Information Technology (IT)

Congrats P, that's def how I try to do things. U let your work speak for itself and treat people w/ the respect that you expect in return and hopefully that allows u to succeed which it did in this case.

I filled out all my paperwork and just waiting for the background check to come back. I'm a lil nervous because they say they may check your credit since the contract is w/ a financial institution. Don't have any black marks but student loans got my score on struggle. If that comes back good I'll be rappin to yall from a new gig in April.
Prof Messer youtube vids were solid when I studied before I lost interest. That and getting the proper books online. Good luck.

Thanks. Trying to secure a help desk job to begin my way into the IT world.

I got a job offer yesterday for a ACTR position (IT specialist) in Arlington, VA. Sizeable bump in pay and save a few miles on the commute.

Goes to show how far you can get doing work in a timely manner and being friendly with people. Basically didn't even interview. Just had two guys who referred and went to bat for me to the contractor.

Congrats man , yup networking goes a long way. How long is your commute now?

Once I finish working overseas I plan on getting a job in Arlington, I'm done with long commutes.

I'm coming from Leesburg, so it still sucks. Just sucks less than driving over the bridge to DC. It was manageable at my current gig because I had an early shift (6-3), but this new position wants me in the office from 8-4. But I'll take it.

Accepted the offer for a new position, but man, feels like the hiring manager is 110% on board but HR is not really with it. So much communication and hoops.

Oh man, yeah its better than crossing the bridge but still bad. If I was in the dulless area furthest I could fade is McClean lol.

@Mark Antony  Congrats man !

Everybody in here is making moves

I been getting hit up on Indeed by someone from Horizon or something like that out of Vienna. He wants to know my salary requirements. What should I tell him. I make 70 in Oklahoma and by one sites measure their cost of living index is 2.5x higher. I might throw 110 out there and see where the conversation goes.

Look up the salary of similar positions in the dc area.

Cosign Prof Messer. I basically took notes on the vids, a few practice tests, then sat for it. I wish he did a series for these Cisco certs

Ha I got hired by Horizon a few years ago, but didn't take the position because I would've had to get a Microsoft cert within 90 days of my start date and didn't want to put myself in a bind.

what's up fellas. quick question:

i got my A.A.S. and a networking degree from a community college 5 years ago. upon graduating, i got hired at HP as a hardware guy. been working there for 4.5 years now, and lost ALL of the knowledge from the content i learned in college. it wasn't much, but i've lost it.

gotta get out of HP soon since they don't have anything network related in Seattle. what route would you guys suggest i take? Looking to become a sys admin or network admin. don't mind diving into help desk or tech support to build my confidence for a few years.

what certs would you guys go for, in order? i don't have any at the moment.

appreciate any help given!

Ironically my Director was looking for some people to work out in the Reston/Herdon/Dulles area a few months ago. If I had known, I could've slide the resume over to him. I will be on the lookout if you still would be interested in not going so far down 66 during rush hour.

The other dudes are right on it for the Senior Sys. Admin role. I'm not touching D.C. for anything less than 110k-115k range, especially you have a clearance with that too.

What location are you interested in?

They have some "hot jobs" posted they are looking to hire quickly, and a few months ago they changed the referral bonus to be paid out in the following pay period from their hire date instead of waiting 30,60,90 days

HP is garbage, so happy I am leaving them. Work conditions and morale in the office is at an all time low since I started here in 2013. Understaffed, company deadlines and reports, not enough equipment have made my office unbearable.

[thread="596982"]Hadn't been in here in a while, so thought I would catch up. Good to see you guys still rolling in here and helping out :nthat: [/thread]

Y'all hate HP that much? lol. I used to work for them, but things were pretty much boring after the corporate split so I bounced.

A lot of it is due to the contract I am on. The subcontractors usually last 4-6 months then bounce, so I get new co-workers often. I was just tired of that, being relied upon so much, no upward mobility, among other things.

But anyways, I got my offer letter and gave my two weeks notice today. :pimp:

Fellas any advice on moving into IT from a completely different degree/working in a different field? I want to make the transition however my bachelor & current career is unrelated to IT. Would you guys recommend grabbing a cert & getting my foot in the door or trying for a masters or even second bachelors?

What do you mean by IT?

Certs are cool but easiest thing would be working for an MSP for a year or 2.
