This is what I mean. Getting an $18 plate and a Sprite and throwing in a 20

And what's wrong with that? Pay for what you ate, drink and leave some for a tip. Why should you have to cover other people especially those who go ham on the menu?
$18 plate plus $4 drink + tip and tx >>> $20

The thing that gets me, is when someone's item cost 18.99 and then they put in a 20. As if there is no tax and no tip. Come on now.

@Mojodmonky1 , the situation I was in was messed up. I was a guest of someone and they were out with their friends and their friends s/o. So I didn't really KNOW these people at all. I wasn't really trying to "embarrass" the person that I was there with, you know. But I was semi-pissed man.

I am not a fan of the everyone pays the same tactic.

I have 4-5 close friends that I wouldn't mind doing that with, but a group of 12. Nah man. I'm good.

appetizers  is something I don't order. I am usually full after a meal and most places bring out some sort of dinner rolls, so I view appetizers as somewhat glutton in certain situations. Maybe it is more business like to order appetizers or something. Like ordering appetizers  at Cheesecake Factory is so not needed.

Usually when the bill is 40 or less..
we play credit card roulette..
we let the waiter pick what card he wants to use..If its more than 40, we might have the waiter pick 2 cards..So far 5-0..

if the entire bill is $40 or less?

damb... i need to try and institute this policy.  i love to gamble and will gamble on anything.  this adds a nice little twist to a casual meal.

maybe it's a regional thing, then... or maybe i just don't go to the same restaurants as you guys.

here, the servers almost always ask "how are we going to handle the checks" or "is this one check or separate"?

me and me friends, either back home or here at school, cover what we order + tax/tip. none of us are established/ballin like that yet to be covering meals or nothing. im pretty quick with math so its never a problem, it only sucks when everyone has 20s and no change. if were short, someone will pick it up the slack. we trust each other.

one of these days in vegas (ive been trying to convince my friends to do this for the last 2 years), i wanna do dinner roulette: everyone puts in for dinner, someone goes into the casino and drops it on black or red. either dinner is free, or you pay double. yes, i also i have a gambling problem

So this friend tells me, "Eat up because they are probably going to want to split the bill evenly amongst everyone." So I am like damn. So I get my dish, which was like $12, I ended up paying $40 for my meal. I ate some of the appetizers but no way I should have came out like that.

So my question, is it normal to just "split" the bill like that? I mean damn, I didn't know it would have been that drastic.

Naw, that's not normal, but I understand why they did it that way. It's easier to divide the total price by the # of heads, but I'm used to paying for exactly what I ordered WITH a tip.

These days we just write down how much each person owes with the last 4 numbers of their CC/DC on the back of the bill along with everyones card and your server should be able to
handle it.

pretty much this.

if its more casual with 1 person, like lunch at panera or something, we usually take turns buying. unless its a female friend....
