All they had to do was make moves on the fringes. The Bron + AD + Defenders & Shooters formula very clearly works. With the contracts of Karl, Tim Horton, and Trez, they could've easily done that.
With Bron's age and AD getting hurt in the playoffs last year, they decided they needed to gameplan around someone potentially being hurt, and their answer was that they needed another "star". Russ just so happened to be the cheapest to get (I wonder why?). Very dumb move. Can't completely change the makeup of your team under the assumption that someone might get hurt. If one of Bron or AD actually did go out, you aren't winning **** anyways.
Bron is my guy, but GM is not the role for him.

They needed another certified star to help when Bron or AD is out that's just a fact and both of 'em had have missed time this year. They would be right in this same spot, 500 or below. I wasn't mad when they traded for and still not mad because I knew what Russ is and this is what the Lakers have always done. They make big moves, most of those times it turns out to be rings, a few times it hasn't worked. That's the game. They don't bluff.

In Russ defense he spent several years playing with Adams who is a true 5, and the past couple of years playing with Harden and Bradley Beal
Those dudes are pure scorers and also play the guard position
When he passed Beal and Harden the ball those dudes weren't giving it back because they were going to make something happen
He's also had younger players that would run the floor with him
LeBron brought him here with no young guns for Russ to run with, no pure scorers or legit knockdown 3pt shooters for him to dish the rock to and a big man that doesn't like to bang in the paint
On top of that Russ is so focused on wanting to give the Laker fans a good show that he's doing just the opposite
Not sure if Vogel is the coach to fix all those issues
Only coach in the league that can fix all those problems is Popavich or if Pat Riley comes out of retirement
Might be time for Coach K to make that jump to the league

Yeah we're just going to have to agree to disagree then. I just don't think you can/should be fundamentally changing the identity of your team solely to gameplan for someone to be out.
What happens when everyone is actually healthy? Russ doesn't do anything to help Bron and AD. He's one of the worst shooters and defenders in the entire league. For him to have any kind of success, he needs to have really high usage, and that makes absolutely no sense on this team when you already have the best PG of all time in Bron. The 3 man lineup of Bron/AD/Russ only has a +3.7 net rating, and that's with 2 top 10 talents playing one of the league's easiest schedules so far. Not good.
