national origin, gender identity, or sexual orientation.”

It passed both chambers unanimously and became law in January. Illinois is one of 45 states plus Washington D.C. that have hate crime statutes. The strength of those laws, and who they protect, vary dramatically between states. Illinois has one of the strongest hate crime statutes, because it protects people from discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disability, and national origin. Indiana, just east of Illinois, has no hate crime statute whatsoever.

For first offenders, a felony hate crime in Illinois can result in a prison term of one to three years and a fine of up to $25,000.

Illinois U.S. Rep Luis Gutierrez, a Democrat and a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, applauded the decision by the state’s attorney to pursue hate crime charges. “There should be consequences. People have to learn there are consequences, especially in the era of Trump,” Gutierrez told the Chicago Tribune. “I really do believe there are people who say to themselves, ‘If Trump can do it, I can do it. Why can’t I go out there and say the things the president says?’”

The president’s critics have linked his rhetoric, especially on immigration, to a recent string of racially charged incidents.

Video of the Chicago-area incident, at Caldwell Woods Park, which went viral this week, shows Trybus verbally accosting a young woman in a T-shirt with the Puerto Rican flag on it. “Why are you wearing that?” he asks. “You’re not gonna change us, you know that! No, the world is not going to change the United States of America. Period!”

A police officer stood nearby and observed the exchange, as the woman, who was recording the whole thing on her phone, asks for his help.

“Can you please get away from me,” the woman says repeatedly as Trybus approaches her. “Officer, I feel highly uncomfortable. Can you please grab him?”

She also explains that she was setting up for her birthday party in Caldwell Woods, for which she had legally obtained a permit for.

Officer Patrick Conner, of Cook County Forest Reserve District, did not intervene and has since been placed on desk duty while his conduct is reviewed.

I disagree with that person who left the zero tip and called him a terrorist.

White terrorism in America are the biggest threat in American society at this moment.Think of all the mass shooting that have occurred within this year.

MLB Pitcher Josh Hader 'Deeply Sorry' for Past Racist, Homophobic Tweets
The purported tweets included the repeated use of the N-word and disparaging remarks about women and gays.

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Josh Hader apologized late Tuesday for being "immature and stupid" after admitting to racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments on Twitter years ago — tweets that resurfaced just as he was playing in his first MLB All-Star Game.

After Tuesday night's game at Nationals Park in Washington, Hader, 24, returned to the National League clubhouse to find his cellphone "blowing up" about the tweets, which he said were written when he was 17. He made his professional debut with the Brewers last year after first being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2012.

"I was in high school," said Hader, who grew up in Maryland. "We're still learning who we are in high school. You live and you learn. This mistake won't happen again."

"I'm deeply sorry for what I said ... it doesn't reflect any of my beliefs now," he added.

Screenshots of some of the tweets from 2011 and 2012 were shared on social media before Hader later deleted his Twitter account, which was verified.

Hader didn't specify what he might have written, but the tweets that were captured included the repeated use of the N-word, disparaging remarks about women and gays, and the words "KKK" and "white power."

As the tweets appeared to go viral during the All-Star Game, Hader's friends and family at the ballpark were given blank jerseys and gear to swap with, according to reports.

Hader, a rising star in the league known for his powerful left-handed fastball, told reporters Tuesday that he just never deleted the old tweets, but that some of them may have been rap lyrics.

"I really don't know exactly what's all out there," he said.

Hader added that he wanted to talk with his teammates and was willing to face possible discipline from the MLB.

The league said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that it would require Hader to undergo "sensitivity training" and participate in its diversity and inclusion initiatives.

"Hader took the necessary step of expressing remorse for his highly offensive and hurtful language, which fails to represent the values of our game and our expectations for all those who are a part of it," the statement said.
Brewers General Manager David Stearns also said Hader's past comments are "inexcusable," no matter how old they are.

Stearns did not say in his statement if Hader would be disciplined by the team, but that "we will continue to work through this issue with Josh as we prepare to resume games after the break."

The league has ordered sensitivity training before.

Earlier this year, Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel completed such a program after he made a racist gesture toward Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish during last year's World Series. He was also suspended for five games.

In 2006, Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen underwent sensitivity training and paid an undisclosed fine after hurling insults, including a derogatory term for gays, at a Chicago Sun-Times columnist.

Hader said he's "ready for any consequences for what happened seven years ago."

Some of his teammates, meanwhile, say they're willing to move past any controversy.

Lorenzo Cain, the Brewers center fielder, who is black, told reporters that the teammate he knows is a "great guy." He added that he didn't know exactly what Hader had previously tweeted.

"He was young, we all say some crazy stuff when we were young. That's one reason I don't have social media," Cain said, adding, "You always get in trouble for things you said when you were younger."

Y’all here is another Permit Patty trying to kick me off my own property because she’s having a hard time getting her kids to take a nap at 3:30 in the afternoon on a Saturday. I’m outside enjoying the afternoon with my daughter when this women came downstairs and asked me if I would move so her kids can nap. Mind you it’s mid day and we weren’t even being loud at all drawing with chalk. She followed me around and harassed me trying to get my information and apartment number as if she had a right to know. When I wouldn’t tell her she proceeded to ask me if I lived in the “affordable apartments” of the building for Cambridge residents or if I lived in one of the Harvard owned apartments (which is all the same building anyways). It was totally discriminating and racist of her.. or maybe it was because my daughter is biracial who knows. I have no idea who this woman is and the fact that she thinks she has some kind of authority over me is crazy! She wanted to know what apartment number I lived at so she can yell outside my window to see if I like it (real mature) as you hear her say in the video. This woman’s house is no bigger than mine even if she lives in one of the apartments that are owned by Harvard. Despite color, where I live, how much money I have she will be buried 6 feet under just like me... Why do people think they are literally better than others? Why does she think she has a right to make us move? If she really did not want to be disturbed she would own a one family house instead of deciding on moving in to a condominium with a bunch of neighbors. I’ve lived in this complex for 15 years. Not one other person complained about my daughter and I. I have no idea who this woman is but if someone knows her please tag her and share this if you agree!!!!

I just so happen to need some things from HD. Oh well, off to Lowes

Home Depot employee says he was fired after responding to customer's racist rant

ALBANY - Is the customer always right? The Times Union reported Thursday morning that a Home Depot employee at the Central Avenue store in Albany was fired after what he considers pretty nasty verbal abuse from a customer.

The employee in this case was a 60-year-old black man, who says the abuse was racist and unlike anything he'd ever experienced. He's still shocked he was fired over it.

When Maurice Rucker was working at the Albany Home Depot last Thursday, a customer approached the checkout with an unleashed dog - so Maurice tried to be a good employee.

"I said to him, "Sir, when you have your dog in here we prefer that you keep it on a leash.'" He turned around and said, 'F**k you. You're an a*****e you're a piece of s**t,'" explained Rucker.

Rucker was understandably shocked. However, it was just the start of a barrage of insults -- some of them racist.

He says, 'If Trump wasn't president, you wouldn't even have a job.' He said, 'You're from the ghetto, what do you know?'"
