100 to Watch for 2009
2007 Class: Who's not in?
The new Rivals100
The new Rivals250

While much of the recruiting world focuses on the class of 2008, there has been an early emphasis from college coaches on the class of 2009.

There are a few factors which are causing programs to looking toward the future. Many of this year's classes are beginning to fill up, and the first day schools can send official written offers to 2009 prospects is Sept. 1.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp
Will Matt Barkley be the next big-time California QB to head to USC?
With that in mind, Rivals.com has come up with a list of 100 players to watch for 2009. The group is led by another top California quarterback, Matt Barkley.

Barkley is one of many juniors with early verbal offers. The 6-foot-2, 217-pounder from Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei is considered a heavy USC lean. Barkley is expected to follow in the footsteps of Mark Sanchez, Aaron Corp and other big-time QBs who have decided to play for the Trojans. In addition to his USC offer, Barkley has been offered by UCLA, Tennessee, Stanford, Cal, Florida State and many others.

The quarterback position looks absolutely loaded for 2009. Carmel, Ind., quarterback Morgan Newton, Philadelphia (Pa.) Cardinal O'Hara rifleman Tom Savage, Tampa (Fla.) Plant signal-caller Aaron Murray and Houston Cypress Ridge dual-threat Russell Shepard are just a few names you'll be hearing about in the future. More than 20 quarterbacks for 2009 have early verbal offers.

Other top offensive players to watch for in 2009 include Wichita (Kan.) East running back Bryce Brown, Durham (N.C.) Hillside running back Desmond Scott, Chesapeake (Va.) Great Bridge wide receiver Logan Heastie, Omaha (Neb.) Millard South wideout Vondrae Tostenson, Carson, Calif., tight end Morrell Presley and Salt Lake City Cottonwood Senior offensive lineman John Martinez.

On defense, end Devon Kennard of Desert Vista high in Phoenix is reminding people of Everson Griffen. Compton (Calif.) Dominguez standout Marquis Simmons and Sefner (Fla.) Armwood hitter Petey Smith lead a strong group of linebackers.

The defensive tackle position could be the deepest in the class of 2009. Biloxi, Miss., star D.J. Fluker, Greenville (Fla.) Madison tackle Jacobbi McDaniel, Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech monster William Campbell and Youngstown (Ohio) Cardinal Mooney standout John Simon lead a very strong class. They are flanked by Kennard, Columbia (S.C.) Richland Northeast's Chris Bonds and Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro end Corey Adams.

Joining Simmons and Smith as linebacker notables are Douglas (Ga.) Coffee standout C.J. Mizell, Chicago (Ill.) Hubbard's Darius Moffett and Stevenson (Ala.) North Jackson's Tana Patrick.

Gadsden (Ala.) City cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and Valencia, Calif., speedster Marlon Pollard join Tallahassee (Fla.) Rickards safety JaJuan Harley in the defensive backfield.

The athlete category can't be forgotten. That group is led by Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway's Dorian Bell, Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure's Patrick Hall and Cartersville, Ga., standout Donovan Tate.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Adams, CoreyAdams already has drawn national recruiting attention. The 6-foot-4, 272-pound strongside defensive end has early offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Michigan, Oregon State. After a sophomore season that saw him rack up 52 tackles, five sacks and one fumble recovery, there are huge expectations for him in the 2007 season. He was one of the best players at the Los Angeles NIKE Training Camp earlier this spring. College scouts love his ability to get after the football, but with his size he could eventually spin down to a defensive tackle on the next level. I know I need to get faster to be where I want to be as one of the best in the nation, Adams said. But Im pleased with where Im at now. I just have to keep working hard. Definitely expect Adams to be one of the Wests best prospects in the class of 2009.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Brown, BryceTheres already been plenty of national buzz about Brown and for good reason. The 6-foot, 212-pound running back from Wichita (Kan.) East is the younger brother of five-star linebacker Arthur Brown, but there are quite a few people that believe Bryce is the better of the two. Theres even early talk that Brown might be the nations top player in the class of 2009. He was named the EA Sports national sophomore of the year in 2006 after rushing for more than 2,000 yards. He had more than 1,600 yards as a freshman. "I feel like he will be the No. 1 player in the country next year, Browns trainer Brian Butler said. My personal belief is that Bryce and Arthur are the top two players in the country right now." If things remain on track, Brown could be the most heavily recruited player ever in the state of Kansas.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Ford, MichaelTheres always no shortage of talent in Louisiana, and the 2009 class looks like one of the deepest in recent memory. One of the biggest headliners in the state will be Leesville, La., running back Michael Ford. The 5-foot-10, 198-pound rusher racked up 1,334 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns in his sophomore season. He also dazzled on-lookers this spring at the NIKE Combine held in Baton Rouge. He was timed at 4.56 in the 40 and managed 28 reps at 185 pounds on the bench press, in addition to a 38-inch vertical jump. On the track, he also displayed his speed by routinely running a 10.5 100-meters. He captured his Class 4A regional meet title, but suffered a hip flexor injury that kept him from excelling at the state track meet in May.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Heastie, LoganIt looks like a banner year also in Virginia and without question one of the states top 2009 targets is Chesapeake (Va.) Great Bridge receiver Logan Heastie. The 6-foot-2, 181-pound receiver already has scholarship offers on his resume with more surely to start flowing in. Hes impressed everywhere hes gone this summer, including Floridas Fright Night Lights Camp. As a sophomore it was clear Heastie had a world of talent, but he felt he could showcase his abilities and develop in a more pass-oriented offense. That's why he transferred from Salem High School to Great Bridge. With a 40-yard dash time of 4.3 seconds and good hands, that should mean his receptions, yards and touchdowns will skyrocket in 2007.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp McCarron, AJMobile (Ala.) St. Pauls quarterback AJ McCarron is on track to be one of the nations premiere quarterbacks in the 2009 class. A tall quarterback at 6-foot-4 and a good frame at 180 pounds, McCarron looks to have all the tools the college coaches covet from a signal-caller. McCarron threw for 1,974 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2006 and had only four interceptions "I don't get real rattled in a game," he said. "My park (youth) league coaches always helped me stay calm. My coach is always preaching to stay through adversity. I never get rattled in a game and when we make big plays, I want the ball in my hands." MCcarron credits St. Paul offensive coordinator Tyler Siskey with helping his development. "He teaches me to read Cover-2 and Cover-4 and stuff like that, where the holes are, McCarron said. His play calling also helps. He knows I like to throw the deep out and the slant and knows I like to throw the deep ball a lot."

While some are pointing toward guys like Russell Sheppard as the No. 1 player in the state, there is also plenty of excitement about Dexter Pratt from Navasota. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound athlete could very well play at tailback on offense or either safety or linebacker on defense. As a sophomore, Pratt rushed for 839 yards on 138 carries, and he said his size and power are his biggest attributes. "I wouldn't say I'm a shifty guy, he said. I'm more of a power runner. He did show incredible athleticism this summer at the Texas 7-on-7 Tournament where he covered shifty fast receivers while lining up at defensive back. "I just run with them and don't let them beat me," he said. I just let my natural athletic ability take over when Im in coverage.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Stokes, JeJe'Ron Stokes of Philadelphia (Pa.) Northeast has impressed everywhere hes been in his career. This includes at his old high school Penn Charter and at the Rutgers 7-on-7 Camp and then at Floridas Friday Night Lights Camp this summer. Stokes, who played both wide receiver and free safety during his sophomore season, has tremendous speed, good hands and can get open deep. He was very polished during the one-on-one drills at Floridas camp, and it will be no surprise to see him emerge as one of the better wide receiver prospects in next year's class. "Everywhere I go, I want to show people there are more than two or three star players in Philly every year, he said. I want them to know that Im representing all of Philly and we have some great football talent up here. And leading the way likely will be Stokes.

Servite this spring and everybody was wondering who this good looking player in the class of 2009 was. Upon further review of his game tape and his measurable 6-foot and 176 pounds it was clear that Wood was one of the Golden States top 2009 prospects. As a sophomore, Wood racked up 1,407 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also had 595 yards receiving and seven scores, making him one of the top all-purpose threats in the Southland. He also had a strong showing at the Los Angeles NIKE Camp and schools have already started to extend scholarship offers.

I have heard that many have Fitzgerald and Christian Wilson already in our class. Brandon Smith is close as well.

Yeah, I don't think that it was Fred Jacksons kid. It wasn't mentioned anywhere so I would think we were talking about different kids. But that kid from 2009 is real good.

Very good feelings already about the 2 Florids boys from Eagle Lake: Marvin Robinson Jr and Aaron Williams. MRob is a safety from the class of 2010 and is already 6-2 180lbs. Big time hitter and smart. Williams is a 5-9 210lbs RB for 2009. He is a workout warrior. He did 29 reps of 185 last year. Runs a lgit 4.4. Said if he would have been offered a verbal offer at the Michigan camp, he would have committed. How he isn't on the 2009 early rankings is beyond me. Both coming up with their families for the Penn State game on the 22nd. Hopefully all goes well.

Rivals250 linebacker J.B. Fitzgerald has already narrowed his list to five schools. The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder out of Princeton Junction (N.J.) West Windsor Plainsboro South is now in the process of setting official visits.

Fitzgerald isn't sure he'll make it to Iowa on an official.
"My five schools are Florida, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Michigan and Rutgers," he said. "I already have a visit set for Michigan on September 21st. I'm also in the process of trying to schedule an official to Rutgers and then I'll probably take ones to Georgia Tech and Florida. I've got to see how it plays out. I'm not sure how many visits I'll actually end up taking, but they should be set up soon."

The only school not mentioned for an official on the list is Iowa.

"I would like to, but I've looked at my schedule and there's and it doesn't look like it's going to happen," he said. "I always have a game when they have a home game."

Does that fact hurt Iowa?

"I don't think so. I definitely know what they are about and they are under high consideration. We'll see how it goes."

At this time, Fitzgerald claims three schools on his list are leading.

"I like all of the schools, but probably Florida, Michigan and Rutgers are the frontrunners. They are the top three out of the five," he said. "I'm feeling closer with those programs at the current time and I'm real confident with the coaches. I could definitely see myself going to one of those schools. As for Georgia Tech and Iowa, they are great places but don't stand out quite as much as the other three."

Certainly it appears the four-star prospect is closing in on a decision. Is that the case?

"I'm really taking my time and whenever I feel I'm 100% set on one school that's when the decision will be," he said. "I don't want to give myself a time limit. I do think it'll be between now and the end of the season though."

Recruiting isn't the only thing on Fitzgerald's mind right now. Football is in full swing as practice has begun for his team.

"I'm getting ready for the season," he said. "We started practice last Monday and have been going strong. Our first scrimmage is coming up on Saturday and it'll be a true test to see how everything is clicking. We're a senior heavy team and it is full speed ahead.

"I'm starting to feel an improvement too. I'm more fluid in the linebacker spot, particularly since I only have seven games at the position under my belt. I'm more comfortable with each practice. I do still need to improve and want to work on my total game, reads, pass coverage, speed and strength, so I can be as ready as possible for college."

Fitzgerald opens the season on September 8th against Trenton Central.

eh, not really. Hale is going to end up as a DE and Christian Wilson is most likely going to play H-Back.

If we could get our hands on Jon Major, Fitzgerald, Meyers or Demens to go along with Spoon... That would be sick. We'll end up with at least two of these guys I think.

Brandon Smith sounds like a safety, but might have the ability to move to LB like Mouton. Plus someone like Adams/Staley

Then Robby Green or Marc Anthony at corner.

Plus Middleton/Hale as DE.

Leaving a scholarship open for longshots Baldwin, Saddler (these two not so much as the other guys...) Floyd, Walker, Carraway, Fuller, O-line, someone else... there are still a ton of quality recruits listing us and I'm hoping that Lloyd will close strong like he usually does and get 1 or 2 big namers.

I think Michigan will look to sign 2 more on offense and the next 5-7 for D. 1 lineman and 1 WR. I think we go Baldwin or bust at WR and Trevor Robinson or Preston Bailey for the lineman. I would be very happy with our offensive class for 2008.

Defense has some major holes we need to fill. DT is done with Mike Martin and William Campbell coming in the next year. DE is a major need, I think we get Jamar Jarrett from Cali and thats all. Maybe Nick Perry but I think he will be a LB. I think Hale could play MIKE in college. He is already physically ready to play and think added weight would really hurt him. He would not be near as explosive and lag alot. I really hope he comes to Michigan but I think he and Cam end up at WVU. I think Jon Major is insanely overrated mainly because they love his size and I have heard he is 6-1 215lbs and not the 6-4 230 they bill him at. Meyers is more than likely a UF guy. I don't like him either. We also need 3 more in the secondary to go with 2/3 more LBs and a DLineman

I believe we already have Smith and Fitzgerald in the bag. That bring the class to 16. Add in Marc Anthony (CB) for 17, Vaughn Telemaque or a sleeper at S and it gives us 18. 19 and 20 could be Jarrett and Perry. Then another OLineman puts us at 21. Baldwin would give us 22, if we don't get him look for the staff to push hard for Vaughn Carraway. I think we top out at 22 now that Butler is back on the team. That also makes it look like Kevin Koger could be switching to DE. I hope they give him a shot at TE though. The kid is ready to play NOW.

Talk about it in The Fort
Michigan captains play things close to the vest - those who don't learn quickly. But senior running back Mike Hart and fifth-year senior linebacker Shawn Crable were able to share some interesting tidbits from U-M's fall camp at their Tuesday press conference for captains

Crable, for one, hinted that while the defense is improving, there's still a long way to go.

"We've still got a lot of problems," he said, failing to elaborate for fear of angering the coaches "[But] spring was really for the young guys, and coming into two-a-days the defense has really stepped it up. The coaches have really stepped it up, from a learning tempo to enforcing that we've got to understand things on defense.

Wolverine Photo
"I think we do a lot of things well on defense. We'll be a fast defense, just as good [potentially] as last year. But it comes down to the defense buying in and doing it on a consistent basis, because last year we were consistent until the end. This year we need to become consistent, then finish. We have a lot of flashes of greatness. We have a lot of people who compete a lot and love to compete but I don't think they understand fully the mental part compared to just competing and running around."

But that's what you get when you have freshmen, redshirt freshmen and sophomores competing for significant playing time, said Crable guys still learning the playbook and being taught those things instead of being preached to run to the ball or play with more intensity.

He cited backup SAM linebacker Marell Evans, a true frosh, as an example of a player with potential who isn't ready for prime time and probably won't be for a while.

"I think he's good and he's a competitor. He has all the potential to be a player and a starter next year, but I think he's just a little wild with the way he does things," said Crable. "He's trying hard to do things, but he's not in control of it. There are a lot of thoughts rolling through his head, so as the season goes on and he gets more reps, things will start to slow down for him. He won't feel like he's in a rush to do anything."

Switching gears, Crable evaluated the Michigan offense and the defense's performance head-to-head against what should be one of the nation's top units. Stopping the run and limiting big plays will be key for this year's defense (as it always is), Lloyd Carr said earlier in the day. Crable believes the defense has done well in one area, not as well in the second.

The defensive line holds its own against the talented offensive line, he said, but balls have been flying over heads at times.

"To an extent [we've limited big plays], but we have an offense that has the ability to make big plays all the time," he explained. "It comes down to us, after they make a big play, buckling back down and realizing the game's not over and the competition period is not over. We kind of settle back down and get back into a groove of competing again.

"We don't really talk about big plays. We figure if we run to the ball and do the things we're supposed to do, we'll eliminate them altogether. We do run to the ball a lot."

That includes the inside linebackers, a position in which the competition has been fierce. Carr said veteran John Thompson and redshirt freshman Obi Ezeh should both play, through Crable noted they're working on different things.

"It's competitive," he said. "You see Obi getting better every day. You also see JT competing to stay as good as he is, working on little things. Obi has to work on a lot of things, and he has to take days where he has to get better in certain areas every day, compared to JT who knows the package, knows the things; he just has to fine tune little things.

"The competition is good, but they both have a lot of intensity. They both want to hit, they both want to get to the ball and they both want to play."

Finally, asked about some of the younger players who have impressed him in camp, Crable cited a freshman cornerback first.

"We had Troy Woolfolk who made a play the other day he got beat on a pass for long yardage in the two-minute drill. Two plays later he makes a play and intercepts it and gets us off the field," Crable recalled. "I think him learning like that, it shows how our defense is progressing. We're not worried about the last play. As a freshman he could have gotten down on himself, but he learned.

"[Defensive linemen] Jason Kates and Marques Slocum, every day they are trying to get better. Kates is trying to work on his stamina and being able to play every day. Slocum is trying to work on playing lower, going to the ball, because it's all new to him. When they come along, I think we'll be a lot better defense."

Wolverine Photo
Hart, meanwhile, was his usual, loquacious self away from the podium. He insisted the defense would hold up just fine this year, acknowledged he was still getting plenty of rest to give the young backs a chance to learn and noted he was honored to be a captain, but confident he might be.

"It's something I felt. A lot of guys respect me, look up to me, they know I work hard," he said. "I try to do all the right things. It's something I expected, but I also prepared myself for the worst. But it's something I wanted."

Though senior quarterback Chad Henne wasn't voted captain, Hart insisted there were no hard feelings, noting Henne wasn't expecting the honor but was just as much a leader as him or Long.

"This is his offense," Hart said. "I didn't have to say anything to him."

While Hart has done plenty of sitting this fall, he's seen many of the young backs behind him improve.

"Brandon [Minor] has gotten a lot better. He's a great pass protector now," said Hart. "There's no question he can come in on third down and pass protect." On freshman Avery Horn, he added, "He's fast. He's realfast. And he's tough. Once he learns the offense he doesn't know anything, he doesn't know what he's doing at all. He's lost. He missed the first week of camp. But I think once he gets more experience he's going to be a great player here.

"We didn't really expect that [kind of speed]. Everyone said he was fast from watching high school film, but a lot of guys think they are fast in high school but get here and they're slow. But one time he just took off and you could tell he has a different speed. It's a different [acceleration] he'll make a first step and he's gone."

As for the fullbacks a work in progress, said Hart.

"It's good competition," he said. "I think they definitely need to get better. They know that. But they're all young. We have three freshmen at fullback. Once they learn what they doing they're all tough, they just have to learn the offense. But they've been getting better every day. They've improved a lot from the first day of camp, I'll tell you that."

Heres from Lloyd's press conference if you havent heard it.
Quote:
On winding camp down: "We're beginning our last week of training camp. We've got Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Our last two-a-day will be tomorrow.

"We still have some decisions to make, and that will probably play out through the weekend. Then we'll make some decisions and get into game week."

On the position battles at right tackle: "At right tackle, Steve Schilling has had an excellent fall. He's an extremely talented guy, with great size and athletic ability. He's a guy that is smart and that loves to play. He will be a great player here someday.

"Mark Ortmann has done a very good job and has competed well. Perry Dorrestein it's just too close to call at this point."

On the kicking game: "Bryan Wright looks to be our kickoff guy. He has done a very good job there. The placekicking has been very competitive. They have all done a good job. I think we have three guys [Wright, Jason Gingell and K.C. Lopata] who are very close, so that will necessitate a call here. We'll have confidence in whoever we choose."

On injuries: "We've got some typical training camp injuries sprained ankles and things of that nature. Alex Mitchell had an injury Monday in practice. We'll have to see. He will miss the first game, possibly the second. We hope to have him back it's not an injury that is going to impact his season, but he does have some rehab to do to an injury.

"Carlos [Brown] is still in a cast. He has not practiced since his injury. He has also had three teeth removed, two wisdom teeth, so he's not had a very fun training camp. But I think the worst is over for him and hopefully he'll be able to return to practice next week. We'll just have to see."

Wolverine Photo

Tight end Carson Butler is back practicing.
On Carson Butler: "He has returned to practice. What he's trying to do is do some things he's been asked to do. So we'll see how that works out, but he is practicing."

On the tight end position: "Mike Massey has had an excellent fall. He's a guy who has really matured physically. He runs extremely well, he's got good hands, and he has won the starting tight end position.

"Andre Criswell had a very good fall. A week ago, he turned his ankle and missed a few days. He's back in practice, but he's done a very good job there.

"Martell Webb and Steve Watson, two freshmen, are trying to learn the system, but both of them have competed very well and made some progress. We'll have to see how that situation develops."

On who is playing right guard: "[Jeremy] Ciulla missed a week in there. He returned to practice on Monday. It's very competitive.

"Dave Molk, a true freshman, worked at center the first week or so. He's working at guard now. He's a very, very talented guy. It's pretty unusual for a freshman to come in and really be able to pick up all the things that they need to do. But he's a bright guy, a strong, powerful guy, very athletic. He's made an impression.

"But Ciulla certainly is there. Tim McAvoy has had a very good fall. We'll have to see how that goes."

On the fullback situation: "The fullback competition is very intense. Mark Moundros has had a very good fall. Vince Helmuth is competing well. I think that will go right down to the wire, as far as the fullback position."

On the decision-making process in allowing Butler back on the team: "There was an allegation. The judicial process played out, and he was found not guilty of a serious allegation. Because of that, I just felt it would be extremely unfair not to give him another opportunity."

On Jonas Mouton's effort's at weakside linebacker: "Jonas has had a very good fall. He was hurt on Saturday, with an ankle sprain. He will hopefully return to practice later in the week or certainly by game week. It's just one of those things where he has to rehab it and get it ready to go. He's had a very, very good fall."

On the middle linebacker competition: "At the Mike linebacker position, John Thompson and Obi Ezeh those two guys are really in a spirited competition. I think it's safe to say both of them are going to play a very important role.

"Ezeh is a young player who, in high school, played a lot of different positions. Last spring we played Obi at the Sam (strongside) linebacker position, which I think gives us flexibility at that position. He's an outstanding athlete, and really a guy with great potential."

"John has really had an excellent fall. I think both of them are going to see significant playing time. We'll just have to let that position play itself out."

On weakside linebacker Chris Graham's camp efforts: "Chris has had an excellent fall. He's had a lot of experience. He's had a lot of successes in his career here. He's been slowed at times by some injuries, but he's a powerful guy.

"He's really improved as a pass defender. He's tough and he plays with a lot of enthusiasm. He's a guy who is really well respected on our team."

On whether key players are being held out of workouts: "In certain situations in practice. We've had some full scrimmages, and we've held a couple of guys out of that, simply because, first of all, if a guy has proven that he's an outstanding player, it makes sense today, with the scholarships where they are, that you try to get them to the season.

"That does not mean they have not practiced in a lot of intense drills, because they have. But we have held a couple guys out of the full scrimmages."

On the top corners aside from Morgan Trent: "Johnny Sears has had an outstanding fall. He's a guy who when we recruited him he really played a significant role a year ago on special teams. He made some great plays on the kickoff. He's a guy that plays without any fear. He's a very tough, hard-nosed player, and I think he's really matured at the corner. He's had a very good fall.

"Brandon Harrison has had an excellent fall. He has in the last week or so really made some strides at the cornerback position. Of course, he was a starter a year ago in the nickelback situation. The experience he had a year ago has helped him. He's made some real strides.

"[Freshmen] Troy Woolfolk and Donovan Warren will play. They are young guys with very good ability. Donovan is a guy that is extremely aggressive, a good tackler, a guy that plays without fear. As at true freshman, the thing I look for is a guy that is not intimidated by the speed, all the things there are to learn. Sometimes that really delays a guy, because he is thinking too much. In my experience, the guys able to come in and play important roles as freshmen don't get down when they make a big mistake. They understand making a mistake is part of the learning process. Both of those kids have done an excellent job."

On Morgan Trent: "Morgan will be one of the starting corners. He's had a very good fall. [Secondary coach] Vance [Bedford] is very pleased with where he is. The big thing for Morgan is he's got all the ability; he's one of those kids that has looked at his career, he understands like every player does that it's about getting better, preparing yourself mentally for all the challenges. Of course the older you are, the better prepared you are to do that. He's done a good job."

On the free safety battle: "Steve Brown is really a physical player. He's still a young player, has a lot of things to learn. Charles Stewart has made the move in there. I like both those guys; I think they are both going to play. I think they are both guys that are going to make a real contribution in a lot of areas on this team. That position right now is probably up for grabs, so we'll see what happens there."

Marques Slocum is battling for playing time.
On punt returners: "Johnny Sears has done an excellent job returning punts. We practiced yesterday morning in the stadium in a torrential rain. It was a very valuable practice from the standpoint of learning how you have to play different when the ball is wet. That's particularly true in the return game, as a receiver, as a quarterback and center I think we learned some things yesterday.

"Johnny, with three or four days to go here, has done an excellent job. Greg Mathews is really a reliable guy in terms of handling the football, and that's what a return guy has to prove. He's got to prove that he's reliable and making good decisions as to whether or not he's going to fair catch it, whether he's going to field the ball inside the 10-yard line all those kicks that are short where you've got to come up and fair catch. There are a lot of decisions to make.

"Donovan Warren has caught the ball extremely well. James Rogers, at some point, will develop into an outstanding punt returner. We'll determine that later in the week."

On the kick return game: "[Sophomore running back] Brandon Minor is a guy that we've got to decide how we use him in the kickoff return with Carlos out right now. That really becomes an issue from a depth standpoint at tailback. [Freshman] Avery Horn has got some looks there and is a pretty explosive guy. He missed a week or so of training camp because of some clearinghouse issues, which I think really set him back some. We are not decided there where we're going to be."

On defensive tackle Marques Slocum: "All of our backup guys in the defensive line are freshmen or guys playing their first year or redshirt freshmen or sophomores. Jason Kates has shown real improvement. He's got his weight down and is improving very day. John Ferrara, Greg Banks, all those kids and Slocum has got an opportunity to play for the first time. He's got a lot of work to do, but he has wonderful athletic ability. He's made some strides from when we started. He certainly will get an opportunity to get some playing time."

On any surprises he's experienced: "When I look at what we've done through yesterday you have to take it to the game, but I think defensively we've made a lot of strides from where we were when we started spring practice. I think we're a better team today. We're going to have a team that plays with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. We've got a lot of young guys there. The question will be how we stop the run and prevent big plays. That's the test of every defense. Certainaly with as many new players as we have and as many different types of schemes, young players are presented with a different type of scheme almost every week. How they adjust to that and how they grow is a big question.

"In the kicking game we've got some unknowns. The return game, we just have to see how some of these kids that are given an opportunity to play for the first time respond to the competition."

On sophomore defensive end Brandon Graham's progress: "Brandon missed last week with a sprained ankle. But he was having an outstanding spring. He's back practicing, not full speed, but hopefully by Monday he'll be ready to go."

On being a captain at Michigan: "Being selected captain by your teammates is the greatest honor a Michigan football player can receive. I think our team really made three great choices here. These guys have all proven themselves as outstanding football players; they've always represented our program, team and the university extremely well. They are all very passionate and are very much team guys. They just want to win. That's really, I think, it says a lot about our team. They want to win, and that's what they based their decision on."

Holland no longer with USC footballOft-injured former Taft standout either left team or was dismissedBY SCOTT WOLF, Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 08/20/2007 10:38:01 PM PDT

Two years ago, Jamere Holland entered his senior year at Taft High in Woodland Hills as an explosive wide receiver with the nation's top returning time in the 100 meters.

Today, he's hoping to transfer from USC to Oregon and might not run track again.," said cornerback Shareece Wright, one of Holland's closest friends on the team. "He wants to go to a team where he can be the man. Jamere just wasn't happy and satisfied and wasn't all there."

Sources said Holland met with Carroll two weeks ago to express concern over freshmen receivers Ronald Johnson and Brandon Carswell getting a bigger role in practices. Carroll frequently lets freshmen take more snaps at the outset of training camp because he wants to see how much they might contribute. The move also bothered tailback Emmanuel Moody, who transferred last week.

Holland did not think the meeting with Carroll went well and stopped
attending meetings with trainers and doctors, sources said. Holland told his friends he wanted to leave USC.

"He wasn't buying into the program," Wright said.

Carroll was reluctant to offer details over the "dismissal."

"He's been down in the dumps for some time about being injured," Carroll said. "He hasn't taken care of himself. It was just the thing to do. I'm not sure what he's going to do."

Holland wants to go to Oregon,."

When Holland started football practice, his sore groin remained an issue and required several cortisone injections. He also suffered a concussion.

Holland could not be reached for comment Monday but Wright said he would no longer run track.

"He's done with that," Wright said. "He really wants to be a football player."

Holland ran the 100 meters in 10.36 seconds his junior year at Taft, the nation's top returning time. But in his only 100 last year, in the USC-UCLA dual meet, his time was 10.81 as he ran with a sore groin.

>WE NEVER SLEEP<
Lets go Bulls, UCLA,Dodgers and Cowboys!

TCU, FSU and Wisconsin are my sleepers.....i will be glued to the tube for this whole season.....Heisman..........PJ Hill
Free Gizmo aka Smash....Sorry your feelings were hurt Guys

Really, Wisconsin? A Top 10 team as a sleeper? Way to go out on a limb. I do agree that FSU will be back to a contender THIS year. Their D is gonna be special. I think Jimbo gets the O rolling with all the talent they have. Weatherford will just have to get the ball to his recievers and Antone. I know he has had trouble doing it the past couple of years but I think Jimbo will simplify it for Drew and he will put it together. I am gonna say they will battle VT for the ACC crown and will end the season in the Top 10.
MICHIGAN WOLVERINES

Man, Normally Im the one siding with FSU, I cant ride with them this yr. The QBs are horrendous. Its really sad to have that much talent on the field and have the QB as the worst player out of all your position players. Neither one of these two could start at any of yall favorite schools.
