Pressing matter: Chris Cook clear about his role with 49ers


As Tarell Brown was signing his one-year deal in Oakland today, cornerback Chris Cook was signing a one-year contract on the other end of the bay

Like Jonathan Martin and Blaine Gabbert before him, Cook - who spent four, often rocky seasons in Minnesota - said he was looking forward to "revamping my career" with San Francisco. "I feel rejuvenated now that I've signed my contract," he said.

Cook, who is 6-2, 212 pounds, said the 49ers didn't mince words about how they saw him fitting into the defense. "They want me to be the press guy," he said. "And that's what I like to do. I feel like I'll fit in well with the one-high (safety) scheme that they like to run. I came from a two-high scheme. And I feel like a one-high scheme and a man-to-man scheme fits me well."

The arch-rival Seahawks, of course, specialize in that one-high-safety concept. Asked if he felt he bore any similarities to Seattle's tall, long-limbed man-to-man specialist, Richard Sherman, Cook said, "He's a great player, and I respect his game a lot. We have similar body types and stuff like that. But other than that, I don't really compare myself to him."

Said Cook: "I'm just coming in to do my job to the best of my ability and help the team continue on a winning path."

Where the 49ers stand at cornerback

No position on the San Francisco 49ers has more uncertainty than cornerback -- and it's not even close.

The team only has one solid starter in place, but there are several players who could emerge. Of course, the 49ers could add a cornerback in a dwindling free-agent market and will surely pick one or two in the May 8-10 draft.

Let's take a look at where the 49ers stand at cornerback:


Brock
Starters:

Tramaine Brock: A year ago, no one would have guess he would be the most reliable cornerback on the team. But Brock made the huge leap from a special teams to the No. 1 cornerback. He was terrific in 2013 and it earned him a four-year contract extension.

Chris Culliver: This is very fluid. The 49ers have confidence in Culliver, but, in a perfect world, he will play the nickel. Culliver, who has proven in the past he can play, missed all of last season with a torn ACL. Still, he's the type of player who would likely be a better No. 3 than a No. 2.

Slot candidates:

Eric Wright: The veteran is talented and has performed well in the past. Yet, he didn't do much last season. It was a mild surprise the 49ers re-signed him to a one-year deal. Wright, who was inactive by the end of the season, has a chance to help if he can gain the coaching staff's trust.


Cook
Chris Cook: He is the 49ers' lone offseason addition at the position so far. Cook, a second-round pick by Minnesota in 2010, has struggled at times -- on and off the field. But there are some positives; he's 6-foot-2 and the team wants him to play in press coverage. Also, he came at a cheap price, getting paid the league minimum with no bonus. Perhaps the light will come on with strong coaching.

Young players with potential:

Darryl Morris: He opened eyes on special teams as an undrafted rookie last season. Coaches think he can help on defense, too.

Dax Swanson: He's a practice-squad player who will get a chance to impress in training camp.

Departed:

Tarell Brown: Brown, a starter much of last season, went across the bay to Oakland for a one-year, $3.5 million deal. The 49ers wanted him back, but not at that price. He is solid and must be replaced.

Carlos Rogers: Cut by the 49ers, there's always a chance he could be brought back at a much reduced price. But I think the 49ers would like to move on.


Cox
Still possible:

Perrish Cox: It's telling that Wright was signed before he was. But similar to Rogers' situation, I guess the door can't be completely closed.

Potential future additions:

The remaining free-agent market is not overly enticing. The top players are Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Antonio Cromartie. Others include Champ Bailey and Jabari Greer. Rodgers-Cromartie would be a good fit, but he wants too much money. The good news for the 49ers is the draft is stacked at this position and they could easily find a starting-quality player in the early rounds.

Conclusion:

The 49ers need to add here and they will probably do it through the draft. If they get the right player, they should be fine. Having players like Culliver, Wright and Cook as a rotation player is not a terrible situation. The key will be, whoever is brought on to the team, he must be ready to contribute right away.

Over the last five drafts the 49ers have selected seven defensive backs.

1st Round
Eric Reid (2013) - Stud

3rd Round
Chris Culliver (2011) – Presumed 2014 starter at CB but we should try to upgrade.

6th Round
Trenton Robinson (2012) – Waived and currently buried on the Skins depth chart.

7th Round
Marcus Cooper (2013) – Has some promise. Let go to KC
Curtis Holcom (2011) – Knee injury
Philip Adams (2010) – Lots of promise/too many knee injuries
Curtis Taylor (2009) – Made the roster a couple of times as the 4th or 5th safety.

The lesson here? Spend picks early and often on improving the defensive backfield. We've done pretty well drafting DB's the last two times we've committed a top 100 pick. So far the 49ers off season activity has screamed that they're going rely heavily on the draft to fill-out the secondary depth chart. I hope we go All-In early.


2014 Mock Draft
I'm assuming the worst case for now that our comp pick for Goldson will be a 4th.

We're likely going to spend picks at some point to move up and we've seen Baalke move up in the 1st round twice now. So we trade up a couple spots with #30 our 4th and one of our 7th round picks to jump up ahead a couple spots to start the secondary make-over.

1st (27+/-): Kyle Fuller – CB Virginia Tech
Our corners are good but not great and we should look to upgrade early. With Donatell coaching him up Fuller should be able to push for immediate playing time. He sounds like a very solid kid in the Eric Reid mold . . . and of course he has the long arms.

2nd (56-KC): Donte Moncrief – WR Mississippi
We need to prepare now for a future without Boldin and maybe even Crabtree. Moncreif has great size and skills and he could learn from two of the best possession WR's in the NFL for at least one year.

2nd (61): Deone Buchanon – S Washington State
He's a Norcal kid from Fairfield. 1st team All-American. Many here noticed that Bethea's contract could be easily unplugged with minimal cap damage as early as next year. Buchanon could make it happen sooner rather than later.

3rd (77-TEN): E.J. Gaines – CB Missouri
He's not overly tall, but he's relatively long for his height and physical. First Team All-SEC. I've seen him projected from the 3rd to the early 5th but he seems to be rising fast. He'd be a solid value her adding depth with the potential to push for immediate playing time.

3rd (94): Bruce Ellington – WR South Carolina
We went with the prototype WR earlier. Now we grab an explosive playmaker. With Boldin on board to lead by example I think it would be a great idea to double up and bring in two talented youngsters to learn how to be a Pro from one of the best professionals in the game. If we lose Crabtree to FA next year we'll be in a better position to deal with it. If we keep Crabtree we'll be frigging loaded and Boldin could become expendable next offseason when we're still trying to extend others.

Larsen adds competition behind Kilgore who's not exactly making a ton of money and could be relegated back to heavy tight-end if this kid has the skills and intelligence. Once he's up to speed, he's also adds depth to keep others in their original starting spots in case Kilgore goes down.

I've seen a ton of mocks taking this guy as a red-shirt due to his torn ACL last October and I agree. It was painful to watch the fullback play after Miller went down last year. A back-up FB is a luxury, but Millard has the pass catching ability to be a very good H-Back/TE type as well as the back-up FB – AKA the Swiss Army Knife.

SUMMARY
So I carpet bombed the DB and WR positions on days 1 and 2 and then filled a few depth needs on day 3. Yes we'd be young in the secondary, but I have confidence that Donatell & Company can coach them up. We need to get younger and cheaper in the secondary.

As far was the WR's, yes we've had issues drafting WR's, but again we're facing the prospect of losing Crabtree along with an aging Boldin on a short term contract. We have to be ready to deal with that sooner rather than later. We need to develop at least two reliable targets aside from those guys. Between Patton, Moncrief and Ellington I think we would.

The unfinished business for next year will be re-vamping the DE position a bit. We know Cowboy is close to riding off into the sunset and RayMac isn't getting any younger. But I think we're good this year with Carradine basically coming in as a rookie.
