Not. Small. Market.

Ehh idk.  How's basketball's popularity over there?

The way I see it, it'd be like a Rugby team based in NYC.  That'd be a small market team.

Stern is on now.System makes no sense for the owners. The owners gave the union the reports of all the teams tax returns and other things like that and they offered to have the unions accountants to take a lot at the reports and they declined.4.3 billion that needs to be divided, but he expects the number to go up. 4% a year increases is what they're working at.It makes him very concerned that the lockout affects people even outside the NBA.Owners want to correct the system. The union has been in transistion. They haven't been talking about the BRI as it seems like they feel they can get a deal done with the BRI.They want to make every team competitive. They haven't even addressed all the issues. With all those crazy contracts in the NBA, they still fell short of the 57% and still had to give a check to the union.Much more robust revenue sharing.Every team should have the same amount of money available. Union said no.Brought up flex cap and union said no, it's a blood issue. The team that won the championship was over the luxury tax and the team they beat will soon be over the luxury tax.Owners have a revenue sharing plan that the owners can do by themselves, but they will show the players.Competitiveness is a big issue.Francesa brought up a point that the Knicks haven't been good despite spending a lot of money. Stern then said the Knicks have gotten much better lately. If a GM has more money to spend they'll have a better chance to win.Owners want to eliminate bird exemption. They are at a soft cap. That's done.Players said the want the ability to have guaranteed contracts. They want every contract this in place not to be rolled back and the owners said ok.Stern thinks that if they make the deal, each team and players can decide how many guaranteed contracts are allowed per team.Player who is not performing can be waived and be paid in double the amount of years of his contract.Stern was upset when Billy said the 50-50 split was not offered to him. Players brought up the 50-50 split weeks before by the players, but not a formal offer. Then a few weeks ago, Fisher and the lead negotiator came in and went to Stern and Adam Silver and Peter Holt and all of them agreed they would go back to respective rooms to try and sell the 50-50 split. Owners were meeting and Fisher came back and said they can't do it. They can't sell it. Billy Hunter did not come into room to say they rejected it. It was a union initiated proposal.Luxury tax- Owners proposed a punitive tax so they could limit the number of teams that could pay it.1.75 for a dollar for 1st 5 million. Then they add 50 cents and they would keep moving up. They would like teams to drop out of the tax out of a certain number of years and players said no as that's just like a hard cap. Stern kept saying a flex cap and everything that's been offered, the players say would work just like a hard cap. Luxury tax is a big stumbling block. Revenue sharing is business side and competitiveness side is to keep the teams out of the tax to the best of their ability. That's what the owners want. Owners want to make the tax much more strict.Contract length is big deal. Owners want 4 and 3 with one 5 year contract per team.Tuesday is a big day. Stern hopes mediator can help get a deal done.If they don't get a deal done by Wednesday, he's worried. Offers will start to get worse and a season could slip away.If they don't get a deal done by the time the owners meet, more games will start to be missed.1 month is about the time it would take to get the season going after a deal is done.Owners do not want to cancel the season. Says the owners have made concessions, they don't want to miss a season.Asked if there's a divide in owners, he said no. Big market teams who have to pay a lot of money from revenue sharing are all on board. They all believe the league should be more competitive. Both big and small market teams are on board.Owners proposed 10 year deal. Union proposed 6 years. Owners said they would have out after 7. Union wanted outs after 6 and 8 years. He wants both sides to explain their sides to mediator as it might help everyone understand and help bring a reality check.Hardest things to agree on are Length of contracts and ability to keep teams from using tax to get betterTuesday right before owners come into town is the time to make a deal. Sterns gut is if they don't get a deal done by Tuesday, no basketball on Christmas. That's his gut.Mike says luxury tax is big issue. He thinks the owners don't want some teams to use tax to their advantage. This is a recap from a real gm member. Stern was on in new York.

Sry it's all one giant paragraph. Having a problem copy and paste on my iPad

But there is a lot of interesting info in there. To me it sounds like they want the tax to be so bad that nobody could pay it. They do this under the disguise of competitive balance.

I was going to mention the old Blazers, but I would leave Pip and Kemp out, they were older back then.

Even this current Blazer team can almost match that Dallas team.  Roy, LMA, Oden, Batum, Felton.  (with no injuries of course) is just the same 50+ wins, out in the first round, same as that mighty Dallas team.

What about Deron, Boozer, Milsap, Okur, AK 47?

Boy, those small market teams will never have it good like that Dallas squad had it.

Come on man, that's almost every small team in the league, minus the Spurs, the one that actually wins, and beat Dallas all the time back then.

Ok, so why is Tuesday soooooooo important, in mid October, that if no deal is signed, no games 8 weeks later?

No way Toronto is a small market... Granted basketball isn't the go to sport there, but when that's the league's only team in the country, you know the basketball fans will show support. Plus, every game always seems like the fans come out. Tough to point the finger now, since after last offseason, but when things were going decent for Toronto, their games were packed.

look at the hawks. they've made some great moves and some not so great moves

al horford (draft)
josh smith (draft)
jeff teague (draft)
jamal crawford (FA)
hinrich (trade)
joe johnson (FA)

they'll probably be the 3rd best team in the east.

they're paying joe johnson almost twice what he's worth and they passed on chris paul in the draft. two moves that make you ask "what if?"

it all comes down to management

If Gilbert and Sarver are able to have their way, and split up the Heat. That would be terrible for basketball.

Zach Randolph was so good he played for the Blazers and Michigan State at the same time? Impressive.

Randolph was a non-factor until a few years into his career anyway, and by then the Blazers were on their way to the bottom.
