Is hip-hop to blame for the youth acting out? bunB and Lupe speak to teacher

Blah theres people that actually try and make a difference and not just talk about stuff like my friend lupe, (who recently made some statements that has me upset)
Rhymefest tried to become the alderman in arguably the most dangerous neighborhood in america, and lost because politicians tried to portray him as a Gangster rapper.
I mean if someone with honest intentions cant even be given a shot, then who can. I agree with him on the its teachers fault part, but thats also fault on the government for not paying
them enough.

Both made excellent points.

Why were people clapping for the things Lupe said?

Reminds me of the D students in high school who would say, "Why we gotta be learnin' about triangles, they ain't gonna help me in life anyway." Yet they had the same lack of interest in pretty much all their classes, mainly came to school to show how expensive their attire was, did 5 or 6 years of high school before graduating, or eventually dropped out.

I came to conclusion, why point fingers? just fix the problem, just like with your job sometimes its not about how it gets done its about whethere it gets done. no one thing is responsible 100 percent so let just get it together and work as a whole to change.

You can't look at it like a simpleton. Hip hop is REAL. How can you blame hip hop when these dudes are the product of their situation?

The public school system is a joke for the most part, kids shouldn't hate going to school. Y'all are getting at Lupe because what he said is the truth.

America lacks cultural solidarity to an extreme.

Anybody who blames complex social problems on hip hop is a shallow/ignorant individual.

As a teacher in Los Angeles, Lupe was spot on about his comment on meaningless classes. As a teacher, the only thing I need to accomplish at the end of a school year is a higher API for the school. As long as the CST says the kids are learning the country, school system and government could care less that the children are in fact failing their class.

I feel Bun Bs sentiment but he has to realize that times have changed and the children born in the mid to late 90s aren't the most apt at distinguishing lyrics from real life. All my kids do now a days is watch BET, skim youtube for "jerk" rappers with skinny jeans and recite every lyric...word for word... of a lil wayne song. With that said, more blame needs to be placed on these networks who put out borderline porn on television and the advertisers who add to the acceptance of such shows to be adorned by the youth of today.

I for one hate Lil Wayne with a passion and feel that his influence through ipods is far greater than my influence in the classroom. Kids idolize and live off every word he is says and yet that is all we hear on the radio. Little kids yelling out blood and not knowing how to recite a poem or write a paragraph, yet, they know every damned song on the radio? Word for word?

Until the system is fixed then it is meaningless to "teach" kids to do well on standardized tests.

I can understand why it's taught but it really doesn't matter in my opinion.  It's ancient.  Ancient texts, history, etc do not always translate well into a contemporary culture.

The way education is, I don't go to school to learn.  I don't go to school to care about what I'm studying.  I go to school to know the info being taught to me so that I can pass a test when tested on it.  After that it's dropped from my mind. plain and simple.
pretty much

So...pretty much we should all stop going to school after 5th grade...when we have a basic understanding of how the world works. Then from there...we all just go to trade schools. On top of that, none of us will know anything about history that's not considered "contemporary"(define this) since it's useless. France...had a revolution? Wait whose Shakespeare? Rome and Greece were once powerhouses?
Why are you even in college? What is your major?
I get what you're saying. But I just personally believe that stuff doesn't matter anymore.  And if you disagree, PLEASE explain to me the relevance of the Roman Republic as well as the Greek civilizations.  I think we should appreciate what the societies accomplished (for example: their artwork, their true version of democracy) but only to a certain extent.  That stuff doesn't matter in the world today. Well, in America at least.
I go to Seton Hall in NJ. Started as a finance major, switched to Public Relations with a minor in Sociology.

It's called engaging in difficult texts and analyzing them. Also, formulating answers to questions and being able to articulate them in a meaningful manner. These skills aren't something you are born with... it takes time to develop. The hell do you think lawyers, academics, journalists, writers, policy analysts, etc. do?

How are you throwing rocks at the humanities and yet you are a public relations major at a marginal university? What a joke.

It only took 2 pages for an unfounded jay-z/illuminati rant... sheep

as a teacher you say lupe was right, but another teacher in this thread said he was out of pocket.....
hmmmmmm.... interesting.

I've read every comment in this thread and the majority of you are saying the same thing.

school isn't giving us the information we need to live in this world, and rapper's aren't these kid's parent's.

other's think rappers DO hold some influence......to an extent I agree.....but like bun B said, let's just not put the blame solely on rappers.

but rapper's shouldn't switch the subject to movies and other forms of music all the damn time, if we all point fingers at another party, then we'll never get no where.....fix the problem with your genre then you can point finger's.

Iuno man its such a sad state i dont know where to began. Ill just like to interject some cliffnotes. I am a avid volunteer of boys and girls club, hosea williams foundation, 100 black men, a few others. Last year i did a meals on wheels, I went into homes with mothers working 2 3 jobs claiming broke, yet greet me at the door with some crazy %+#% peacock hairdo with some loud colored streak thru the bangs, nails did, with a magnum in the carport, living in govt housing, 42 inch plasma a 360, kid draped in latest fashion, yet old worn out furniture, kids sharing a bed, cigg burn in carpet, heating the house with stove the works. While there i watch and observe the mother and her interaction with the kids, there isnt any, one kid ask mom to join them and play she says nah i got you all these etc video games, toys go play with them, go play with your sister im busy. Her meaning of busy was talking about how fresh they gonna be at the club with a appearance of gucci mane and nicki minaj, also cackling back and forth about her baby daddy and his new girlfriend and notes posted on her facebook page.

Another instance is while doing boys and girls club, i often have kids get dropped off and picked up, they never ask anything about our programs, show an interest in what we offer, or what the kids did while in our supervision. We have functions and most of the parents dont attend, and when they do most are unattentive and again just there on there cells watching wshh, twitter, facebook. Kids run up all excited about events etc and parents are like yea cool ok super thats great, im on the phone, ok since you did good imma get you insert latest electronic gamming, gadget, clothing, shoes.

I take my girls to the park, and for the most part i dont see the parents especially mothers out ther shooting hoops with the kids, catching football/frisbee, playing hopscotch etc.. And if they are again they are unattentive and not engaged, and focused on texting, talking, social websites. Theyll be pushing the kids on slides/swings with one hand and texting, typing, social websiting with the other.

The kids get agitated upset want interaction, and usually a response of ill go get you/buy you insert latest electronic gadget/gamming/toys. Lets be serious, how many of alot of these single you parents have family dinner on a nightly basis, where they discuss issues involving themselves, the kids, and the world around them? How many are active in pta, sit and do homework with there kids uninterrupted? How many of these parents leave kids with grandparents often? How many of these parents are in one room, and the kids are of into another and the only interaction is come and eat dinner, do your homework, get ready for bed, or itching them out to be quiet cause they tired and dont wanna hear that noise or on the phone talking bout bs and cant hear.

I am willing to bet if there was a poll and study done, most young ppl, kids and parents alike spend more time interacting/talking thru social outlets/cellphones then one another in a week then they do one another in a month. How many of these kids have uterine siblings, and act out do to having a house of ppl who they are not related to dna wise and have different fathers, and one father is there all the time doing things interacting recieveing multitudes of love guidance etc and the other siblings recieve non and act out, make decisions lack direction etc? How many of these kids are getting good grades etc... but not retaining knowledge and only doing good because of a reward system such as ill do/get/give you this if you do such and such? Thus making life all about self-worth value=materialistic things.

How can a person instil hardwork morality and values and self worth, when 1. you are living and perpectuating the opposite, aka go to school work hard to get a home, when said parent did non of these things and have these possesions by spitting out babies and in result getting these things thru a govt handout. 2. how are they suppose to so call believe in the future when you have a semester of college invested in your hair nails clothes shoes jewelry instead of a interested earning roth/ira account/cd/savings account? How do you expect them to ascertain these goals of highre education when you live in a poorly education system area and instead of magnet school/m2m or paying for better education elsewhere you spend that money on psp ds 360 games and jordans? Just to make your kids happy and keep them offa back, or the old overused cliche, " i just wanna give get my kids all the things i didnt have growing up. Well how about iuno... out of nowhere thought........ A trust fund. Life insurance, a non-bearing bank cd, a college fund, a saving accounts. Trips to different areas states country, exposure to other cultures.

How is a kid to believe you have their best interest and believe in their future, when you arent even willing to invest in it? I cant believe with all the examples i just listed ppl want to blame rappers for this. It is absolutely obsurd. black ppl were flamboyant extravagant well before rap, hell well before they were black ppl" ie back living in afrika" Past generations were also its just that it was earned and with that also moral fibers and family structure, principals were taught. My parents never gave me %@# for cleaning my room, doing homework, etc. It was deemed as my job, seeing as i didnt pay bills, pay for clothes on my back, food in my mouth. That was my duty.

As far as the topic of school although times are way different. I went to school in the 70's 80's one thing that followed me and the only thing that helped me in life in high school was my econ classes, and life set skill courses, and work study. Learning to tie a tie, wear a suit, do interviews, fill out applications, write checks, balance a checkbook, hem clothes, grocery shopping, budgeting, How to keep a family structure, parenting skills, how to have a healthy relationship, sex education etc the works. Yes i did recieve these life learning lessons at home, but the reinforcement at school helped tremendous. My senior year of work study was invaluable. Being graded on how to look seek employment, my work ethic, performance on the job, filling out applications, resumes, cover letters etc. How to go to the bank and ask for a business loan, how to find and seek grants for hosuing/schooling.

Im sorry but these classes have helped me more then the dietry habits of a tyrannasorus rex. Also another tidbit. I was researching A single parent with one kid cost 14,500 a yr. that would be the equivalence  of 30-35 hrs a week working minimum wage without including ny govt assistance, nor child support entered. Lets see how many of these so called 2 and 3 job having parents are working 2 and 3 jobs just so they can make 14,500 a yr.....? they are working all these hrs etc to provide materialistic things for themselves and the kids, but in doing so neglect providing time, guidance, direction etc. So these kids value those things and see that as a means of success, because that directly affects them. It has really nuttin to do with rappers persay. It moreso has to do with parent equating love gudiance morals values with possesions, then other kids who parents who do the same, then it becomes a whole my parents love me do more for me cause i got more jordans then you, i got more 360 games then you, my parents car is better then yours. Your cooler cause you have better/latest stuff. They see this as success, and when you have parents perpetuating this, kids cosigning and agreeing with it, and society pushing it, and glorifying it. all rappers do is take all that into account, develop a rhyme scheme, get a dope beat, and spit a hot 16 over it.

All to often i see, these career days and ppl comming out and talking to the kids, and the first thing they talk about is the fresh cars/houses etc they got. yea they emphasize on education, but its in one ear out the other, when they see the preacher getting it by fleecing his sheep, parent getting it from govt asst. child support, dope boy from slanging. So its in our human nature to take the easiest way to get something/somewhere. Instead of wordly things, emphasis should be on security both financially, and emotionally.

I honestly dont know what can be done, and i dont think things will ever change as a whole. I think it has spiralled so far down, and the uphill battle is to much to climb from.

It will always be the parents' fault first and foremost... people don't learn because education is not valued in the household. Look at other cultures and educational success rates. It's ingrained in the child's head by those closest to them. People overplay the significance of a show or song while undervaluing the importance of a good parent.

Edit: Lupe should know this first and foremost. Read up on his childhood. Blaming teachers or rappers is a cop-out. It's pathetic.

I think alot of ya'll are underestimating how powerful and influential pop culture is. Hip Hop culture isn't the SOLE problem. I don't understand how you can't see it's PART of the problem. I don't know where ya'll live at....but in DC I see the effect it has on the youth everyday. Parenting can only go so far. All of us know that from our own experiences growing up. Specifically when you're dealing with inner city youth...most of them are coming from broken homes where they're even more impressionable.
