Building your own PC?

Intel kills amd in processors, Intel chips are easy to overclock. the new i7 processors so far aren't worth it now because they don't give much gainsin games compared to current quad cores, but the i7 are faster than quads in video editing. when choosing a processer decide if you're going to game pick acore 2 duo, or you're going to do video editing get a quad core. most games out dont really used quad cores but in the future they most likely are goingto. pick one up if you want to future proof your rig, and quads are cheaper because of the new i7. if you're going to do some gaming you can choose betweenATI and Nvidia i like ATI because they dont jack up thier prices, but you cant go wrong if you choose one of the two

I did a scan at crucial.com to recommended that i purchase

1GB, 184-pin DIMM, DDR PC3200 memory module

CT478525

  • Module Size: 1GB
  • Package: 184-pin DIMM
  • Feature: DDR PC3200
  • Specs: DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.6V • 128Meg x 64 •

for $44.99 each, is that a good price?

here's some more copy and pasted info if that helps,
  • Slots: 4 (4 banks of 1)
  • Maximum Memory: 4096MB
  • Standard Memory: 256MB removable
  • USB Support: 2.x Compliant
  • Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.
Q: Will my system recognize the maximumupgrade?

A: Possibly

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found at http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4251http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4251.

What makes you say that? They have some really good ones.

So, I just recently built my computer.

Here are the specs:

DP45SG Intel Motherboard (This board sucks, don't buy it)
Intel Q9300 Processor (2.5GHz)
4GB DDR3 G.Skill Memory (9-9-9-24 1.5V) I know the timing sucks, its the only one that works with this board
1TB Seagate HDD
LG BluRay Player/DVD/CD Burner
Antec 900 Gaming Case
Thermaltake Wicked Power 850W Power Supply
Asus 4850HD Graphics Card (Intel Motherboard only supports CrossFire not SLI, so no nVidia for me)
Rocketfish CPU Cooler
Netgear Wireless N Adapter
Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bit
Windows 7 Ultimate Beta (runs better on 7 believe it or not)

Got a pretty decent benchmark on it, just built it for fun. Since I work in retail I got the "Intel Big Deal" which is the only reason I'm usingthis trashy motherboard, it came with the Processor for pretty much just the price of the processor.
Haven't had any problems as of yet. Anyone needs any help ask away....

Also, Newegg.com rocks.

Its a decent computer, I REALLY wanted to go with the 790i SLI motherboard, since it supports both crossfire and SLI. However, it wasn't worth it at thetime, I had bills to pay. My next rig is going to have a Core i7 and Tri-Sli.

By the way, I do not game at all. However, I do graphic design and 3D design so its definitely worth it. My DREAM is to have a rig setup like the one inSwordfish. It will happen, i promise!

OH and in reference to the whole AMD is better for gaming, not true at all. AMD just released a 45nm processor. Just because AMD owns nVidia doesn'treally mean much when you have MOBOS that can support intel procs and sli like the 750, 760, 780, and 790i motherboards. AMD is TRYING to make something thatrivals the Core i7 965 extreme processor and they can't come close. Intel has the game on LOCK right now. However, if you're trying to save $$$$$ thenyou go with AMD because their processors are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper in price. Right now, Intel FTW

Even then..but I plan to o/c

Not just in gaming, but period. Intel is by far leaps and bounds ahead of AMD. It's quite sad because my first two PCs I built were AMDs...

Cant say, depends on when I build it. But my budget for a cpu/ram/mobo/video card will be around $600. Nothing crazy.

If you're looking to save money, and don't really want to play games with high end graphics, I'd just go with on board video. You could save abunch and be able to buy a few gigs of memory...

Understandable. If i don't build a new computer, I might just add a second graphics card, add 4 more GB of memory, and another terabyte hard drive.

2nd Graphics Card - $139.99
4 More GB of Memory - $84.99
2nd Terabyte HDD - $99.99

Might definitely be doable. Setup crossfire and go wild crazy...

By the way, I SUCK at wire management. Anyone have any tips? I'll post a pic of the inside of my computer...

Anyone have any tips? I've been told that I should run the cables BEHIND the motherboard, so as to keep everything neat. I have zip ties inside thecomputer also. The temp is pretty low but the presentation is horrific. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I can't help with wire management... As long as mine works, I could care less

But damn, a TB of storage?! What do you have on that drive???

BTW, if anyone is interested I have a Antec 900 for sale just like Str8Hood... I originally wanted a gaming rig, but decided I play my 360 more often... So Idownsized and built a micro-ATX build. About half the size of the 900

I'll go cheap too... PM me if interested.

ehh, thanks anyways.

Oh and on the TB, lots and lots and lots of "downloads". Every movie you can image, its fun.

What do you guys think about selling custom machines? I have my own computer repair company (see link in sig) and was wondering if this is something I shouldoffer. If you were to purchase something like this at a Best Buy, you'd be looking at well over $2000 just because of the specs. I mean you can go Core i7with GOOD parts, not generic OEM crap that you get off the shelf from a retailer, and end up at like $4000.

I've worked at Best Buy for a while and I got customers that come in and drop $3500 for us to upgrade a stock Dell. Maybe it can be on a "needsbasis" or whatever, but it can be EXTREMELY profitable.

This is something I would like. Big storage space,Bluray player,4GB of ram.

Im not into gaming on my PC, I have my PS3 and 360 for that. How does it run ? I just want something that runs super fast with barely any loading time. My pcslows down a bit when im browsing and on itunes. My music starts playing choppy and I always have at least 6 tabs open on firefox.

Dam itz Lou -

The computer runs amazingly. It boots up really fast, never lags. I also have a PS3 and 360 for gaming purposes, this is the perfect setup for me. Itwasn't all that expensive either. If you want, give me an idea of how much you're looking to spend and approx how much space you need. If you want dualor quad core or any particular type of graphics and i'll email you or PM you the parts you should get with approx prices....

Things I do on my pc...

-Browse
-Email
-Movies
-Music
-Download torrents & etc.
-AIM
-Photoshop at times

Im also looking for a dual setup. Im looking for something speedy so while im doing everything theres no loading time.

What do you guys recommend ? Looking to spend around $1000.

copy & pasted from slickdeals...

dont know the difference between dual and quad

E8500 Processor 187.99
ASUS P5Q-E LGA 775 144.99
AC Freezer 7 Pro 36.99
Arctic Silver AA-14G 6.99
OCZ Flex EX 4GB DDR2 115.99

Asus Black 6x Blu-Ray 99.99
Thermaltake 600W Purepower 94.99
Antec 900 Case 109.99

That will give you a pretty decent machine with a lot of possibility for upgrades in the future. You always want to make sure you futureproof your machine.
There you have a Dual Core Processor Wolfdale with a decent clock speed. 4GB of DDR2 Gaming memory (fast access time). A TON (terabyte) of hard drive space. Agraphics card that will support dual monitors as well as HDMI output up to 1080p. You have a Blu-Ray player. Your case. A phenomenal motherboard with a lot ofupgrade options for the future. A great processor cooler and some good thermal compound. If you want me to slim it down a bit I will.

All of these prices are from NewEgg.com and most of the parts carry free shipping.
