Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta has a “Tilmanism” called the 95:5 rule. He has used this formula to achieve success in his other business ventures and will now endeavor to do the same with the Rockets.
“Most moderately successful businesses are good at about 95 percent of what they do,”
Feritta told Fox Business about the tenet, which he described in detail in his new book, “Shut Up and Listen! Hard Business Truths That Will Help You Succeed.” “It’s the remaining 5 percent that can determine whether the business excels or not.”
When Feritta met with general manager Daryl Morey and head coach Mike D’Antoni at the end of last season, he told them that the organization was doing 95% of everything right. They were coming off another 50-plus win season, having done so five of the past six seasons. The team was consistently making it into the second or third round of the postseason. However, to achieve their goal of winning a championship, they needed to find that missing five percent. To Feritta, D’Antoni and Morey,
Russell Westbrook is that 5%
“The 5 percent is the real difference driver,” Feritta said. “The tipping point that, when addressed properly and consistently, moves our (businesses) past that 95% level.”
