Donnie Walsh nearly resigned from New York Knicks upon learning of hiring of Isiah Thomas

Isiah Thomas nearly climbed the corporate ladder from consultant to Knicks president on Day 1 of his new job with the club.

The Daily News has learned that Donnie Walsh considered resigning after Madison Square Gardenchairman James Dolan made the controversial move to hire Thomas, butWalsh decided to continue running the team despite his objections toThomas having a role in the front office.

"Donnie finds thisentire thing distasteful," said one NBA source. "He's had secondthoughts about staying but he wants to finish the job."

Walsh, who did not return phone calls yesterday, is under contract through2012. Last month, he denied a published report that he wascontemplating retirement for health reasons.

Dolan's insistenceon giving Thomas the ambiguous title of consultant angered Walsh, whofor two years has been trying to hire former St. John's All-AmericanChris Mullin as general manager. Dolan has refused to sign off onhiring Mullin and clearly has designs on giving that position toThomas, who also holds the title of head coach at Florida InternationalUniversity in Miami.

At Stoudemire's introductory press conference, Dolan instructed Walshto publicly thank Thomas for his assistance in recruiting Stoudemire. There are conflicting accounts on what role, if any, Thomas had inhelping the Knicks land Stoudemire, who had previously played forD'Antoni in Phoenix. Most league executives acknowledge that Stoudemiresimply went to the highest bidder. In fact, Stoudemire's agent, HappyWalters, said in July that Stoudemire hadn't even spoken to Thomasuntil Dolan's July 4 bash.

Ill guarantee he doesn't become the GM or takes Donnie's spot as president of operations. Other than that what position he gonna take? Some back seat assistant job? He'll just be another named face associated with us.

Plus some failing team with even worse team mangament + owner might end up hiring him. Detroit

Not getting at you, but your guarantee doesn't mean much

Its just an idiot move from a very stupid owner. After the drama of Zeke in charge, the awful team he assembled, the lawsuits, the fact that he helped make this team a laughing stock.. AND the apparent fact that Walsh wants nothing to do with him near the team.. Dolan still throws a bone to his friend despite every sign saying he shouldn't.

Hopefully its just a minor job and not a sign of things to come, but no one should deny the ineptitude of Dolan and its an unsettling move.

Thomas must have them pictures of Dolan sucking someone's nut sack to be back in the organization like this. Dolan needs to be done with.

im staring to think that they (zeke and dolan) are gay lovers.

Like really? what would posess you to REHIRE the man and basically force him upon your new staff. and continue to do so even though your main man in charge TOTALLY dislikes this? I do NOT get it. and on top of that MAKE it be known that the Stoudemire acquisition was due to this man?
