The reason why East/West is the way it is and many are reluctant to switch is because of timezones. North/South would just make the timezone problem larger.

Unconferenced playoff format. Keep the regular season the same. Some east teams with cupcake schedules will make it in and get bounced in the first round, and some will become cinderella teams. $$$
