Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Don't know if some of y'all hate or just dumb, this show was real big. If it keeps on this pace and gets bigger, you get more and more advertisement and sponsors. Like he said on the podcast, Nike and Spotify. Those are two big *** names. Complex was getting real money and would only be getting more. If I had to guess, I would say Joe should have gotten around 700K-1.3M a year. It was his show so I'm surprised he wasn't getting more and I'm surprised the contract didn't say some **** like it's his show and if he leaves, he takes the show with him.

I saw him and CTG gotta show on Revolt coming out called The Rap Up 2017. Go back and talk about everything from 2017. Assuming it's just one episode.

Joe has also been hinting at for months about all these companies he's met with. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a similar show on Revolt or Vice BUT Noreaga said Revolt didn't pay well so I don't know.

If someone is in re-negotiation with their employer for a NEW contract and asks for a particular amount...that person and their legal team would have TANGIBLE evidence to point to and justify why they should be paid that amount. I'd like to think that Joe walked into that meeting and was aware of his worth and had the charts and graphs to visualize his worth and why he should be paid a particular amount.

If that happened and that's information that hasn't been shared with us....that's one thing. He didn't quite answer that on his podcast. But the idea of "ES got alot of views...Joe should get millions" doesn't quite make much sense without the pertinent information...and right now "alot of views" isn't it for us on the outside looking in.

True.

It's plausible to believe that more revenue could have been made through direct ads before/during/after the show by Complex to get some money direct from advertisers. There's a number of ways Complex could have taken this shows popularity and monetized it all but it comes down to whether they think Joe is necessary to keep it working.

Bingo.

We need to hear from Complex.

Complex will continue to suffer until it thoroughly addresses Budden’s departure. It can either come to a new compensation agreement with Budden, or announce concrete plans to move forward.

Everyday Struggle’s brand was built on honesty and integrity. Its audience will accept nothing less than a full on-air accounting of what led to Budden’s exit. If Complex refuses to hold an open and transparent conversation with its viewers and find a worthy replacement for Budden—don’t expect for the show to be around at the end of 2018.

Complex has tried numerous times for relevancy in the EDS space. They had Combat Jack for a minute, which they whitewashed and made terrible. They had Desus & Mero.

I think Complex was just done with Joe. If you're under contract and your company gets a sponsorship, that doesn't mean you automatically get a cut of whatever they pay your company. You can absolutely use that to negotiate in the future but if you sabotage the deal because you want 20% of whatever Spotify paid Complex - the top isn't gonna be happy. That's really not gonna fly anywhere.

He coulda used all the sponsors as leverage when it came time for negotiations. You better believe Complex would be singing a different tune if they had 8 sponsors ready to back out if Joe was gone. Instead they came to him with a take it or leave it offer he turned down 3 months ago. Easy way to make it look like Joe asked for too much money and not that they wanted him gone.

Comparing YouTube channels don't provide anything because we all know the money is different woth how folks interact with ads and what moves they make outside of youtube Fact is complex was making sponsor deals off of ES that warranted a check larger than 200k. One of those deals was a nike deal

I have a pretty good understanding of how it works bro. Lil Bishop ('Zias and BLou Reactions') is literally fam. I know that different channels get different ads and get different reactions. I know that not every video is served ads either.

Without any real analytics its hard to ballpark anything or say who could afford to give who what. How many people that watch EDS have adblockers for instance?

Also, why are we still stuck on this 200k number from a non credible website?:smh:

This is what I don't get. They've been trying to get into this area for like a decade, now they're half steppin'?

I mean, I don't think anyone should be surprised though...like you said Complex had Desus vs Mero and The Combat Jack Show back when podcasting was just bubbling and no one was really creating a visual to go along with it. They dropped the ball. My first instinct was to say Joe was self-sabotaging again, but it seems like Complex just didn't want to go all in with television, which is probably a huge mistake.
