which of these exercises would work out his core?
Pull ups.
Lol actually most of the lifts he listed (if not all) do some work for the core.

squat, deadlifts, pullups, cleans definietly hit the core (abswise). maybe not so much bench (someone correct me if i'm wrong)

this is what i was gonna say.......bench too just not as much, i mean for a lot of lifts you're stabilizing yourself with your core, benchincluded. but with dl's, squats, cleans etc. your core gets worked a lot.

and yeah i'd like cliffs on the book too...

Just a general question to all who participate in this thread:

How many excercises (range) do you guys perform on a regular gym day? For me since I can only hit up the gym 2x a week and I do abs/cardio on days I dont go tothe gym while at home, I do about 15 excercises each of those days. Am I overdoing it?

if i could only go twice a week i'd do the same......not sure if it's the right decision or not, but i'd feel like a bum if i couldonly go twice a week and i only did like 4 things while i was there.

assuming those days are not back-to-back or anything i don't think you're "overtraining" or anything like that.

Nope, not overtraining Joe atleast I don't think so. I'd like someone to critique my routine every week, just keeping in mind that I can only go to thegym 2x a week

Monday - HIIT in the morning followed by 45 min stretching session
Tuesday - Chest, Quads, Biceps, Traps, Calves
Wendsday- Ab routine
Thursday - Back, Hams, Lats, Shoulders, Triceps
Friday - Either HIIT/heavy bag work during the day and abs in the night

Sat or Sun if I feel in the mood I do a body weight strength training workout.

I did the BBB workout for about 6 months last year with the 4 day a week program. I was trying to bulk up at that time and I only gained a couple lb's. Itdidn't seem like I gained any mass from it, but I gained strength and got really cut. The problem was most likely because of my diet. I'm thinkingabout trying it out again since my diet is way better now...

Also, all the juice heads on t-nation for some reason loves this workout...

I see an older bodybuilder at my schools gym and this guy does DB bench presses with his legs semi in the air on a bench. With the weight he waspushing that took some serious focus and stability.

I probably need to change gyms, but Ive seen vids and things on deadlifts with dumbells. Do these actually work? Are they that much worse then without a bar?

5th day of the diet is pretty much behind and so far so good. My calorie goal is 1585 according to MyPlate. To be honest I'm not sure if I could pull thisoff without going to gym or doing cardio. Those extra calories make this possible IMO.

You keep the bar hugging the front of your body the whole time, with large dumbells, its a bit difficult.

grip's an issue as well, as are the dumbbells' weights.......i've never seen db's past 200 lbs, and that isn't enough for alot of people for dl's.

Yo, JOE...

I just picked up some Ortho Core. It says take up to six capsules a day, so how should I go about doing this?

Yeah they all do. IMO though, none of them hit the abs as hard as pull ups.

2 at a time 3x a day with food is what i do... ...a lotta people half-dose it to save $$ though, you could do that too, 1 cap a day 3x a day.

Anybody?

i would get a bench that can incline, a power/squat rack/cage, a bar if it's not included, a bunch of 45's, 25's, 35's, 10's, 5's,2.5's, and a set of dumbbells that goes from 10 or 15 lb. up to at least 150.

i would also get an olympic platform and some bumper plates but that's probably not necessary for most people.

not really sure about brands or anything, i've always used the werk san ones, these exact ones (competition bumper plates):

http://www.werksanusa.com/products.asp?dept=10

and i can't find anything wrong with them, they're awesome. not sure if there's better or what but i would def recommend these if you are gonna buysome.

I bought a weight set from wal -mart it was alright I don't use it any more...........

but they sell some really nice 45LB weights at wal-mart not sure about a bar maybe they have one their or your local athletic store.

Not sure where you can get a bench from but...I'd look into making one ur self since u can basically make it a two in one type of thing and have asquatting/benching height thing like a smith machine

There is no need for you to do 15 exercises per workout if you can only workout 2x a week at the gym.

Doing compound lifts are most beneficial for everyone. If you want to get stronger, faster, leaner, more bulky, compound lifts are the way to go.

If I were you, I'd do something like this. Feel free to switch it up but here's a list of exercises so that you get the idea...

Day 1: bench press, squats, barbell rows, and then throw in some additional exercises like dips or incline bench press or dumbell presses...lunges or legpress...lat pulldowns or cable rows.

On day 1 you've just worked out quads, chest, back, lower back, abs, biceps and triceps with only a handful of exercises

Day 2: standing military press, deadlifts, pull ups, and then throw in an additional hamstring exercise like hamstring curls, and do additional shoulderexercises.

These exercises will work out your shoulders, upper back, lower back, hamstrings, biceps, abs.

You can still get great results by going to the gym only twice a week. Just focus more on compound lifts rather than isolation exercises which are timeconsuming and likely wont get you the results you desire. Also remember that going to the gym only twice a week is better than not going at all.

I found this video to be pretty useful

thanks for the vid dr. shoes
quite useful

would i see better results with the 5 compound workouts 3-4 times a week than a 5 day split of isolation excercises?

Absolutely.

good looks, I've been doing isolation excercises for the past year 2-5times a week for 2-3 hours while bulking up from 160 (5'7 skinny filipino if thatmatters) the results weren't as great as I thought, I am now 180 but I have a mean gut now
eyes.gif
neglecting my legs and abs, looking to lose that and gain more muscle mass.

how does this split look

Sunday: Squat 3x6-8 | Deadlift 3x6-10 | Bench 3x6-8 | Power Cleans 3x6-10 | Pull-Ups 3x10-12 | Military/Shoulder Press 3x6-10 | Cardio 20mins

Monday: Abs | HIIT

Tuesday: Squat 3x6-8 | Deadlift 3x6-10 | Bench 3x6-8 | Power Cleans 3x6-10 | Pull-Ups 3x10-12 | Barbell Rows 3x6-10 | Cardio 20mins

Wednesday: Abs | HIIT

Thursday: Squat 3x6-8 | Deadlift 3x6-10 | Bench 3x6-8 | Power Cleans 3x6-10 | Pull-Ups 3x10-12 | Military/Shoulder Press 3x6-10 | Cardio 20mins

Friday or Saturday: Abs | HIIT

MenaceI2, those exercises are great but you will NOT be able to get through an entire workout doing all those exercises in one session. I've tried itbefore and your brain just gets really fatigued and you lose focus. Also, your body will be extremely sore after 2-3 of those exercises...guaranteed. Even ifyou manage to get through that workout, you wont recover in time to be near 100% after only 1 day's rest.

You are going to have to split those exercises up.

Maybe bench and squat on day 1.

Deadlifts and rows on day 2.

Pull-ups and power cleans on day 3.

If you want to do those exercises multiple times a week, it'll be much more manageable. However, you may have to add one more lifting session a week.

Day 1: Upper body....bench, military press, pull-ups, barbell rows
Day 2: Lower body....squats, deadlifts OR power cleans, lunges
Day 3: No lifting
Day 4: Upper body
Day 5: Lower body
Day 6: no lifting
Day 7: no lifting

Now this won't be substitute for me hitting the regular gym but this is for the days I'm feeling a little unmotivated/lazy to make that drive to thegym. It's a lot easier to walk down stairs, you know? Thoughts?
