One has the right to self identify as whatever they please but your self-identity may not be acknowledged by others in society. For example, a black dude can self-identify as white but he'll most likely be seen as a black dude by others. His self-identity will only be important to that individual because in american society we base people's race on skin color and facial features. David Ortiz can self-identify as Dominican but that doesn't mean that the white lady on the train won't assume he's black. I can put on a dress and self-identify as a woman, but me wearing a dress and dressing like a woman doesn't mean others will see me as a woman.
