Most of the debate last night about Ball was really good and I'm not sure exactly where I fall other than Lavar needs to fall off a cliff somewhere.
And not because he's black.
Lavar Ball represents everything I loathe about ESPN and today's Sports journalism. Who can yell the loudest and be the biggest clown will draw the most attention and they don't even really have to say a damn thing that's accurate or true, just be wild and crazy. SAS, Skip Bayless, Ball, Chris Broussard.
No one focuses on the actual games anymore, instead they focus on the gossip. Sports gossip. Far as I can tell, it kinda started with the OJ case and the Nancy Kerrigan case, those were HUGE headline grabbers, and ever since, we've started trending towards all this gossip bs and no more actual sports discussion or debate.
Lonzo Ball is drafted, the mic goes into Lavar Ball's face. Think about that.
On one hand, Lavar is a brilliant father in that he is sort of keeping Lonzo out of the media limelight by deflecting all the attention onto himself, that's very smart, and from what I can tell, I think it's benefiting Lonzo.
On the other hand, why the **** does the world insist on listening to some dad? Where was Josh Jackson's dad? Why didn't I see Fultz's dad? Or Monk, or DSJ, or Fox, or Shaq's, or AD's, or Iverson's, or Blake Griffin's? Why don't those dad's have interviews nightly? Why aren't they wrestling? (Wrestling alone is reason enough for me to be done with a person )
Colin Cowherd used to be a VERY smart, intelligent, well thought out person when he was the local guy here in Oregon. Very reasonable, very knowledgeable, was really bright and was a great listen. Then he got hired by ESPN and oh my God did he flip the script. Suddenly he was Hot Take master and sayin anything he could to drive up ratings.
Jim Rome hasn't had an actual sports observation in 20 years, he just tells jokes that involve teams/players and coaches. "Whoa man, that Super Bowl was fresh, the Patriots really brought it last night". Rack em. National radio host, doesn't say a single word about the actual game, or matchup, or strategy, nothin, just spits stupid *** takes, and makes millions off that garbage.
To me, Lavar represents all that.
Know who else is like that? Tebow. Biggest farce there is, and yet media/fans eat him up.
Manziel too.
So I don't see it as a black/white thing, because both sides have the same type of media driven following that the masses just devour. It's dumbed down the average sports fan so damn much it's ridiculous. And frankly sad.
Lavar has zero need, reason, or business bein on TV, or radio, or anywhere else other than in the seats cheerin on his son(s). You can surely do the dad interview now again, or show them cheerin during games, but all this other nonsense is flat out garbage and the world is worse off because of it. That ain't Lavar's fault by any means, he's soaking in the 15 minutes of fame, it's society as a whole that is to blame for a random father to become a mega celebrity, same as a sex tape turned the Kardashians into historical royalty.
