Gay Rights slams Kobe-- "what a disgrace" Kobe gets fined 100k

What a ridiculous amount to pay for a player being frustrated.

It still means gay to gays and they are the ones who are hurt by this.

Just because you deem it not to mean gay doesn't mean everyone else does the same.  I agree with properenglish funny that there are epic fights over the N-word on here but no sympathy is given for the homosexuals out there
I think the general misunderstanding on this board is that the LGBT community is trying (with help of the NBA in this case) to sensitize and discourage the normalization of that term with any old word that's said in frustration or as an insult. So there....

comparing words to words angers you?
I wouldn't dare compare gay rights to black rights like some do... but they're both derrogatory words said in anger.

What happens between the lines, should stay between the lines, no matter what the camera catches. Get the damn camera away from the bench.

If the players union don't appeal this they are a terrible union.

Is the "N" word offensive if used towards a non-black person?

Uh, no.

I disagree completely.  When you use a racial slur to denigrate someone, the intent is to debase them by association.  If someone were to say, "you're such a Jew" as an insult, how would that not be considered anti-semitic?  Using it as an insult is offensive in and of itself.

Just saying "that's gay" as a pejorative is offensive.  To go so far as to use a slur is even worse.

I get sexist/racist all types of prejudice when i'm mad, don't really mean it, but i'm just furious. This is just being human, but different rules apply to the famous.

That's not "human nature," it's a product of living in a racist, sexist, heterosexist society.  It's indicative of subconscious bias.
It's no more "human nature" than drunken White frat boys using racial slurs they'd never utter while sober.

In this case, an athlete said something in the heat of the moment to attack someone else, and he leveraged heterosexist prejudice to give weight to his insult.  Even in an irrational state, you have to recognize the intent of using something like a racial slur.

When you reach down as deep as you can for a way to hurt somebody, when you blindly grope around for a psychological weapon and you grasp this feeling of superiority over others exemplified by a slur, you are subconsciously exploiting the hierarchical structure that ranks White above Black, Christian above Muslim, Male above Female, Straight above Gay.

I am about as anti-David Stern as an NBA fan can get, but I support this fine.  Whether you like him or not, Kobe Bryant is a role model for a lot of young people and the message ought to be sent that this is completely inexcusable behavior, even in the heat of "battle."  I would expect him to issue a public apology, if not due to a legitimate respect for others than out of concern for his already-weakened marketability.

The media response will likely be hypocritical in the sense that White celebrities who say things like "that's gay" will continue to get a pass, but that doesn't excuse the behavior.  It isn't an all or nothing issue, where, in order to object to the singling out of a Black athlete, you have to JUSTIFY the use of a heterosexist slur.  It's not about taking the "gay" side or the "Black" side, (because, believe it or not, once can be both simultaneously), but about taking the side of justice and equality.
