The Timepiece Thread vol: READ THE 1st POST!!!

Happened upon a watch maker in town that had hella trinkets in his shop. I’m talking two cases with at least 1500-2000 watch heads and complete watches, all vintage. I’ve been to 3-4 other watch shops in town and they probably had 10 pieces between them.

Left with this Pepsi

Thinking about buying a watch as a present for myself for finishing grad school. Thinking about something from Omega or Rolex. I know nothing about watches but do love the Submariner but I’m not looking to spend that match. Also looking at a Speedmaster or Seamaster

Tips? Thoughts? Would probably go used

Save up for something that really catches your eye , don't spend 2 - 4 k on a watch unless it's something really liked for at least a few weeks.

I bought an Omega seamaster and returned it a couple months . I really wanted a Rolex GMT COKE , but couldn't afford it at the time.

sounds like the new seamaster would check off the boxes. how much are you looking to spend, if you dont mind me asking? you can get a new seamaster from an AD for under $4000. you can also get a pre-owned sub for around $5500.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. My budget was $2-3k but don't mind waiting and saving/doing some more research. Will probably come down to a Seamaster/Speedmaster or Sub. Where are the best places to buy pre-owned Rolex's online?

Watchrecon.com searches all the classifieds across diff sites. jomashop usually has decent prices on new and used watches too and they r a gm retailer so you aren’t buying from a person (if you feel safer that way).

If you like the sub but your price range is 2-3k I would check out Tudor divers too. Of what you mentioned the speedy is my favorite.

Chrono24 is one of the best in US in regards to the selection of models on offer and you can get some good deals. Watchfinder is a good uk/European website who deal in used and grey market watches. Also ebay could be a good source but I would only purchase from vendors who have known brick and mortar stores, online sites that can be researched independently with close to perfect feedback. Using these sites is a good way to get the "market value" of these watches.

I can say as the owner of the new seamaster it is a great watch and a few of the members here have the speedy who give more info. Rolex being as hot as it is right now it might take some saving and waiting to get get one at retail.

But remember to always keep in mind what you believe is important in making your choice; history, design, heritage, price, value retention because many sources of information may try to sway your choice.

I accidentally banged my Rolex on a restaurant table over the weekend, thinking nothing of it until I noticed a smudge on the face. It doesn't appear to be too deep, thankfully.

Any idea where one goes to remedy this? Or if this is even something that can be fixed. Excuse my ignorance.

Thanks in advance.

Ok....

First of all was it the sapphire glass or the metal on the case? Is the case precious metal or steel? If it's the bezel is it made of steel or ceramic?

All these are important in regards to how to go forward.

Assuming it's the glass you could get a cheap replacement sapphire glass fitted by a watchmaker for around $50 i think but this also depends on whether your watch has a Cyclops which could be more expensive and possibly have a different level of magnification. If you wanted to go official and do it as a service centre it could cost a lot more as they may force you to do a full service before replacement.

Now if it's the metal and a polished surface a cape cod cleaning cloth but use only the "juice" and a cotton bud as it's quite a precision based job. If it's a brushed surface use a bergeon polishing block that can simulate a rolex brushed finish very well.

Both of these are handy if your obsessive about your timepieces enabling you to do basic cosmetic repairs that'll save some cash and keep your watch looking new for longer.

Wow! How much was that speedy?

Price point. I’d be too concerned about bumping into things.

I think both were around $2k. It seems like his prices were right in line with what could be found on Google’s first page. Although a few of the quotes prices on vintage pieces were $50-$100 cheaper than my searches on forums. I think I’m going back for this one ASAP. I’m in a seiko quartz mood I guess.

Heard Omega doing a price increase on the new Seamaster next month. That new two tone gold and black is :hat

Nope, still haven’t upgraded my 5 year old 911. And probably won’t for sometime as I still only have 24k miles. Maybe you’re thinking of someone else?

I’ve been intrigued with Grand Seiko ever since they fully separated and made themselves a stand-alone brand. That watch will probably be 10-15k. I’m not sure if I’d ever invest that. That being said, I would like to own more timepieces on leather.
It's $21k. It's a massive piece. Saw it in Tokyo over the weekend.

Copped a few pieces while I was there. Pretty sweet buying experience. Prices are a little on the high side. I almost parted with my Daytona for a blue Sky Dweller

Picked this up for a buddy of mine. Wanted it for myself. Damn it.

Also, that Tokyo 2020 Speedmaster isn't really a Mitsukoshi homage. Dial is light metallic silver, and not white. And it also has one of those glidelock clasps! Too bad they're all sold out at the Omega boutique. This one is just for display. Definitely tried convincing the boutique manager to sell it to me. Resale is at $8,000 at the moment :\ The others are still available for purchase. You just have to wait for your turn and have to fly out to pick it up if you're not a local.

Talk me out of a 16710

Currently have a BLNR already but the versatility and a thinner piece would be appreciated.
the bracelet is terrible. and you will inevitably scratch up that aluminum bezel. did that work? :D

That guy is an idiot :p

Wayyyy to overpriced for what they are IMO. But that RX-78-2 white Prospex Spring Drive has a really long waitlist. Apparently everything Wako had was already allocated. But you can get the two Zaku green and red pieces even through a grey dealer for just retail (JPY 400,000.00 + tax)

Yeah I find the whole "gentry" persona is false as we are a year apart in age and he grew up in the same area as I did and there wasn't many distinguished English gentleman around. The watches he promotes are often supplied to him by companies which he gives mostly glowing reviews but often sells during his state of the collection videos. And then there was how he treated Archie, Christian and Federico he seems like a snake.
and more recently Giancarlo. Heard his channel got suspended for a couple of months because of a copyright strike for an image he used without permission.

Good to see Chris/HorologyHouse has a following here. Definitely one really talented dude. One of his videos just blew me away and made me get that piece. :{

Yeah he helped sell me on the seamaster. The watch looked so good on under the macro lens.

Another channel I've been watching recently is the guy who runs watchgauge and nth watches. I think he appeared on one of the urban gentry vids as well.

I recommend taking a look at the Rolex forum. There’s a lot of authentic brokers and watches on there... I got my Air King for a really good price on there.

Yup! That's Giancarlo. He also fell out with TGV recently. He runs The Daily Wrist Watch Check group on Facebook and some accounts on Instagram. RJ has sold me on a few pieces in the past few years. Great enabler.

That's the one i want. Just need to know how to coating holds up.

Just get the current $550... and liberally use sandpaper when you get tired of the DLC finish. Saved you $450 from getting the new one. :lol :smokin

By the way, the DLC holds up really well, but I have managed to just slightly scratch the clasp when i dropped the piece onto pavement. Otherwise scratch-free. Good stuff.
