Hubbs.
Demetrice Morley - It's not a matter of can he; it's a matter of will he. After not hitting anyone since November 2006, will Morley still be aggressive? He certainly looks like his old self out there running around showing his range and speed, but will he play physical? Will he close to the line of scrimmage in the run game? It's the one remaining on-the-field question surrounding Morley's return to the Vols.
Ben Martin - For all the talk he sparked last year in August, the knee injury ended that chatter and left him as a non-factor on defense last fall. Martin ended up playing on a handful of defensive snaps. Now, Martin is 15 pounds heavier, physically stronger and is healthy. Can he generate the type of buzz he had last August? To do that, Martin will have to show improvement in using his hands and pad leverage to get off blocks. Tennessee has no depth at defensive end, and Martin is a player who must emerge this spring.
Walter Fisher - This time last year,
Dan Williams and
Demonte Bolden had done nothing in their careers, but they used spring practice to take a step forward and set the stage for their emergence last fall. Now, they are the clear-cut top two defensive tackles, but they need help and that help starts with Fisher. A year ago, Fisher had 27 tackles and two quarterback hurries, but he only had one tackle for lost yards and no sacks. Tennessee needs to have him to be more of a disruptor in the backfield and more consistent. Can he take the step starting today that Williams and Bolden took a year ago?
Ahmad Paige - Paige has been a blur since he got to campus. Everyone has raved about his speed and his ability to catch the ball. The problem has been the concern over whether or not he could take a hit.
Paige was so thin that he has put on over 20 pounds and he is still the lightest receiver of the bunch at 180 pounds. This winter, Paige has again impressed everyone in one-on-one and seven-on-seven throwing sessions. Now the test is can he do it and take a hit.
Tauren Poole - Let's face it, Poole will have to absolutely explode this spring to be a real factor this fall given the bodies in front of him on the depth chart. But it has been a while since everyone has raved about a freshman before he has ever taken the practice field the way they have Poole. And when I say everyone, I mean coaches and strength coaches -- not just fellow players. Poole's focus and workout regimen have drawn great praise, but what can he do on the practice field when people are trying to tackle him? No one knows, but everyone including me wants to see it.
It goes without saying that one practice in full gear does not mean someone has arrived or established themselves, but with only 13 practices left and four of them this week, today starts a big stretch for a lot of players like
Chase Nelson,
Ellix Wilson, and others including the five mentioned above who will garner my attention this afternoon when they start playing football.
This *#@%% Ahmad is a !**$%+% Paper weight. Dude lights up 7 on 7s and ghost drills cus there's very lil physical play, but once the pads coem on, he'snon- existant.
