The Official NBA Season Thread: Sunscreen and GOAT Talk

2009 is the best lebron and i watched lebrons entire career. 2018 is a close 2nd. Heat Lebron has championship bias, but that wasnt the best lebron imo

However those teams that MJ played in the 80's aint nothing compared to today. Lets be real. And I watch Jordan highlights on the regular. But in this era, a 6'6 SG thats only 200 lbs and cant shoot the three isnt dominating like how he did back then. There were no KD's back then, there was no PG's. Michael Jordan was THE FREAK for like his first 4-5 seasons. He just happened to also be fundamentally sound.

In 09 Bron put up 38.5 ppg 8.3 rpg 8.0 apg in the ECF
lebrons points in the series: 49 , 35 , 41, 44 , 37 , 25.
NOBODY is touching that today. Plus he could run like a deer and never get tired. Only player better than this is probably 88-89 MJ. From a ability standpoint.

It’s the other way around actually

MJ Career resume is better
Bron is the better player
Are we basing this on stats or accolades?
You dared MJ to shoot outside of 18 feet just like you do with Bron. But now Bron is a great shooter from 3 because you have to in modern basketball
This isn’t a fair comparison. No one was really shooting threes back then besides specialists and Larry Bird/Reggie Miller. The game has evolved into it. Props have to be given to Lebron for even developing a shooting touch and tracking with the three point average.
Steph still won titles DURING Bron peak tho
Who won titles during the peak Michael era?
Shaq at the time was a big talent lol
Also wouldn’t have to criticize Shaq for leaving the Magic to go Hollywood. Who is to say the Magic couldn’t have added a few more pieces to make them the heir apparent after Jordan left?

100% wouldn't have gotten the grace that he did taking that sabattical nowadays

Especially with social media and the rumors behind that decision at the time...

Would've become a circus real quick
Some discredit the 2020 chip because Bron and AD had a few months to be healthy before resuming play :frown:

Meanwhile, Jordan is mystical because he quit for 2 years

This is why it's pointless to compare across generations. Players like Bird and MJ wouldn't be shooting less than two 3PT attempts per game if they played today

I agree with all this, but I also think the competition in MJ’s era was a lot better than some people think. Guys like Alvin Robertson, Michael Copper, Joe Dumars, Dennis Johnson, to name a few, would be high level defenders in today’s NBA.

With all due respect to the late great Dennis Johnson but he was on the floor when MJ was getting 50 a night against the Celtics. It’s only so much you can do at 6’2”. Especially when you had to hard double but we can dissect that another day

Y’all in here talking WILD.

THREE-Peating and retiring = quitting? Dhalsim much?

And it’s not like MJ was just at the crib chilling, he went to play another sport, which he and his pops talked about, and he would’ve done after the second title if he wasn’t talked into returning to go for three.

Fact of the matter is Mike won more in less time with less help, and without the major blemishes.

Lebron stacked the deck in Miami, and then wet the bed in the biggest moment, while all of his “help” did their job. You CAN NOT be the “greatest of all time” after that.

MJ was never upset in the playoffs, while lebron was upset 3 years in a row from 09-11.

This “debate” is as legit as a unicorn.

I guess you all need something to discuss until October…

everyone talks about the skillset and athleticism of todays players vs 80s and 90s... it was also a lot harder to score back in the day because the defense was more physical compared to todays game... and MJ averaging 30 plus in the 90s without really shooting 3's tells you how dominant he was... can you imagine in todays game no defense played every foul being called he would be feasting...

Who in MJs era was as good as KD, Steph, Kawhi, Jokic?

Magic was old. He did beat Zeke what the third time? I mess with Barkley but he wasn’t better than Dirk who lebron lost too. Shaq was young. Never faced Hakeem. We don’t respect Malone as a human. Drexler was good but he isn’t a goat

Gassing Kawhi off of that one playoff run, he belongs nowhere near those other names.

This was literally MJ’s 2nd game of his entire career against the reigning DPOY (Moncrief) and they couldn’t do nothing with him. Just listen to the announcers. They are awestruck. To say his competition was as good as Lebrons is crazy. Lebron would have made these dudes heads explode. MJ was ahead of his time, but we must admit his time ain’t these times
