Official 007 "Skyfall" Thread. Out Now!

I see what you're saying

Point well taken. And I will admit to being curious about how a talented actor like Elba would interpret Bond.

I guess I spent too much of my time reading the old novels when I was younger. Tends to make one rigid and narrow minded. Much like Fleming himself.

I actually didn't mean to say I agreed with you to a certain extent. I agree with you whole heartily with regards to Fleming being racist/prejudiced. I tried reading some of his novels a long time ago & stopped. One of the books I remember was For Your Eyes only where he refers to Cubans as monkeys & Cuban women looking like monkeys in dresses. There have been a lot of prejudiced writers that people don't know about like Tolkien.

Ouch.. poor placement with those posters.

I've liked Craig's Bond films, but I wasn't that excited for this new one for whatever reasons... but the trailers and commercials have worn me down and whatever reservations I had are gone. I'm really excited, especially with all the positive reviews so far.

Interesting post from Collider regarding Idris Elba & the Bond role. Timely too as it was posted yesterday...

Big J 33-
I grew up on Bond films. I've watched all of them multiple times. This one has me excited to see. There have been several cynical film blogger types & good ones too that have said this might be the best Bond film or at least the best one in the last 20 years or so. Wife is excited to see it too...

The buzz on the upcoming James Bond film, Skyfall, has been ecstatic, so of course it’s time to rush past the present and look to the future. And the future could hold a black James Bond. If that seems like a highly unlikely possibility, then it should come as a surprise that Bond producer Barbara Broccoli met with Idris Elba (Prometheus) for the role according to Skyfall actress Naomie Harris. “I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris,” said Harris, “and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond.”

Hit the jump for more.

Despite his conversation with Broccoli, Elba doesn’t seem interested in the role. Earlier this year, he said [via Yahoo! Movies UK] “I don’t want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.”

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what he would be called until he established the character beyond skin color, which I’m sure he could absolutely do. However, until the first movie came out, he would be identified as the “black James Bond”.

While I can absolutely see Elba wielding the Walther PPK with a license to kill, it seems unlikely that he’ll ever don the tux simply because Craig is contracted for two more Bond movies. By the time Craig is done with Bond, the 40-year-old Elba could be brushing up against 50, although Craig has said, ““I am not going to outstay my welcome. Someone else will have to have the chance to have a crack at this.” Either way, it’s cool to know that one day a suave African-British gentleman could play James Bond.

Writers are already brought in for Bond 24 and set to release late fall 2014.

After all the drama they went thru to get Skyfall made, the fact they are already working on 24 is great news. Also saying that they are prepping Bond 25 as well. :smokin

If I remember right, Tom Hardy was in the running once before, I think when Craig got it.

I would give anything to see Nolan in charge, keep Craig, and use Hardy elsewhere, most likely as the main villian. Please, somehow, make this happen.

This would be SO dope :smokin

Yeah, I think Craig is the 2nd best Bond ever. Has a pretty good shot to challenge for that top spot depending on Skyfall and if he continues on, which I hope he does.

wow...Idris playing Bond would be beyond sick! I'm shocked there have been actual talks and the broccoli's are actually down with it. Perfect black bond imo. Just perfect

^You know there'd be an uproar if Idris became Bond.  There was uproar alone when he played Heimdall in Thor and when there was a rumor that there would be a black Spiderman.
And rightfully so.

Look, I'm Black, and but I find the idea of a Black Bond laughable. Especially given the blatant racism and jingoism in the original Fleming books. This was a man who regarded White Irish folk as inferior, let alone Blacks.
Fleming books aside, Idris would play the role perfectly.  He has the swagger and build for it.  I know it'll never happen with him being Bond but I at least would want to see Idris in a Bond/Bourne Identity/Mission Impossible spy type series though.

Saw the James Bond Documentary Everything or Nothing and it seems like the franchise have had problems from the beginning. Really interesting and a must see documentary for James Bond fans.

I just saw the doc too & didn't think to recommend it to NTers in here. Repped. Also found it available on YouTube. Not sure how long it will be available but here it is...

i hope this movie doesn't disappoint. quantum of solace was ok but that's just because i was expecting better since casino royale did so well. eva green :pimp: :wow:

Quoting this

I wouldn't care less about the race of the actor as long as he has the personality to be James Bond... but I don't want a black James Bond or Asian James Bond just for the hell of it/the marketing ploy.

Im hyped for this... BUT I hate how the recent Bond flicks have strayed from the old version. Pierce was my fav Bond.

i'm not going to watch any of the new bond movies...
what appealed me to watch these movies were the new techs bond was gonna use, the last one he didn't even use much -if at all.

I see what you're saying & agree to a certain extent, but I think in this day & age we shouldn't be tied to someone's color or gender when considering roles. One example I can think of recently was the movie Salt. That role was supposed to go to Tom Cruise (who opted to do Knight & Day with Cameron Diaz) & the role went to Angelina Jolie instead who I think killed it. I think if done right a black actor would be great to see (for me anyway).
Salt is different because it was a new movie and the character wasn't established. When Cruise dropped out they changed it up and it worked out well with Jolie in the role. Bond has been around for decades and has always been played by a white guy. We still think of certain iconic characters by their race and gender. Writers aren't going to make Superman Chinese because it would seem off. I'm not saying changing up a character can't work, it just has to be creative and good enough for people to accept it. Characters always get changed around and re-imagined, especially in comic books.

Going to watch that documentary that was posted. Repped.

I completely agree with the points you made. There is a difference between the Salt role & Bond. Salt was the only example I could come up with for the point I was making. I couldn't think of any established/iconic characters (except the new Spiderman, but that didn't apply in this scenario).

I'm cool with him or another capable actor getting cast so long as the film is good. I remember there was a a huge broha over Craig being cast because he was blond & blue eyed then Casino Royale was the best Bond film done in years.

I haven't read or seen a bad review of Skyfall from anyone that's seen an advanced screening from folks like SlashFilm.com to the TV show Extra. People are even saying this might arguably be the best Bond film ever (& these comments are coming from people who are long time Bond fans who've seen the film).

They need a "heady" bond film like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

it needs to be more about intelligence than action.

From the trailer it looks like they re-introduced a younger Q so maybe we might see some new gadgets

I don't think so. As I understand it, there aren't a lot of gadgets in Bond's hands this time. The theme of the movie is about secret agents failing to keep up with accelerating technology.

Daniel Craig's attire in the bond movies is amazing, man even his everyday style is nice.

:smh:
I want that Daniel Craig swag
