I will never tip at a restaraunt ever again.

Agreed.

I'm a firm believer in tipping and think its classless when you don't tip (unless you get downright terrible service).

That being said, OP is NOT in the wrong here.  How you gonna add on gratuity for a party of 2.  Whether or not they were motivated by race is irrelevant.  Thats some BS right there.

-for being pissed that gratuity was added to my bill without my consent
-for thinking employers should pay their employee what they're worth
-for thinking the avg. consumer is suckered into believing they have an obligation to compensate employees they don't employ.
-for being willing to leave a 20% tip, and being enraged to find they had already taken 15%
-for understanding that while I may be applying for a job at the same place, I don't feel it's the customers obligation to cover my payment because I have other plans for better employment down the line and don't intend to be stuck "MAKING A LIVING" there.
-for assuming race was a tie-in when normally gratuity is only added in for parties of 6 or more
-for thinking that calling me well groomed and well spoken didn't have a silent "as opposed to _____" attached to it.

Which one is wrong and sad?  Maybe the last one..,. maybe... but you never can be certain these days. Even and still, my points are valid.
Too many random arguements in this thread.  Yes people we all understand if you tip based on service we aren't arguing that.

OP said his service was great

-for being pissed that gratuity was added to my bill without my consent - But it was $3
-for thinking employers should pay their employee what they're worth  - Ok understandable but that isn't the way it works with servers...you can take it up with corporate america
-for thinking the avg. consumer is suckered into believing they have an obligation to compensate employees they don't employ - We aren't suckered into it....we go out knowing we will tip if we don't want to tip i will do carry-out or cook
-for being willing to leave a 20% tip, and being enraged to find they had already taken 15% - they just saved you money

Like I said, wait a few tables first before you think tipping is unnecessary. You're an unemployed rapper, you're not going to be taking that $2.50/hr with a smile on your face guy.
I'm not saying it's unnecessary.. I'm saying that if I wait a table and do a good job, I'd like a HUGE tip. Anyone would. But a tip and a tax are different. Further more, a tip is not mandatory. Lastly, no one ever bought my CD, said they liked it, and handed me an extra 3 bucks. That would be stupid. But that's my service, is it not? So why should other services EXPECT tips? TIPS?! Getting them is cool. If any of you wanna tip me for killin enPHAN lyrically, I'll allow it. Cuz I so would
grin.gif
. But I'm not sitting here DEMANDING your hard earned 3 dollars. I have no grounds to. And neither do servers. All they have is expectations..

If tipping was ever made obsolete the waiters would still have to be paid, so the customers bill would be increased (probably by more than you'd tip if you had that choice) to make up for it.
The server still has to be paid, the money will always come out of the customers pocket one way or another.
At least with the current system you decide how much to tip, taking into account the fact that the server has to eat too. If service sucks, tip very little.

Again, I'm OKAY with that. Eating out is a luxury anyway (that's NOT what she said..). I didn't grow up in a restaraunt. I grew up learning how to master the stove my damn self. I KNOW it's cheaper to stay home and cook, duh. So I wouldn't mind paying a little more to eat out. I just don't like how sneaky and underhanded it really is when you break it down. Like folks said, you might as well add 15% to the price on the menu the way it is..... OR...they could just charge you the damn price flat out and not be so underhanded. It's not about how much it is, but WHY I have to pay more.

P.S. Maybe if you spent less on beats you'd be able to afford some books.

P.P.S. Maybe if you spent less time micro-managing MY life, you could develop one of your own. Maybe... I doubt it tho..

Selling your CD at the local Exxon is not a service guy. If you went to their house, put your cd in their stereo, played the tracks and changed them as the buyer wished, then I hope someone would give you $3.
