The Official NBA Collective Bargaining Thread vol Phased in Hard Cap

How many votes do the players need to decertify again?

I think most people see the sense in accepting 50-50 right now but it's not like that's the one thing keeping a deal at bay. There's other stuff the players are ticked about.

I can see Fish and co rallying the votes to decertify. The players seem like they're on that rather-die-standing-than-live-on-my-knees pride. Looking to prove a point. They don't want the owners "controlling" their livelihoods anymore.

Was reading about what the potential decert process would be. The months each step would take...

This would bleed into 2012-13 season easily if not beyond.

It's amazing how the small market teams have basically put us on the brink of losing a season. Do the small market owners have reason to demand changes? Yeah. But you do that through system changes--a less robust MLE, lower guaranteed K's, greater ability to keep superstars, etc. Demanding a 47/53 BRI isn't going to make them more competitive. It's simply a wealth transfer to make up for their poor investments.

There are numerous solutions that would easily allow small market teams to be more competitive/make more $$.
Solution1: Contract 4-5 teams (leads to more competitive teams and diminishes the number of teams losing $$; plus, some of these markets clearly can't support an NBA team)
Problem: players won't agree to losing 60 jobs; Stern's pride/legacy won't allow him to consider contraction

Solution2: Allow star players to make what they're worth ($20-25 million/yr); you will no longer have 2-3 stars on any one team and greater parity will be achieved
Problem: the rank/file NBA player isn't going to vote to take a paycut (despite being grossly overpaid)

Solution 3: Greater revenue sharing
Problem: the handful of large-market owners making $$ see no reason to further subsidize these small market teams, when some of these franchises will almost NEVER make a profit

The players are nearly as much at fault. Taking a "principled" stand over $2-300m is ridiculous when you'll lose more than when the whole season is lost. They have zero leverage.

Michael Jeffrey Jordan finally found a cause he can get behind off the court: being an obstacle for any black kid dreaming of matching or exceeding Jordan’s wealth.

I'm sorry but that's the kind of attitude that doesn't even make me want to read the rest of an article.

1) If a kid is dreaming of surpassing Jordan as a businessman and making money playing basketball, that kid shouldn't be playing ball, he should be in school. He should be more concerned about matching or exceeding Jordan's skill and success. I know we've talked about LeBron's marketability, Kobe's marketability, in comparison to Jordan, but in sports-fans eyes, you're remembered for your success on-court. It's why we remember guys like Robert Horry for being clutch for years and not being the main guy.
2) Not trying to be a "wacist," but why's it have to be a black kid? Should it matter what kind of player were to achieve this?

^once i saw that it was a Whitlock article, i stopped reading. aside from all the "shock journalism" pieces he's written in the past, this and the last article throwing derek fisher under the bus based off speculation and without hard proof just cements his hack-dom

I typically detest Whitlock but aside from maybe 1 sentence, I'd call that one pretty much right on point. If we have a season, and the Bobcats come to town, I'll do my damnedest to get some 114A (behind the visitor's bench) ticket and heckle the #!%% out of him if he makes the trip. It is also pretty well known, although somewhat swept under the rug or certainly not as scrutinized as other players, that he is a butthole of epic proportions.

ummm whitlock is 100 percent right

MJ is a degenerate. he's a vile piece of %#%% that hasn't ever stood up for anything

the league has been taken over by small markets. david stern has over expanded and wont take any of the blame. this league is poorly run and there are days where i hope it shuts down

Owners are basically trying to eliminate tax paying teams from competing with free agents by restricting their MLE and S & T use.

And pertaining to that 49-51% sliding band, Kessler said that it would take the “wildest, most unimaginable, favorable projections
