RIP Joe Paterno

Joe knew what he knew, but still enabled Sandusky around campus.  On top of it all, Sandusky was still allowed by Paterno to coach for the entire 1999 season even after the meeting w. victim #4 earlier in the year.

Just let the man rest. All you do is complain like he is the only man at fault in that alleged situation.

"I wish I had done more" Yes he said that. But anytime you don't do something to the best of your ability in anything, you can look back and wish you did it differently. We still do not know what all happened and what the truth is about everything. So until then, just let it go cause you talking on here isn't doing any good for anybody and doesn't change the opinion on anyone

Let's not talk on a message board. That's the trick!

In his final days, that wide-eyed optimist and aw-shucks success story was gone. The Sandusky scandal had sapped what no opponent ever could. He sat earlier this month at his kitchen table with, not coincidentally, Sally Jenkins, the Washington Post columnist and Dan Jenkins’ daughter, for his last public words.

He’d lost his hair from chemotherapy. His breath was heavy. He sipped on a soda. “His voice sounded like wind blowing across a field of winter stalks, rattling the husks,

I'm sure this response is going to fall on mostly deaf ears, but $%$+ it, here goes:

Personally, I think it's disturbing for anyone to be passionate on either side of the coin.

If you feel so passionately against Joe that you wish him to be hung from the rafters and sent to the darkest depths of hell, I find that disturbing. Also, I have a question for you: have you ever been in a situation where someone very close to you was involved in child abuse? If you are so critical of Joe, then I would assume you uprooted trees and made planets collide in order to stop that abuse, right? If you have been in that situation, and you didn't continue your efforts until that situation was over… or if you've never been in that situation… in my opinion, you still have a right to criticize, no doubt, but your passion is dually disturbing, because you are absolutely and undeniably clueless about how difficult it is to handle that situation. You can assume how you would handle it, but you can't say you have handled it. (I have been in this situation, and the people were my own mother and her husband. I can tell you right now, that %$#$ is NOT easy. I can't even begin to explain to you the backlash suffered by whistleblowers.)

Then on the other side of the coin, if you feel so passionately in support of Joe that all the talk of his negligence hurts you to the core, I find that disturbing. And I have a couple questions for you: do you have a child? Or have you ever been through any sort of ongoing trauma/abuse that someone could have stopped, but nobody did, and the only reason it stopped was because your oppressor died or maybe moved away or something OTHER than 'Someone stepped in'? Because if you don't have a kid, or you've never been in a situation where you are hoping someone steps up and ceases your trauma/abuse, I still think you have a right to support Joe, no doubt, but I find your passionate support of him disturbing. If you have an allegiance or loyalty to Joe or PSU that is unshaken throughout this whole thing, I find that disturbing, and it is that exact sort of allegiance and loyalty that prevented Joe from doing 'whatever it takes' to stop the abuse.

Damn, reading through this thread you would think Joe Paterno was the one who molested those kids.

People hate him more than Sandusky.

def QFT; people act like it was Joe Pa who did the molesting...should he have done more?  absolutely he should have.  It's funny how ESPN is the one who ran him into the ground and now one of the top stories is "Joe Paterno's Legacy will outweigh the Scandal".
So many self righteous people in this world.

I just came across this...I had no clue
The Other Penn State Cover-Up: Death Threats Against Black Students
Hate mail to black students and a death, all swept away by PSU

As news unravels around the grand jury report revealing charges against former Penn State football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky for raping and sexually molesting underage boys, some former black Penn State students are now painfully reliving a scandal that occurred at their university ten years ago. In 2000, the year a janitor witnessed a boy younger than 13 (“Victim 8

using a Kanye gif and using words like "smashed" for child abuse tell me a lot about you already.
NTers have selective reading skills; I have said a MILLION times he didn't do enough but people are happy he is dead...c'mon

And the fact that your essentially defending Paterno tells me a lot about you.

No one is happy at the fact that he's dead, but he is/was a straight piece of @@+@

Paterno came from a time that you didn't talk about child molestation. Look at how long the Catholic church took to acknowledge its very own misdeeds. Paterno came from a time where you did not complain about it, as it could have a finger pointed back at you, the victim. It was the same mentality that allowed women and wives to be raped and abused, without their complaints being taken seriously, even by law enforcement. His response, or lack thereof, suggests an earlier time, in which men, White men in particular, were given the benefit of the doubt when such accusations were made.

With his death, all of that old school frat boy %%@% gets thrown out of the window. The reason they let Sandusky out the first time, was so that he could kill himself, fall on the sword so to speak, so that there would be no need for a trial. Now with Paterno's death, this guy is going to be held accountable not only for child abuse, but the death of Joe Paterno as well, at least in the eyes of public opinion.
I expect suicide to happen this time around, but that may not be good enough, probably too late for Paterno's sake.

What's ironic is that the people making disgusting comments in this thread are no better Joe Paterno.

I've lost faith in the Human Race

It's about the kids man. Plain and simple. It's just not mistake when it comes to kids.
To me JoePa didn't do @!$$. If you report it to your supervisor and time goes by and you don't see the clown locked up in a cell, you see this scum on your campus and facilities and you don't report it someone else who can do something? A man with that much power on campus can't report something as sick as this to someone who can lock this !%$!!%+!%%$% up? If he reports it to his supervisor and nothing happens then why couldn't he hold a press conference to air it to someone who can listen? I don't care if they were friends for 20+ years, hell, if someone in my immidiate family was doing this I would still report it so someone can lock them up. He let the sick clown roam his campus.

That's just not a mistake. That's cowardice.
