Yea...the top half is good (probably through Missouri), but the bottom half is

My only concern with Oklahoma State is size. They're athletic as hell, but they're probably not gonna fare too well when they play against at leastdecent bigs (OU- Blake Griffin; Texas - Connor Atchley; Kansas - Cole Aldrich; Baylor - Kevin Rogers; A&M - Bryan Davis; Iowa State - Craig Brackins;Missouri - DeMarre Carroll). I'm not worried about them trying to defend the athletic bigs, but they should see some problems when they play someone withsome decent/good post moves...Ibrahima Thomas could be getting in foul trouble a lot this season.

Does Ford like to run a zone defense? That's the only way I see them being able to defend a team with good bigs right now until they get some depth downlow in there.

I'm salty I was outside playing football lol. My mom said they looked sloppy at first then they picked up the pace and put it away.

Their class for next year only consists of Robinson. I pray that they land Xavier Henry because they need a big time scorer on the wings. I damn near got a headache watchin' this Kansas squad tryin' to score.
This class they have now became so overrated.

Just cause you bring in 20 guys doesn't make it a top class. Quality > Quantity.

...
One thing with Travis Ford, they run. Doesn't matter who it is against, they force the issue. Majerus was the only coach recently I saw kinda be able toslow things down. Should be interesting to see if that remains in the Big 12. Teams like Texas and Baylor won't mind.

.....
On that note his old team pulls the upset at Midnight.

I feel you, but at the end of the day, if he was player in the 90's he would be wearing a Johnnies uniform. It just is another top talent that St. Johns failed to get.
Na even if Louie was still coaching he wouldn't have came here. He wanted to get out of NY and Virginia is just a much better situation for him academically and for everything else he was looking for.

That's the whole point though, St. Johns doesn't have @**% to offer anyone anymore. When the Garden was rocking and this team was competitive there was a reason for people to stay in NY. Not anymore. The fact that he had St. Johns in his top 3 with the state the program is in now, I am confident we would have landed him.
Gody ready to wreck havoc this year. I'm just waiting for the UCONN game when he gets to put Thabeet's word back into his mouth.
Fields' value to the reigning Big East Conference tournament champions was apparent from the opening tip; the Panthers are 52-12 in his career when he starts. They lost six of 14 when he wasn't in the lineup last season, when they were beaten by Michigan State in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
"He looks like he's back to me," Blair said.

Meantime, Fields told The New York Times that he considered playing for St. John's but wanted to go someplace with a winning tradition.

"It's been hard, pretty much, for guys to go there," Fields said. "I was close to going to St. John's, I really wanted to go to St. John's, but the situation they were in and the way the program was going. That's no shot at Norm Roberts. I think he's a great guy and I still speak to him today. I still think sometimes, what if I was at St. John's? It's just tough. There's not a lot of winning going on and guys want to go where they're going to have a chance to go to the NCAA and things of that nature."

St. John's recruiting situation is looking up now that the Red Storm secured commitments from guards Omari Lawrence of South Kent (Conn.) and Dwight Hardy of Indian Hills Community College (Iowa).

The Johnnies have one scholarship remaining for next year and hope to land Brooklyn Lincoln star Lance Stephenson.

Stephenson won't commit in the early signing period (Nov. 12-19) and is considering St. John's, Kansas, Memphis, USC and UCLA.

Durand Scott announces on Wednesday. Down to Miami, Uconn and Pitt.

-- One week of college basketball is officially in the books.

Number of ranked teams with a loss: Zero.

img11113316.jpg

Northeastern rejected Providence's attempt at a 1-0 start. (AP)

So things are pretty much going as planned ... except for at places like Alabama, Washington andProvidence. Holy smokes, those schools sure got off to rough starts -- particularlyProvidence, where Keno Davis must've left the magic he used last season to lead Drake to a Missouri Valley Conference title back in Iowa or something. Howelse to explain a season-opening loss to a Northeastern team that already had a 76-56 loss to Michigan to its credit?
So how bad was the loss to Northeastern?

For that answer, let's go to the Providence Journal and its online poll -- where (at last update) 76.4percent of readers deemed Davis' first game as either a "bad sign" or a "really bad sign." So that's clearly not good. And allthose PC fans who wanted the school to hire First Brother-in-Law-elect Craig Robinson are growing louder by the minute ... although not nearly as loud as theKentucky fans wondering how their Wildcats allowed VMI to score 111 points.

Anyway, here's the Monday Look Back:.

Best game of the weekend: The team picked ninth in the Atlantic 10 came into Cameron Indoor Stadiumand gave Duke a scare Sunday, thanks mostly to an unforgettable performance from Jimmy Baron. The sharp-shooting son of the RhodeIsland coach hit 8-of-10 3-point attempts and cemented his status as one of the nation's elite gunners. The only problem was that Duke is stillDuke, and Duke doesn't lose at home to nonleague opponents. And when Kyle Singler remembered this rule of life he hit four free throws in the final minute, then disrupted Baron's step-back jumper that would've given the Rams a lead with less than five seconds remaining to help Duke escape with an 82-79win.

Worst game of the weekend: That offense Michigan State showed in its exhibitionswas the same offense it showed in Sunday's opener against Idaho, leading Don Verlin to show his appreciation in his postgame pressconference: "I'd like to thank Michigan State for inviting us here and kicking our tails," he said. The score of that tail-kicking: 100-62. Sothe Spartans are averaging 110 points per outing through two exhibitions and one regular-season game, and they're looking like they might be a seriousthreat to top-ranked North Carolina next month in Detroit.

Win to brag about: Oliver Purnell lost Cliff Hammonds, James Mays and assistant Shaka Smart, but heseems to be adjusting well. The Clemson coach has his Tigers off to a 3-0 start following Sunday's 76-72 victory overTemple, which was significant because it was the weekend's only matchup between projected NCAA tournament teams. So the Tigers alreadyhave a résumé-building win just like the one they picked up early last year at Mississippi State, and that's a splendid thing to attain in the first weekof any season.

Loss to hide from: Mark Gottfried is off to a rough start in a make-or-break season.Alabama lost its opener Sunday to Mercer, a team picked sixth in the Atlantic Sun. The final score was 72-69, and it shouldbe noted that the Bears outrebounded Alabama 56-38 while proving that, yes, it appears the Crimson Tide will indeed be missing Richard Hendrix, contrary towhat some might've believed.

Player who deserves improper benefits: Looks like Stephen Curry is just as awesome as we allremember. The Davidson junior and star of last March's NCAA tournament got 29 points, 10 assists and nine steals in Friday's 107-83win over Guilford. Up next is a trip to Oklahoma, where a possible showdown with Willie Warren looms.

img11113322.jpg

Quincy Pondexter is shut down by Portland in UW's loss. (AP)

Player who should lose his scholarship: One of the shocks of the weekend wasPortland's 80-74 win over Washington. The worst stat line belonged to Quincy Pondexter, who has managed to go from apossible one-and-done prospect to a make-you-scratch-your-head junior in a matter of two years. Consider that Pondexter scored 21 points in the first game ofhis freshman season and zero in the first game of his junior season, which is one of the reasons Washington is 0-1 heading into a dangerous matchup withCleveland State.
Why I'm smarter than you think: I named Jodie Meeks the "Breakthrough player" in theSEC preview and he responded by scoring 39 points in Friday's season opener. Sure, Kentucky still lost 111-103 to VMI.But Meeks got 39 his first time out after averaging 8.8 points last season, and if that's not a breakthrough I don't know what is.

Why I'm dumber than I think: You know how I mentioned those people who believedAlabama might not miss Hendrix too badly? I was one of those people, which makes me stupid, stupid, stupid. Seriously, what was I thinking? The Crimson Tide sans Hendrix just lost to freaking Mercer.
Three things you should know before you go
1. If you saw the Washington State score you know the Cougars beatMississippi Valley State 76-25. But did you know the Cougars actually scored the first 28 points of the game and held MVSU to 16.7 percentshooting for the contest? That's pretty unbelievable, even against a SWAC team.

2. Curry wasn't the only CBSSports.com First-team All-American to play well this weekend. LukeHarangody got 30 points and 14 rebounds in Notre Dame's 94-58 victory over South Carolina-Upstate while Blake Griffinfinished with 24 points and 19 rebounds in Oklahoma's 83-54 win over American. The other two First-team All-Americans --UCLA's Darren Collison and North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough -- did not play this weekend.

3. The much-anticipated debuts of some of the nation's best freshmen mostly went well. DeMarDeRozan scored 17 points to help Southern California to a 78-55 victory over UC-Irvine; Tyreke Evans scored 19 points to helpMemphis to a 90-63 win over Fairfield; Al-Farouq Aminu scored 21 points to help Wake Forest to a 94-48 winover North Carolina Central; and Scotty Hopson scored 17 points to help Tennessee to a 114-75 win overChattanooga.

On tap: On Monday, John Calipari will match wits with his former assistant and school when DerekKellogg and UMass visit Memphis. On Tuesday, Kentucky will try to avoid an 0-2 start when it travels toNorth Carolina. On Wednesday, Mercer will try to notch another win over an SEC school when it plays atAuburn. On Thursday, John Beilein will attempt to give Ben Howland his usual tough game when Michigan andUCLA meet in New York's Madison Square Garden.

Final thought: I got a few e-mails from Drake fans suggesting Davis' loss inhis opener at Providence was karma for leaving the school that gave him a chance after just one season, but I think that'scrazy.

It's not that I don't believe in karma; I watch My Name is Earl and all that. But anybody whocriticizes a man for quadrupling his salary must be somebody who has never had a chance to quadruple a salary. That's a pretty easy decision to make whenpresented with the opportunity, particularly in a profession where the career expectancy isn't all that great.

As one coach once told me, you should get as much as you can while you can.

And that's a great motto, I think.

Another great motto?

Don't lose your opener to Northeastern.

And I'm sure Davis will learn that one too, as time goes by.

This is why Stephenson is so important, because him going there will be a sign to other players. I doubt that they will even fair much better with Stephensonregardless but it is a sign of change in the program.

AMHERST, Mass. -- Derek Kellogg still has a hard time believing that this is his office, overlooking UMass' William D. Mullins Center basketball courtthrough a third-floor glass window.

He was a sophomore on the basketball team when the Minutemen moved from the Cage to Mullins 15 years ago.

Derek Kellogg returns to his roots at UMass after spending the past eight years on John Calipari's Memphis staff.

Now he's their head coach.

On Monday night, Kellogg will play his former coach and the modern architect of this UMass program, John Calipari, when the Minutemen tip off ESPN's24-hour hoops marathon by playing at Memphis at midnight Eastern time in the FedExForum.

"I can't fathom how quickly time has come and gone,'' Kellogg said. The first-year coach already is 1-1 after splitting two games last weekin the first two rounds of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Southern Illinois. The Minutemen beat Arkansas-Monticello and lost to the host Salukis afterblowing a 15-point lead and seeing starting center Luke Bonner go down for a month with a strained left MCL in his knee.

"The whole process of playing here, coaching here, coaching at Memphis, and being back here seems like yesterday,'' said Kellogg, who was anassistant coach under Calipari at Memphis for eight years. "Yet, when I try to remember specific stuff from here, I don't rememberanything.''

Kellogg said he has found himself looking up at his office from the Mullins Center Court, waiting for Calipari to yell down for him to come up.

"I'm ecstatic,'' Calipari said about Kellogg's getting the job. "I wish it would have happened sooner.''

As much as Kellogg had wanted to coach before, he said he wasn't ready until now.

Kellogg said he'd had a premonition as a player that he would be the head coach at UMass. He is from Springfield, Mass. His wife, Nicole Flory, is afellow UMass grad. His parents still live in nearby Belchertown. If ever there were a candidate who fit his alma mater, it is Kellogg at UMass.

But the timing had to be right.

Calipari left to coach the New Jersey Nets after the Minutemen made the Final Four in 1996, a year after Kellogg had finished his playing career here.Assistant coach Bruiser Flint took over for Calipari. Star center Marcus Camby left with Calipari for the NBA, leaving Flint in a tough spot. Still, Flint keptthe Minutemen relevant, albeit not as nationally known. Flint, whose 86 wins in five years rank third all time at UMass behind Calipari and the legendary JackLeaman, led the Minutemen to the NCAA tournament in his first two seasons in 1997-98 and 1998-99. But they haven't been back since.

"Bruiser did a lot of good stuff, but the problem was the animal was so big that I couldn't have fed it had I stayed,'' Calipari said.

Flint was bounced in 2001. The administration tried to make a clean break with former Villanova coach Steve Lappas. That lasted five years, too. The nextattempt was for a Rick Pitino disciple because Pitino was a former UMass player. Travis Ford provided a new style and improved results, culminating with an NITfinal appearance this past March in his third and final season.

--John Calipari

Still, Ford was an outsider. UMass needed someone who knew western Massachusetts and understands how much different this part of the state is fromprovincial and pro team-oriented Boston on the eastern part of the state.

"They needed someone to bring the group back together, someone who was one of us,'' Calipari said. "They needed to reactivate the powerfulsegment that we had rolling. Derek lived it. He knows it.''

"[UMass is] one of those areas that needs someone like him," Flint said. "Up there, you have to go to the VFWs and meet people. … You have tobe someone that people can touch. They have to be able to see you and touch you. You have to be a part of it.

"DK is a local guy. It's funny -- when we recruited him, people thought we were wasting a scholarship. When he stopped playing, he always came backto the area."

Kellogg learned plenty from Calipari during his playing days and ultimately as an assistant at Memphis. Calipari can spin a tall tale with anyone, can selljust about anything and clearly can galvanize the members of a community to care as much about his program as they might about their own professions. Thepassion in Memphis now rivals that of any other school in the country for daily information thirst and simple sheeplike attendance at any event the Tigers holdat the Forum.

Kellogg won't get those kinds of results at UMass in the near future. But he's savvy to know he's not here just to coach basketball.

"I really believe the people here wanted someone who had played here -- to be a part of the community, to get UMass connected again with the state, with the area, with New England in general,'' Kellogg said.

How much did Kellogg want this gig when it opened up in April?

"I mean, how much can you say? With all my heart and desire,'' he said.

Kellogg's former fellow assistant and teammate Tony Barbee, who finished his UMass playing career two years before Kellogg did, left the Memphis stafftwo years ago to take over at UTEP. Had he still been on staff, Kellogg might not have landed his dream job -- because Barbee might have been tapped forit.

"Thank God Tony got the UTEP job,'' Kellogg said.

Barbee didn't want to talk about a hypothetical situation, but he did say that the timing was perfect.

"They needed someone to bring the community back,'' Barbee said. "As much as Travis tried, they didn't embrace the success. MaybeDerek, as a former player, a local product out of Springfield, can do it. He's already doing great things in the community outreach, and now hopefully hecan do things on the court.''

But the style today couldn't be any more different than it was in the mid-1990s.

When Kellogg played at UMass, the Minutemen were a slugfest team that slogged its way through 40 minutes. The opponents knew "they were getting into afistfight with us,'' Kellogg said of the players' tough "jam the ball down your throat" style. But Calipari has gone through atransformation at Memphis the past few seasons, adapting a dribble drive motion offense that was formed by Vance Walberg, a current UMass assistant underKellogg who was the head coach at Pepperdine before he resigned during last season.

"It's totally opposite how we played,'' Kellogg said. "We're trying to speed up the game, giving the guards morefreedom.''

John Calipari, right, has been a coach, mentor and friend to Derek Kellogg, left.

The times have changed in the league as well. When Calipari arrived in the Atlantic 10, he wanted to emulate then-conference power Temple. Now, Kellogg saidhe's trying to catch league power Xavier to see what has worked so well for the Musketeers.

And he's trying to play as much of a national schedule as possible. Don't expect the Minutemen to continue series such as going to Wisconsin-GreenBay or Toledo, which dot the schedule this season. Kellogg wants more games like Monday night's made-for-TV affair at Memphis.

Calipari did the series in part to get the Tigers a spotlight game after "Monday Night Football" to tip off the ESPN hoops marathon. But he alsodid Kellogg a favor. The series will return to Boston next season to get the Minutemen into the city that it once captivated a dozen years ago. The Minutemendesperately need to get a foot back in Boston after losing relevance there and after not even earning a headliner a year ago when Kentucky bought itself out ofa return game in Boston.

Kellogg said he must tap into the hundreds of thousands of UMass alumni within driving distance of the school.

"These are hardworking people here that want someone who wants to be here -- they want to see you out in the community and all year, going to dinnerand shaking hands and being able to touch you and be a part of the program,'' Kellogg said. "I love all that stuff. I grew up here. I have familyhere.''

Calipari is like family to Kellogg, first as a coach, then a mentor and now a close friend to whom he talks daily. Kellogg said he'll look down thesideline Monday night to see how Calipari is coaching and to get him riled up by waving at him once or twice.

Barbee knows what it's like to coach against Calipari in Conference USA.

"It's not fun,'' Barbee said. "Derek and I helped put that program together, recruiting those guys. We know how good a team theyare.''

Both UTEP and UMass are striving to be just as good -- someday.

"It's going to take some coddling to get the fans back,'' Kellogg said. "That's my job. It's not only to win basketball gamesbut to get people in this community involved. I remember when UMass was the program."

Kellogg said that when he travels to recruit, he constantly is told by fans in California, Florida and Puerto Rico how much the Minutemen were a fanfavorite during the 1990s. UMass was a draw. The Minutemen were a national team that played anyone anywhere as a consistent top-10 team from 1994 to 1996.

"If we can get even a little piece of that back," Kellogg said, "That would be unbelievable for us.''

After seeing Kentucky lose Roy was probably like "They suck. You can rest."

He better play in the Maui, though.

UConn on SNY tonight at 7.

I read that DeMarcus Cousins (sp?) is thinking twice about UAB now, interesting

As bad as i want to say otherwise and yell at u right now about saying we suck, im not sure if i can, i thought we would be very very solid thisyear....i know its only 1 game, but when u lose a home opener to VMI its hard to be excited....i still think we will have a better record than we did lastyear, if we will just even look at pat inside, i mean dude didnt get eye contact from anyone with the rock against VMI, it boggles my brain....we also didntrun 1 offensive set in that game.

As far as Hansbrough not playing, i dont really think it matters, he hasnt done anything in his 3 previous games against UK, and yall still won. The only thingthat makes me forget the VMI game is an upset tomorrow night. LETS GO CATS!!!!

I hope Durand Scott picks Pitt over Uconn and Miami. He'd be a great fit for that team and they could do some serious damage with him. Kid is a big timeplayer imo.

if any of you guys have tickets that you don't want for the 2K sports classic, i'll gladly take them off your hands

And what exactly was exposed about Duke that nobody didn't know? Was it that we don't have any bigs? Or was it that we suck atrebounding? Maybe it was that if we're not shooting well from the outside then we're gonna struggle? People love using the word "exposed"and don't even use it properly.

It couldn't be our perimeter D that was exposed because NOBODY will consistently shoot like Baron shot last night. Dude is an incredible shooter, don't get me wrong, but the way he was pullin' up from anywhere with a hand in his face every time is due to alot of luck and just "feelin'it".

Duhon/Redick/Ewing/Deng/Williams vs. Felton/McCants/Noel/Williams/May

If memory serves me correct, this game went to overtime with Duhon hitting a reverse layup to win it.

I don't know if this helps but I'll ask my brother tonight if Durand told him where he wants to go.

^ He'll lead Davidson through another undefeated season in their conference. He prolly won't score as much since they want him to be a pg. Coaches sayhe still can pull the trigger whenever he wants, but he says he wants to focus on improving his play at the 1 since that is where he will have to play in theL. I don't see Davidson going as deep as they did last year tho

Lets be real here. Curry isn't a PG and never will be. He'll always be an undersized shooting guard and should stick to being a scorer. Hedoesn't have the vision nor the handle needed to be a PG. The only thing he's going to do is destroy his NBA stock which I think right now is mid tolate 1st round (leaning more towards late 1st).
