The Dallas Mavericks and Rick Carlisle reached a verbal agreement Friday night on a four-year coaching contract, ESPN.com has learned.
Although a news conference to introduce Carlisle as Avery Johnson's successor is now considered unlikely before Wednesday, according to sources close to the process, Carlisle and the Mavericks ended two days of slow-moving talks late Friday by coming to terms on a deal that is believed to worth at least $4 million annually.
Carlisle arrived in Dallas on Thursday with his family with the expectation of a Friday news conference. He was joined in Big D by the two former NBA head coaches -- Dwane Casey and Terry Stotts -- who will be assistants on Carlisle's first staff with the Mavericks.
It appeared the sides would go into the weekend with no deal when an accord was reached shortly before 11 ET.

Do you feel you fully transitioned into being a Net?
Yeah I feel comfortable here. Being here, being with coach, real cool, teammates are cool. I feel pretty good being here.
What are your plans for this summer?
I'm going back to Dallas for maybe a month; I have my house, I have to check on my house. Then come back here to Cherry Hill, start working out in maybe three weeks to a month and and try to get back in playing shape and get ready for next year.
Where do you think you will be next year?
I mean: I'm a free agent; I'm going to see my options, see what I have out there. Maybe come back here or go back to Dallas. I'm just going to do what is best for me and my family.
Would being a Net be best for you?
I love it here. I love the guys, I love the team. I think we could have made the playoffs but we were in a tough position with a trade in the middle of the year and having to make a run. We didn't really gel together like that but I could see myself coming back here next year.
How do you feel you did with the Nets?
I did alright. I played good defense…I just have to keep working and I think if I come back here I will have a better role than I did coming here midseason.
What advice would you give your teammates?
You have to work hard in the summer, man. It's not fun: I've been in the playoffs the last four years, went to the Finals two years ago. There's not a better feeling than that. We just have to keep working to try to make it next year.
Can you take any positives from a season like this one?
"The good thing that you can look at not making the playoffs is that you have a longer vacation and you can work on your game harder and try to get better -- more than the people who went to the playoffs. Take a couple of weeks off - maybe two or three weeks - then start working out and trying to get better; that's a positive thing."
Since that summer where you completely changed your body - and lost like 40 pounds - have you worked that hard every summer?
"I felt like since that summer that I did not work that hard but that summer we didn't make the playoffs too. I had a lot of time. But this summer I'm going to dedicate myself and I'm going hard to the gym every day to try to get better."

Agent Says Baron May Opt Out May 10, 2008 - 12:28 pm The San Mateo County Times -
Todd Ramasar, the agent for point guard Baron Davis, failed to make any headway while meeting with the Warriors on Thursday and believes that his client could opt out of his contract and become a free agent, according to The San Mateo County Times.
"After sitting down with the Warriors organization (Thursday) regarding Baron's future, I don't know what direction the Warriors are going," Ramasar said. "Baron is adamant about remaining a Warrior but based on my conversations with the team (Thursday), we have to consider all of his options."
Another source close to Davis claimed that there is a '50-50' chance that the All-Star will become a free agent this summer and pursue other offers.
Davis will make $17.8 million next season if he elects not to opt out of the final year of the six-year pact he signed as a member of the New Orleans Hornets .
Reinsdorf Set To Meet With D'Antoni |
May 10, 2008 - 3:04 am |
Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf is set to meet with Suns coach Mike D'Antoni this weekend, showing that Chicago may be serious about making D'Antoni the team's next head coach, K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune is reporting. The Bulls and Knicks are going head to head to secure D'Antoni, who is still under contract as the head coach of the Phoenix Suns . While the Bulls do not want to get into a bidding war with New York over D'Antoni, the report by Johnson states that they could if they want to as the financial situation involving former coach Scott Skiles is not as grim as it is being depicted. According to two people familiar with Skiles' settlement after his Christmas Eve firing, Skiles is owed $1 million of his guaranteed $3.5 million next season. In exchange for waiving his offset, Skiles agreed to refund $1 million of the $4.5 million owed next season. Skiles, who receives his Bulls money despite signing a four-year, $18 million deal with the Bucks, then spread the remaining $3.5 million over seasonal payments of $1 million, $1 million, $750,000 and $750,000. Despite speculation stating otherwise, Chicago do not have a Sunday deadline for a potential contract proposal to D'Antoni. |
An NBA source close to the situation told The Boston Globe today that Phoenix Suns coach Mike D'Antoni has accepted the New York Knicks head coaching job.
Despite having two years and $8.5 million on his deal with the Suns, D'Antoni was given permission by the team to interview for openings with the Knicks and the Chicago Bulls.
D'Antoni has a career record of 267-172 after coaching Phoenix for four seasons and Denver in one.

For all the couple of Knick fans remaining. I think he's a good fit with us. We've got a couple of runners. But really, it's what Walsh decides to do with our current roster and with our pick
God, I hope not. If he's on the Knicks I am 100% confident that is all Dolan's idea and not Walsh's (over-riding his decisions alreadyas he always does).
Effin idiot.

Davis is slated to make $17.8 million next season, the final installment of a six-year, $84-million contract extension he signed as a member of the New Orleans Hornets. That deal gave him the maximum allowable salary under the league's collective bargaining agreement. Davis is willing to give the Warriors a discount and drop down from "max player" status to help Golden State add more talent, but there is a clear difference of opinion in his market value. Despite his impressive defensive statistics, Camby's value as trade bait has been hotly debated by Denver management for the past 12 months. While the Nuggets tried to pry one of the young stars from the Atlanta Hawks in return for Camby last spring, a 34-year-old center now would likely have more appeal to a contender looking for the final piece to its championship puzzle. Denver Post
As the Nuggets bet Iverson will not choose to opt out of a contract scheduled to pay him a salary in excess of $20 million next season, the team remains uncertain of what to do with the 32-year-old guard down the road, especially when Denver considers A.I. could be attractive to a potential trade partner looking for a marquee name to sell tickets in the short term and provide roster flexibility in the long term. Denver Post
While the Nuggets have given no indication they will actively shop Carmelo Anthony, the constant drama in the life of their 23-year-old forward has become the source of enough frustration within team headquarters that Denver would be willing to listen if somebody made a trade offer too good to refuse for Melo. The problem? In a league where stars such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James dominate, it's difficult to come out ahead when trading a singular immense talent for any combination of players and draft picks.
