I don't think he's arguing the whole vertical plane thing. I think if the bar is as close to the body as possible the bar can still move up in a straight path if your form is correct. I don't necessarily think you have to have the bar sliding up your shins from the very beginning but it should pull up your quads once you get past the knee and your hips should drive forward as fast as possible at that point.
