STAY/GET BACK IN SHAPE VOL 3.0 -- A New Niketalk = A New Thread

Right now I'm just using a room in our basement, but I already have a treadmill, power rack, bench, olympic set and curling bar down there. In a few months I'm moving out and everything but the treadmill will be moved into a garage.
Budget is around 400. I'd rather have an adjustable set instead of the hex dumbbells too

$400, that's pretty solid. Still, I would advise against these mega dumbells, heavy buyers remorse down the road.

You seem to have a solid set up, what type of plates are you working with?

Get a set of 30's, 40's and 50's and some kettlebells with that money.

But what if he's stronger than that? My only buyer's remorse is having outgrown the 1090s in a lot of unilateral movements so I went and bought a barbell set. Anything adjustable and heavier than 90lbs was outrageously expensive though.

what specific goals do you have that you need dumbells for that you can't achieve with what you have?

The only dumbbells I have now are 2 20 lb and 2 10 lb hex dumbbells. I would like to incorporate more exercises like flys, tricep extensions, and lat raises with the dumbbells in my routine. Right now I'm just using what I have and it's good enough but I'm getting stronger and want to add more weight but don't want to have a bunch of dumbbells.

A cheapo set I got from Academy Sports. Later down the road I'm going to get a more quality bar and plates. What do you mean by mega dumbbells? Is that the same as the adjustable ones I asked about?

How heavy do you plan on going with fly's and lat raises? Also, tricep extensions are useless, especially if you have a power rack. Hit some dips, you're better off.

He has a barbell set already, $400 is a lot to spend on a cumbersome set of adjustable dumbells.

Let's be real, the only legitimate reason he'll need 60+lb dumbells is to bench. $400 to bench dumbells? Don't think that's the best use of resources.

Your call, you already have a set of 10's and a set of 20's.

If I was in your shoes I would scoop the set of 30's ($80), set of 40's ($100) and a set of 50's ($130) and a couple of kettlebells 35 ($45), 55 ($75). $30 over your budget, but I can get a lot of use out of that equipment as opposed to those blocks.

That's just me though.

I need to find a better time to go to the gym. Way to busy after work, had to wait to use weights, and two dudes got in a fight because one was blocking the other's view in mirror. Smh.

Do most of you guys go right after work or early in the AM?
early am but I work 3rd shift

off days I usually go b/t 10-12pm

They aren't cumbersome, particularly not moreso than a 45lb 7ft bar. I don't know how strong he is but I'd bet he could bent over lat row 60+, should press, dynamic variations of some common exercises like lunges are far less cumbersome with dbs and require less space, if you have a box/bench you can get into some step ups, Bulgarians, kb swings (since it'll be same thing as 1), but I don't know his pockets either.

If he already has Olympic plates why not just buy adjustable db handles with the spin lock collars? Am I missing something? May need a few more 25lb plates if you don't have enough but this would cost a small fraction of the 400 you have available.

The adjustable take less time while switching out. But Iron Man has a point. I might get a couple more hex dumbbells instead of the adjustable, The adjustable ones take up less space too. I'll just have to see how much space is left after I set everything up in the garage when I move

See I don't get this reasoning...in your previous post, you were talking about set of $400 adjustable db's being used for only bench pressing.

But this setup you suggested wouldn't even allow homey to db press at all. Other than kettlebell swings, what can those weights of kettlebell be used for?

I would cop this:

http://www.powerblock.com/prod_homeuse_u90stage1.php ($440 shipped, or less if you find it in store)

You'll progress beyond 5-45 lbs faster than you think.

The blocks only go up to 45lb, he'll have 50lb dumbells to DB press.

-Kettlebell Russian Swing
-Kettlebell American Swing
-Kettlebell single arm swing
-Kettlebell Snatch
-Kettlebell single arm clean and jerk
-Iron Cross/Hold
-High Pull
-Single arm extensions
-Kettlebell squat and press
-Turkish Get-up
-Russian Twist
-Renegade Row (Push up position, row)

Considering that he already has a barbell, flat bench, a set of 10's and 20's, the other package will be more versatile.

You can do all that with adjustable dumbbells, plus how much space is all of that going to take up while not offering any cost benefit, in fact being more expensive and limiting his growth to 60lbs? I sit mine on top of a plyo box

Different goals, different folks. I think kettlebells are more essential. Dumbells work =/= kettlebell work.

I wouldn't want a treadmill or that elliptical machine taking up space, when a rower provides a better full body/calorie burning experience.

He seems to have a solid foundation for his set up right now.

hey guys, i am looking to put on weight (15-20 lbs) in the next few months and looking for insight on what protein powders are recommended for post work outs. I haven't exercised in about 2 years and really trying to get back into lifting and bulking up a little (i am underweight at the moment). any insight is appreciated
