Second Major Coal Company Declares Bankruptcy During Trump Presidency

Da energy density though...

Westmoreland Coal Company, one of the oldest mining companies in the country, became the second major coal bankruptcy of the Trump presidency Tuesday when the company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a Texas court.

The company, which has a substantial presence in the Ohio Valley, has for years faced mounting difficulties as it continued to take on debt while many of the power plants that used its coal announced they intend to close or switch to cleaner fuels.

You know what’s hilariously ironic? Conservatives can twist themselves into a knot to see how breathing wrong may possibly infringe on the second amendment, but can’t seem to comprehend why unneccesary voter ID laws and voter suppression impacting voter turnout is a problem.
they just don't care and choose not to even try and comprehend

Higher turnout is more likely to be advantageous for Democrats so the lower the turnout, the better. Especially if you can selectively target specific groups through voter suppression efforts.

Without a doubt. Especially in states like North Carolina for example which is on the brink of flipping. If it wasn’t for gerrymandering that is a blue state. Hopefully soon it will be.

The Waller County, Texas stuff is especially egregious. The Maddow segment is a nice summary for people who aren't aware of the history there. These people have straight up defied federal court orders multiple times. They appealed their case all the way up the Supreme Court, who unequivocally sided with the students. Still pulling the same old bull**** - THE COUNTY gave them two addresses to register and is trying to say one is another district, yadda yadda. 2013 was the first time students could actually vote around campus.

Before that they had moved the closest polling station 30 MILES away.

But it's totally not discriminatory or anything. Nonsensical.

Our municipal elections are happening tomorrow here.
Mandatory voting duty once you're 18 so we're forced to go vote either way.
I feel like there has definitely been more interest in politics here, at least on the local level.
In the previous municipal elections, roughly 500k people out of our ~11m population abstained or turned in a blank vote so we'll see how that number has evolved.

I hope tomorrow we can finally get our mayor all the way the **** out of his 18 year long tenure. He hasn't been all bad tbh but there's been a lot of nepotism.

He's been the mayor for almost my whole life in large part because he is part of a 'cabal' (not sure if that's the right word, a cooperation agreement between 2 or more parties to run for election and govern together as one party) and the other parties didn't unite. Thus the votes were split and the other parties were never able to gain enough of a foothold to break the mayor's supermajority.

What's different now however is that the conservatives have joined with the christian democrats and a few independents.
In the previous election I voted for the conservatives who did end up getting the second most votes but the mayor's party retained its supermajority due to the split votes.

Now that the second and third biggest parties have formed into one party I think we have a good shot at winning.

Kushner Likely Paid No Federal Income Taxes for Years, Documents Show
Confidential documents reviewed by The Times indicate that Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, probably paid little or no income tax from 2009 to 2016.

Over the past decade, Jared Kushner’s family company has spent billions of dollars buying real estate. His personal stock investments have soared. His net worth has quintupled to almost $324 million.

And yet, for several years running, Mr. Kushner — President Trump’s son-in-law and a senior White House adviser — appears to have paid almost no federal income taxes, according to confidential financial documents reviewed by The New York Times.

His low tax bills are the result of a common tax-minimizing maneuver that, year after year, generated millions of dollars in losses for Mr. Kushner, according to the documents. But the losses were only on paper — Mr. Kushner and his company did not appear to actually lose any money. The losses were driven by depreciation, a tax benefit that lets real estate investors deduct a portion of the cost of their buildings from their taxable income every year.
