Early TLJ concept art depicts a scene that would have improved this mess of a film tremendously

It should have been Leia and Ad. Akbar that sacrificed themselves in that ship. The emotional impact would have been much more and it would have been a fitting to her character.

That would have been dope. The idea probably came up and Rian was probably like "hey that makes a lot of sense, let's do the exact opposite of that and bring in Laura Dern for no reason".

Let's be real. Rian wasn't making character decisions on his own. He played the Kathleen Kennedy game and won. By that I mean he got his movie in this trilogy and a follow up of his own. I firmly believe, looking back on his track record, that this film would have been a lot darker, character-fate wise, had he been given full autonomy. But this is Disney we're talking about. I'd wager the original script called for Leia to die in space before Disney said no. That Luke might have met the fate of Obi Wan, but Disney said no. Finn might just have been a martyr in his own right, but no.

We already know Kathleen and Co are notoriously difficult to work for and they've fired directors over the pettiest things.

I legit wonder what Carrie Fisher would have thought about that scene had she been alive :smh:

You do realize Carrie Fisher FILMED that scene right? Asking how she felt about it if she was still alive doesn't make sense, she was there when it happened, something thats even crazier is she probably read it in the script.
She also worked on the script with RJ, as one of her many hats in Hollywood was an uncredited script doctor.
It was widely known that episode 9 was to be HER film, so obviously they were probably BUILDING towards some HUGE Leia moments for 9.
(it's a trilogy)
your trying too hard with the "If she was alive, what would she have thought." line man

If she were alive, she problably would've been smiling and happy(a way I choose to remember her) and said something "this next movie we have something incredible planned for Leia."

That's how I remember her. Every scene with Leia took my breath away and they got me with "May the force ALWAYS be with you."
and the Luke reuniting with her. It's incredible to think(for some people on here) that RJ just went and wrote his own movie when it was within a trilogy and JJ Abrams himself said he was Jealous he wasn't directing this script(when he read it over 2 years ago) meaning he had a head start on ideas for a movie and even though at the time he wasn't directing 9, if you're a filmmaker the wheels NEVER stop turning on ideas especially after a SW film. So we don't know what they had in store for Leia. I mean in this film Luke projected himself on another planet man

Man to insinuate she's spinning in her grave over a scene she read about and then filmed, when you have not even a remote idea how she really felt :smh:

Can you just post a beat sheet of where you would've taken this film.

gonna rewatch the movie tomorrow and once more later this week.
Absolutely loved the film and all the hate this movie is getting is
understandable because it's meant to be a divisive film.

apart from the casino sequences, everything else was flawless.
Rey and Kylo battle scene, Luke and Kylo, Luke and R2 moment,
Leia showing her gangsta force powers, Finn and Poe, Hux was great.
Finn finishing off Phasma was funny as hell.

This. is. Star Wars.

Why do they have to pair up couples, I do like that Finn gets paired up with someone but Rey does not need to be paired up with Poe, that serves no purpose.

Nah brah. That's not how it works. A movie does not intentionally set out to be divisive. You're making excuses for this movie's short comings now.

not when you factor in what the actor had to say
Did you read the whole article? Hamill more or less came around to it, and if he disagreed so much then he could have said no. They weren't replacing him with another actor ever. It was different and a leap in a new direction, doesn't mean they were wrong.

As the day goes on I'm able to revisit TLJ from the perspective of a sober person.

The summation of my opinion of this movie, off of the initial viewing, is "Really bruh?"

Luke Skywalker throws down his weapon, refusing to resort to violence in the face of genocidal tyrants Darth ******* Vader and Emperor Palpatine, but is ready to kill an angsty teenage boy in his sleep over some unpleasant teenager thoughts?

Really son?

Princess Leia arguably has the most incredible display of Force prowess in the damn film franchise, just to have a ridiculous "she's alive!" moment and then do nothing else of note?

Really? Did I really just watch Leia Peter Pan through the vacuum of space like she's a ******* Green Lantern?

Supreme Leader Master of the Force Smoke, alleged Big Bad of the new franchise, just dies like that in the second installment of a trilogy? Really bruh?

THE MAN WHO IS POWERFUL ENOUGH TO CREATE AN INTIMATE TELEPATHIC CONNECTION BETWEEN TWO INDIVIDUALS ACROSS VAST GULFS OF SPACE AND TIME CANNOT SENSE WHEN HIS CHARACTERISTICALLY ANGRY APPRENTICE IS ABOUT TO MURDER HIM? LMFAO

NOW AN EMOTIONALLY UNSTABLE TEEN IN THE BODY OF A 30-SOMETHING MAN IS RULING THE FIRST ORDER AS THE SUPREME VILLAIN OF THE TRILOGY? LMFAOOOOOOO!!!! KYLO REN EARNED THAT ROLE IN THE NARRATIVE RIAN? WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN??!? AWARE ME BRUH!

LUKE SKYWALKER JUST GONE LIKE THAT? YOU KILLED THE PROTAGONIST OF THE FRANCHISE AND DROP THE 10-TON BAG OF "REY IS THE TRUE LAST JEDI" CLICHES ON MY HEAD?

REALLY BRUH? WHEN DID REY BECOME A JEDI?? BECAUSE SHE CAN MOVE ROCKS? DIDNT SHE JUST UNASHAMEDLY ALMOST FALL RIGHT THE **** INTO THE DARK SIDE SIDE WITH NO HESITATION??? SO HOW IS SHE A JEDI??!? AWARE ME BRUH!! WHERE IS JA RULE TO MAKE SENSE OF THIS

POE DAMERON COMMITS A SUCCESSIVE SERIES OF ACTS OF TREASON, EACH ONE WORST THAN THE LAST AND COSTING HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF RESISTANCE LIVES UNTIL THE RESISTANCE IS REDUCED TO A COMMUNITY COLLEGE ELECTIVE CLASSROOM???

BUT POE DAMERON STILL IN CHARGE DOE!! WE ARE DA SPARK DAT WILL LIGHT DA FIRE DAT WILL LIGHT DA BLUNT OF WHATEVER DA HELL RIAN JOHNSON WAS SMOKING WHEN HE WROTE THIS **** MY *****!!

Really? Finn/Rose subplot not only goes nowhere and create unpleasant evocations of The Phantom Menace, but is literally the CAUSE OF THE BETRAYAL AND DESTRUCTION OF THE RESISTANCE!!?? REALLY?

THIS MOVIE WAS DUMB AS ****

The people leaving the showing before mine look so dissapointed lol

I noticed the little kids LOVED it tho

That side mission to the casino was so useless. if purple lady had told everyone what the plan was, there would been no reason to go. Lol. Hell, that plan might have been able to work much better if she told everyone.

Um...yeah why the uncanny valley cgi Leia face while she was in space and floating back if she was alive to film that scene? Pretty sure the script was slightly modified after she passed away. Granted I believe she was still suppose to be in a coma from what I’ve read but the circumstances were different. I’m of the mindset was that the Mary Poppins scene was shoehorned as a way to “honor” Carrie Fisher by finally showing her as proficient in the Force since it would be the last film she starred in. As for my beat sheet of where I would have taken the film I have plenty of ideas but just a couple of top

- Luke’s exile would have involved Kylo’s fall and the loss of an immediate family. A wife and child dying because he was so consumed with restoring the Jedi and a nephew who took his uncle and his families purpose to heart and went down the wrong path.

- Snoke would have predicted that Kylo was turning the saber on him and smiled when he saw the saber through him. He would have truly succeeded and fully turning Ben to the dark side.

- Leia would have walked out on Crait and confront Ben in front of the walkers and everyone. They would have talked about Han, Leia would get emotional pleading for Kylo to come to his senses and Kylo would be ready to strike down his mother and the leader of the resistance in front of everyone.

-Luke would have appeared at the moment before Kylo strikes down Leia and Kylo would have turned his attention to him. Luke would have bent the and destroyed the legs of all the walkers with the Force and would have spanked Kylo in front of everyone. Kylo would start spazzing. Luke would allow himself to get stricken down like Obi Wan but not before telling Ben that he “theoretically” died a long time ago when he failed him and lost his family but his faith has been restored with the arrival of Rey (who he has a feeling may be his daughter that the force returned to him somehow.) The Force showed him that Ben can never fully be dark and inevitably turn to the light and that this very moment would be the catalyst. Kylo strikes him down and he leaves behind his clothes like Obi Wan and Kylo is more angry than ever because Luke allowed himself to be defeated Kylo still couldn’t stand up to him. Kylo wants desperately now to prove how deep his allegiance to the dark can be.

- The resistance flies off broken but still hopeful. Leia looks at Rey and then sees a Luke as a Force Ghost and briefly mentions how she’s so much like him and how Leia will make sure that she makes her father proud.

I just gave you the same film but modified a few things. I clearly would take out the force FaceTime, have Luke more protective of Rey on the island and not wanting to train her because he doesn’t want her on the Jedi path. Give me a year and Disney’s budget and would have made the real chapter 8 in the “Skywalker saga”

leap in a new direction
leap in a new direction
leap in a new direction

we get it.

this isnt some grand idea or anything
it happens all the time

this is more than a leap
this is more than simple character evolution after a period of time

the **** was extra sloppy

Maybe I'm just more forgiving. I ain't mad if people have different opinions, I'm just going along for the ride and choosing if I like it or not. I liked it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My episode 8 script would have gave something simple and meaningful......like Princess Leia actually having a scene with her son :smh:

On second viewing, I like the movie much more.

What makes me mad though is the constant misdirection without payoff. Since Rey wasn’t connected to anybody I wish Boyega was the force sensitive one.

We all know THAT was NEVER happening though.

and then because Carrie Fisher is still alive and you turn in the script over 2 years ago Bob Iger tells you they want that moved to episode 9, as Luke will be the focal point as well as his relationship with Kylo

And then I get fired like Lord & Miller for not getting my way and let Ron Howard take over

No doubt. I think most people are ok with the dismantling of the Jedi Order as we knew it to usher in a new wave of Force-Sensitive folk to tell their story. Execution though really leaves a lot to be desired and there are too many questionable choices regarding plot and character development.

Like i can understand killing Snoke if you want to set up Kylo Ren as THEE villain of the movie...but nothing in 2/3 movies garners my respect for him as this series' bad guy. He's brash, too emotional, short-sighted, and flat out is reminiscent of Anakin and his angst. I felt that complexity would come if we could get MORE background on his upbringing under Luke's tutelage, his happy life as an apprentice leading UP to Luke's apparent meltdown (this is a whole diff convo!).

Sorry to throw you all my thoughts lol was just thinking and typing at the same time. I guess we have to wait till IX to see how this wraps up. Who knows, maybe this whole movie is a freakin ruse.

I thought Luke showing off his Jedi mastery was so cool. He obviously made a lot of mistakes, but if you think about it: those mistakes originated from the Jedi order. The elitism, the exclusivity, the egos, the Jedi order was not perfect and kept producing powerful, dark characters like Vader, Kylo Ren, etc.

I thought this movie really brought a lot of things to the forefront for SW fans: Luke wasn't perfect, Leia wasn't perfect, Han wasn't perfect, and thus, every single character in the SW was also flawed. People are up in arms that each of these movies are ultimately revealing their characters' flaws. TLJ was about redemption or at least, the possibility that you could be redeemed, if you wanted to be saved. - This tone was not present in other SW movies, so that jarring effect has a lot of people upset about this latest movie.

The Reylo fight scene was symbolic. Did you see how many times they caught glances at each other? When was the last time you saw ENEMIES care about each other? To me, that red room fight was the bond that Rey and Kylo couldn't ignore, it was truly bigger than them. At the end, when Finn was digging through the drawer to get Rose a blanket, did anyone see the Jedi text books? I hella jumped when I saw those because I knew that it meant that Yoda was not BS-ing Luke when he said Rey got all she needed.

I'm stoked that they took such leaps to tell SW in such a crazy light. No more recycled plots or characters, just letting it all burn down. :emoji_fire:
