Elite status. Let’s not pretend that he doesn’t have things to work on in his game that can make him even better than he is.

He just had 50 in close out game. 2x MVP and champion at 26 is as elite as it gets.

he makes enough mid range jumpers. He makes enough 3s. Obviously those are the shot you want him taking but as long as he makes a few and doesn’t bail you out, he’s great.

As dominant as Shaq was, his teams were getting swept literally almost every season at some point.

Kobe grew up, Phil came over & the rest was history. Kobe was also the leading scorer in quite a few of those West playoff series.

Shaq’s team accomplishments are obviously a testament to him….. they’re also a testament to Kobe & Phil…. And Robert Horry

Looking at the pressure both of them put on the rim, I don’t see an issue with the comp. Far worse comparisons have been made

Everybody has a weakness. Giannis isn’t going to become a 40% 3pt shooter. But he’ll get better at the margins of his game and refine as he aged accordingly. Shoot, we saw him hit 17/19 FTs when it mattered the most. In a game 6, in an NBA finals.

He’s in his prime right now. Those are the margins he will get better at. Like becoming a 70 something percent free throw shooter. Developing a safety valve jumper to not pick up charges. Floaters etc. those little things, will make him a better player. And you can see the path to that. He’s Elite already. A 50 ball, is a 50 ball. Idk how ugly it looks.

30/13/5 in a playoff run to a chip is crazy.
35/13/5 in a finals run is dumb.

what level is there past finals MVP?

Nobody is asking him to be a 3 point shooter. He still has improvements to make and that’s all that is said. Midrange, improved free throws, additional offensive moves besides a spin move and so forth are things that will make him even better than he already is.

So what are you even saying here then? You said Giannis isn’t “elite status”. Right now….but he is. The things you and I mentioned are things that he can add to his game that will make him a better basketball player.

Every elite player has margins and things like that, that they got better at as they matured. Giannis will be the same way.

He failed and broke thru. Like all the greats. Shaq been swept a few times before he won his first chip. Bron done lost to a Dwight Howard led team. Kobe done gave up a 3-1 lead. Etc etc etc. Nobody’s resume is clean.

It’s not really a narrative switch. More of recognizing where Giannis is on his trajectory. And that’s a 2X MVP, Finals MVP, DPOY….all by age 26. The people who were od down on him, was backlash to people building him up. Wining makes things clearer now.

Giannis at this stage in his career is in ELITE company. He on his way, if he continues this path. Nothing narrative or to roll your eyes about it.
This covers the bases

Again, it's undeniable that Giannis is on his way to Shaq's table. At the same age of 26, Giannis has accomplished more than Shaq had. The age 26 year for Shaq was the lockout season and they had been flaming out against Utah for 2 straight years before getting swept by Duncan/Rob

It's only a matter of time before Giannis gets on Shaq's pedestal. I understand not rushing him though, that's what I was getting at initially

With that said, some of y'all gotta stop spotlighting those trash centers while not mentioning Duncan, Vlade, Webber, Rasheed, Dale Davis (All Star 2000), Mutumbo (DPOY and All NBA 2001), D Rob (All NBA 2001) etc

I faintly remember Miami LeBron getting the Shaq comp that Giannis is getting now.

Giannis isnt Shaq and Shaq isn't Giannis. Totally different games, played in totally different eras.

Let's see if Giannis can 3-peat and then we can revisit this topic. But you'd have to be crazy to not consider Giannis elite or a top 3 player.

It sounds like you legit haven’t watched Giannis play. “Additional offensive moves besides a spin move”. Stop. He’s one of the most complete players in basketball despite not having a jump shot. I wonder if you’d apply defensive and playmaking abilities to some of your favorite players to call them “not elite”…. Probably not.
