Black Culture Discussion Thread

Its crazy how Tracy Chapman disappeared into obscurity. As soon as I heard the song, I was like, "Oh thats that Tracy Chapman." Folks my age was like who is that?

bron really creating an impressive off court legacy but couldn’t find any reference to any of the housing being ‘rent free’ tho…that so many social media accounts go straight for the feel good/hyperbolic headline diminishes the real story

He pays for everything for them, it wouldnt be a reach for him to provide the students with housing.

forgot to link the article…

i’m sure the project is funded in part or wholly by his foundation likely subsidizing the costs for renting as well, which would still be super dope & gracious but if it were literally ‘rent free’ wouldn’t it be mentioned elsewhere?
There is rent free transitional housing for the families that needed it the most that already exists in the I Promise Village, where families stay still they can get on their feet. The apartments seem to be an expansion of that, a subsidized, low cost long term solution.

Good read: https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/16/entertainment/black-tv-series-blake-cec/index.html

A lot of racial/race based interactions on tv in general seem very sanitized IMO. Tv studios probably feel like they have to play it safe more now than ever.

And with the black experience being shown, for the most part it will be super hood/poverty or flourishing middle class blacks being shown. A little more nuance can be given there. There are other levels of living that aren't one of those 2.

And truth be told, we need for racist examples of white folks on tv.

We need more office racism and race based conflict that doesn't end up with the two sides skipping off joyfully into the sunset

Take a risk. Stop making everything seem so clean and ideal. The world is far from that. But again, it's safe to have/show white "allies" living and loving and fighting for black folks.

Nah show that them and their families laugh at and complain about us when they are in their spaces too.

I liked the Soul Food series for how they displayed the black (family) experience.

Topics need to be touched.

People need to be and feel uncomfortable about what is really going on out here.

It ain't just the blatant racism coming from the MAGA crew.

I just want a black show to touch on the behind the scenes/ smile in your face type of racism that we probably deal with more often in THIS city.

Give me a DRAMA about a white gentrifying family moving smack into the middle of the hood and how that dynamic REALLY plays out.

This man did an excellent job with that...Norman Lear

Current situation:

Hollywood writers and actors are still on strike.
If a deal isn't reached, it could have devastating effects on the entertainment industry - according to several experts.

Cause and effect: If studio executives and guilds don't reach an agreement, it'll delay more programs which could lead to canceled steaming service subscriptions and reduced revenue.

  • Last week, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that Disney's streaming service may not be a part of its core business.
Bottom line: Traditional television is dying, ad revenue is shrinking, steaming isn't profitable for companies, and Hollywood is basically shutting down as a tumultuous shrink rages on - things are rough for the industry.

Fun fact: So far, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is the only movie released in 2023 to pass the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

Ebro Darden Calls Out Drake for Never Speaking About Black Issues - XXL

Good move by Ebro. That being said of course Drake isn’t going to speak on black issues….he doesn’t consider himself black. Never has and never will. He’s a Jewish kid from Canada. Nothing wrong with that per say, however he’s no ally of black culture or black society. That’s one of the main reasons I don’t listen to him or play his music…..that and he has no talent as well. I respect the real.

We have a lot more direct and passive racism showcased on the news and social media this generation. Nothing about a Black show telling us White people are racist is ground breaking or going to "spark a conversion" compared to coming off the Civil Rights movement. I think its fine if Black people don't want to write or deal with race relations in all their shows and movies after seeing video clips all day on Twitter and IG. Trauma porn is a real thing and some folk don't care to watch another slave movie.

That said, there's still content out there that touches on it (serious and humorous tones), but how many White people are watching enough Black-centric shows where they would get an opportunity to feel uncomfortable?
