Random question but since we don't have an equivalent law in Belgium, how do Americans feel about your false statement law? As in lying to law enforcement about matters relevant to the investigation being a crime itself, separate from lying under oath.

Over here we don't really have any penalty for that. The only very minor consequence is that provably false statements can be used as evidence to support corrupt intent if any associated charges have an intent requirement. The sole act of lying, even if clearly intended to obstruct an investigation, isn't covered by our obstruction of justice statute either.
