I concur. Smoking and alcoholic drink are unhealthy, agreed? So are sodas, so moderation is key. So now they are going to regulate moderation of our vices? Ruh roh. Fwiw, I don't think this will fly tho.

so take away the sodas but increase the fare, rent prices are just fine, etc. etc.

Personally I'm very anti-soda. There's no benefit to your body from drinking soda.

That being said, I understand people's outrage regarding being prevented from doing something by a higher power. No one likes to be told they can't do something, even if what they would like to do is bad for them.

Above all, I think we need to look at the law for what it actually represents. Ultimately, it's not going to stop you from getting as much soda as you desire. LArger sizes will still be available in super markets and convenience stores or you could go the refill/buy2 route

I see the law as an attempt to change consumer attitudes towards sodas. The buzz the law is generating even if it's surrounded by negativity is good in the long run, in that it's going to make more people aware of the potential negative health consequences of consuming soda. I think it's quite similar to the posting of calories law they passed a couple years ago. That law didn't limit what foods you could buy in a chain restaurant, but by semi-prominently displaying nutrition facts, it did get people thinking more about what they're putting in their body. That's what this law is about as well, in my opinion.

Cliffs:

The purpose of this law is more to get people aware of the health ramifications of their consumption patterns than to limit personal freedoms.

the children argument is important to make.  Several people have made the "it's your own fault if you want to drink 32 oz sodas and get fat" argument.  I think it's hard to apply that argument to obese children though.  Marketing and taste are hard factors to overcome for children even when they are aware of the health consequences of soda.

Sure most adults will find their way around this law, but it may actually prevent children who are on a limited budget or who frequent limited amounts of businesses.

@beh, regulation of cigarettes and alcohol already occurs through taxes.  Perhaps, a soda tax, as Bloomberg has been considering, would be a better strategy?

Ok so it's ok for them to butt in on people's lives because you don't drink soda?
So what about when they try to intervene and tell you that porn is bad therefor they will outlaw it, I bet a lot of you would then start to think about what Freedom means.

Sorry.

I'm a grown **+ man. Bloomberg and nobody else is gonna tell me how big my soda can be.

Glad I won't see this type of crap in the south anytime soon.

I don't even like soda like that but if you wanna buy a Big Gulp twice a day that's on you.

"take away our privacy and rights, fine. but I'll be damned if you ban my Baconators and 20 pieces"

One of the many reasons I can never live in a liberal state. Bunch of nanny state BS.

If you're dumb enough to drink a 32oz. big gulp, that's YOUR problem. At some point people have to be responsible for themselves.
Most of the people who drink that stuff though are never really educated about the long term health effects.  Hell, most of the country is nutritionally ignorant.

I support this.

This plan is not going anywhere...bloomberg tried taxing the soda and it did not work

and i work for coke, delivering soda is how i make my money

I think it's stupid.  Let people order whatever size soda they want.  Some places also have refills.

Funny how fat people are the last group that everyone openly makes fun of. Race, religion, sexual orientation are off limits. But nobody cares about the fatties
