Source: Harbaugh has told 49ers he’d be OK with either Baalke or Lombardi as GM
Quickly, because things are happening at a rapid pace…

An NFL source with knowledge of the situation told me just now that 49ers owner Jed York has narrowed his GM choice down to either Trent Baalke and Mike Lombardi with an announcement possible as soon as tonight .

The most likely scenario: Baalke named tonight, though, according to the source, Lombardi met with York today and there is still a chance Lombardi gets the job.

York wants to make a decision tonight, so he and his GM can interview coaching candidates tomorrow, the source said.

The source also emphasized that Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh remains far and away the team’s No. 1 target and has signed off on either Lombardi or Baalke as the GM.

York and Harbaugh have had talks throughout the last few days, the source said, and are believed to have had several more today.

Harbaugh is a long-time associate of Lombardi’s. The source said that Harbaugh and Baalke have spent time together the last few weeks and that they share representation–power agent David Dunn has represented both at times.

The conclusion: Harbaugh is likely to be hired as the 49ers’ head coach, possibly as soon as tomorrow night, the source said.

Harbaugh is believed to be returning to the Bay Area tonight and may meet face-to-face with York and the GM, presumably Baalke, tomorrow.

Other coaching candidates believed to be interviewing with York and his GM tomorrow: Raiders’ OC Hue Jackson and NY Giants DC Perry Fewell. There may be others.

But if Harbaugh accepts the 49ers’ terms, the job will be his.

Also, interesting to see how Mallett performs tonight. I haven't seen too much of him, but he's a definite possibility for us. At best, he could be like a Cutler-type.

If this means Harbaugh is in tomorrow or Thursday, I'll be okay with it...

Mallett looked decent on that drive there. I like him better than Newton (at least) because he's learned in a more pro-style type of offense.

Once again, Jed York makes a headscratching move in less time than he needed to take.

God I hate having ******s as owners. Such a joke.

well to be fair, its probably his way of showing people he means business. if im not mistaken, the last time we hired a stanford coach ended up becoming the greatest coach ever.

If the Niners don't get Andrew Luck, would you draft Mallet with the 7th pick? If available? (I have no idea how high his stock is in the draft)
