I do think that Americans do have some strange and overly zealous views on adolescent sex. In most industrialized nations, the age of consent is either lower than 18 and regardless of the age of consent, the social and legal sanctions for adults who have sex with adolescents is far, far less severe then in the United States. In addition, those industrialized countries other than the United States still have harsh penalties for anyone who actually molests a child, which is how the laws should be. There is major distinction between an adult having sex with children and an adult having sex with teenagers, it's just that the US is the country that pretends that no such distinction exists.

Now, is it a pervery and trashy thing for a 30 something man to even flirting with, let alone be having sex with a 14 or 15 year? You bet. Now, in my early 30's I don't usually find women below the drinking age especially sexy, let alone women below the voting age. At the same time, if a 30 year old man has sex with 16 year old, who is not his student or employee or otherwise under his supervision or power, then the law should not punish either party. It should be akin to those who do their furry suit thing. It's weird and gross but shouldn't considered criminal.

Also, let's think back to when we were in high school. If you were able to be intimate with an over 18 women, I doubt that you guys did or would have felt victimized or violated. I would know since I survived the trauma of being a statutory "rape" "victim," twice when I was 17 years old. Common sense would say that neither 17 year old nor the 18 year old were victims or criminals but the laws says just that and thankfully, the law was not enforced and those young women did not have their lives ruined for the legal system.


With that broader social commentary out of the way. Roy Moore is still a hypocrite and all around horrible person. This episode also shows two things. One is that conservatives are shamelessly inconsistent because they considered Anthony Weiner to be pervert and pedophile for sexting with young women who was older than Roy Moore's victim. It is also crystal clear that Roy Moore broke the laws and yet no one is calling him an "illegal." How is it that when someone violates immigration laws, conservatives will refer to that person as an "illegal" and reduce their humanity to an abstract and bureaucratic label and yet a Roy Moore does not draw this distinction? Could it be that the fixation on the violation of immigration laws by migrants from the global south has much more to with their origins in the global south rather than their violation of immigration laws?

It seems tho, that that this outstanding conservative god fearing individual had a certain proclivity for teenagers, in his defense he mostly made a habit out of creeping out 16-17-18 year olds, buuuuut... he still did make a 14 yo touch his yeah... you know what. So while we can think up all kinds of alternative timelines and universes, this guy seems to test our attempts to portrait his misgiving as harmless or even legal.

Then again, looking past his kiddie diddling tendencies, this guy is a total maniac, should not hold a higher office, be allowed to own motor vehicles or the firearms, he so enjoys brandishing in public.
