I majored in mechanical engineering...now i am a Reliability Engineer for a salt mine...

this dude speaks truth, i'm a mech eng too at an oil storgae terminal, and the older guys above me give me all the trivial projects to insure that i dont shine, but they timing coming, in 5 years their gonna be forced to retire so i jus take it.

I work in building maintence. I make better money than you thinkand have great benefits. . I am a floater, so ive been to lots of buildings in nyc. none of them have a recycling program.. at all. sure we give you blue recycle bins but it just end up with the rest off the trash at night. we do or jobs wel... in corporate buildings feel free to use the bathrooms, usually theyre clean.... DONT EAT THE FOOD FROM GRAND CENTRAL STATION. ESPECIALLY JUNIORS AND THE DOWNSTAIRS RESTAURANTS. rats own that building and bums sublet. we are told by or supervisors to change the toilettissue when it reaches the half way mark. so thousands of perfectly good rolls are thrown out daily. a damn shame. also dont even think of getting a job with a clean company. you'll only be allowed to work 3 months .. unless you know someone AND you got like 5 grand cash dont even apply...this industry is definitely mafia operated but not who you think..

The Top 2% of Voice Talents make anywhere from 2 to 5 grand per session, and a session is anywhere from 5 to 25 min long.

Most of them do 5 to 8 sessions a day.

Add that one up.

You not only need hits to Ras and p53 or other cell cycle controlling genes, but the cancer cell needs activated telomerase, non-responsiveness to apoptosis, non-functioning Rb, angiogenesis, no contact inhibition, etc... Stabilizing the cell cycle is a large help, but not the only factor that can attribute to tumor formation.

Plus I was saying what kind of drug you going to take to "stabilize" the cell cycle when many many many different cells in your body have slow growth while others have rapid growth? Stabilizing all of them would cause rapidly growing cells to slow down and you would have many problems.

Get it? Or am I missing something? Your comments are welcomed so keep em coming. Its thoughts like that, that keep me and many others trying to find a miracle cure.
This is exactly what i'm suggesting, finding drugs that specifically "prevent mutations" in oncogenes and proto-oncogenes. I still think this can be a possibility in the future. I didn't mean stabilize, like stop...but stabilize like keep it functional.
One can only hope. *crosses fingers*

....this is why i HATE time warner!

from when i worked in stock at a popular childrens clothing store:

-most stock managers steal the clothes and sell 'em/give 'em to their friends with kids/baby mommas in the hood, in the right hood...you can make a killing

-99% of the people who bring their carriages with them in the store are stealing absurd amounts of clothes(usually while their kids are running around breaking $#!t and making a mess to distract the employees)

-infants clothes are the least stolen items, meanwhile they are the easiest

-parents will have their kids steal clothes in the fitting rooms by wearing them under the clothes they have on

-don't worry about the security alarm, if it goes off....they won't stop you if ur halfway out the door

-if they don't see you steal the item, they can't confront you in the store and definitely not outside the store

-the security employees don't work for the company directly(at least that's how it was when i was there)

-you can get a discount on anything in the store just by complaining to the manager  when the store is really busy, they don't care nor will hassle themselves to check anything you say

-80% of the female workers(especially managers) are $lut$ that either: a) have kids b) are expecting kids c) have a close friend/family with kids....and are only there for the discounts/"free" stuff

-if they tell u a certain size is sold out, it's a lie....guaranteed there is at least 5 size runs of whatever "non-sale" item u wanted in the stock room

-the amount of "damaged" clothes (missing buttons, frayed stitches, etc) that get thrown away is astounding

Considering most technical fields, including engineering, are constructed of international students, you should not be surprised.

English is very rarely their first language.

Ah i am an African American from Denver, CO...At my college they dont put any emphasis on writing principals. Its all about the technical, and engineering aspect. Has nothing to do with international, its about the curriculum

I went to High School in Fort Collins. CSU, CU, Colorado College, and Northern Colorado are all liberal arts heavy. If you're in Colorado and an engineer you're at the School of Mines.

While I'm at it here's some industry info:

-Developers from all facets programmers, map designers, scenario designers, artists, all work insanely hard to get our products out by release date. From original concept to release the game will be drastically different. The game development process is an iterative process. No one's original vision is ever fully realized.
-The biggest drawback on games today is the corporate stranglehold studio's have to bend to. If our main investor comes in and doesn't think he can make $$$ off the game the whole project can be completely shut down.
-Once game's get into alpha the game is pretty much done.
-12-14 hour days for extended periods of time are the norm during "crunch time". This includes everyone from marketing to QA.
-You may work for weeks programming/debugging/implementing a toolset for a scenario that gets cut because the lead designer or director doesn't feel they want/need it. If anyone is looking to go into this field you need to accept that your work can be thrown out at any time.
-Going to a 2 year tech school will most likely get you laughed at when applying for a position in the game's industry.
-A full time QA Tester (non temp) can easy make 65,000 a year. Contracted QA Tester makes about $10-$12 an hr. Full time QA testers get hired after about 5-6 years...
-As much as people would tell you playing games for a living is great anyone who ever did QA will tell you different. A lot of devs think of QA is a bunch of monkeys and I personally despise most of them.
laugh.gif

-When you encounter a bug in a game most people tend to blame QA. Fact is 95% of the time they reported the bug and I "WNFed" it. (Will not fix) You can't fix everything and you have to prioritize where your effort goes
-At least 80% of entry level programmers burn out and leave the games industry. You have to really love and believe in what you're working on to succeed.
-It's possible to make more than your salary in bonuses by meeting deadline, performance, industry award, and sales milestones.

haha I always thought you worked for Square Enix.

I'd love to be doing what you're doing with programming, the area I live in is mainly just NASA and various defense contractors.

i know some customers go overboard sometimes but i notice some of yall just have stank attitudes for no reason, you need to fall back a little and remember that a business needs it customers in order to make money, and then yall wonder why you gonna be folding shirts and serving happy meals your whole life. SMDH

Yo Wells Fargo dude, I've been wondering this for a while: Do banks go out of their way to hire good-looking females as bank tellers?

- They say that we can't really argue with the customers or kickthem out, but if it's clear that you're just trying to be aproblem...you're fair game.
When I worked at the grocery store and at the shoe store, I really regret not blowing up towards at least 4-5 customers and their ridiculous behavior... I really think my managers would have had my back.

--Its not my current job but I used to be a swing manager for Mcdonalds...
--300 beef patties only costs the store like $18. These are the ones used in the Big Mac.
--100 nuggets only cost about $11-$14. So they make their money back in like 1 and half 10-piece value meals.

--This was a long time ago. Prices may have changed since then.

dog washer: (worse job of my entire life)
really just make sure you know and trust your groomer. i just washed and dried the dogs, but the actual groomers were just sick !$$+#. i would say most dogs hate the groomer and rarely just chill out, and the place i worked the groomers would instigate the dog further. low key cruel...many moments where i really felt bad for the animal. i would usually hope the dog bit the groomer.

being a d-1 athlete:
you sign that letter of intent...they own your life. if its within NCAA rules, they can make you do just about anything, no matter the time of day. luckily i had a great coaching staff, but i have friends whos coach has dangled scholarships over their heads, been shady, promised money and screwed em.
someone said it earlier, we shouldn't be paid. i worked my ++$ off for a 48,000 scholarship plus lots of food and special treatment. i'm happy with a free education.

parents, make sure your kid actually wants to be there, cuz if not theyre a pain in the ++$ and youre wasting at least 3 grand
athleticism goes a long way. being 6'3' and a blob does not equal a scholarship.
if you are a pain in my ++$ in any way and a recruiter approaches me about you, i'm telling them how damn needy you are as well as any character flaws i believe you have.

-Everyone is only there to do it to look good on college applications.

Engineering
-It's a very relaxed environment, very chill job.
-As long as you get your work done, you can do whatever you want.

Considering about half of the incoming students don't speak English as a first language, I would say it has MORE than nothing to do it.

Sure, the curriculum doesn't emphasize the importance of proper grammar, but I'm sure the person who went through grade school in
America knows how to write better than the person who came from Malaysia.

It may not sound like it, but I'm agreeing with you.

Alot of the sunglasses in the P.Y.Sunglasses thread are owned/licensed/made by the same few manufacturers.  Oakley, Paul Smith, Oliver Peoples, Ray Ban, Prada, Burberry, Polo, Chanel, etc are made by Luxottica. Gucci, Dior, Armani, YSL, etc are made by Safilo. So your Gucci's are being made in the same factory as some of the "lower" brands.  In terms of eyeglass lenses, standard lenses sometimes cost less than $1 to make.

Keep this thread going, there's alot of stuff I never knew!

Textbook publishing
State school boards and textbook companies are in bed together from way back.  I was on a conference call once where we learned that New York had voted to adopt our high school textbook...that we were still writing.  We used to create multiple editions for different states/regions that looked the same but had different ISBNs.  For instance, Texas wanted no mention of anything having to do with evolution and New York/Virginia were at the other end of the spectrum.

Major universities
You can stick those student evaluation forms up your #!!.  If the professor has grants/funding, he or she is moving up.
I take the TA's word on just about everything when it comes to dealing with you/your grade appeal/your dead grandmother/whatever.
Contrary to popular legend, I have never ever EVER heard of a professor getting with an undergraduate.  That's what TA's do.  Now, getting with a graduate student...that happens occasionally.  (And everyone loses - especially the student.)

Medical school/Graduate school
Provided you come from a good school, your admission hinges on three things: grades, test scores, and LORs.  If anything else on your application comes into play then you are really on the last rung.
Med students have to know an incredible amount of information at a very superficial level.  Graduate students have to know everything known to man about one specific subject/project.  Both groups think they are the smartest people alive and believe the other group is stupid.

Specialty running stores
If you want something and they don't have your size or even carry the model you're looking for but they have a contract with that company, chances are they will order it for you free of charge and call you when it's in.  When was the last time someone at Footlocker did that for you?
