Anyone here use gambling as a possible source of income on a regular basis?

A couple of my boys gamble on a regular basis at the local casino.  I rolled with them the other night and I witnessed them each lose 200-300  dollars each. I was tripping on how casual they were about losing that kinda cash. Im not in a position to lose 300 dollars and be ok with it. As a person who doesnt gamble, I was curious about why they gambled every week.  They both pretty much said the same thing about them winning on other days big enough to make it worth the days that they dont win.  One of em even said that they use a % of what they make at their job specifically for gambling and that he considers that part of his income.

I dont know much about the gambling world but i was under the impression that people generally lose more than they win if hey gamble over extended periods of time.

Anyone here have any input on personal history of you or your friends gambling habits? Im very curious about peoples motives when it comes to "serious" gambling.

Thanks

Yes, I know people who base the majority of their income on gambling.

Depends what type of "gambling" you're referring to.

Are they playing table games only? If so, in the end the money will even out and/or they will lose. The only way to really make money on table games is to have a huge roll to start, and to get hot. Very hot, and then quit playing forever.

Poker, that's a different story.

Sports, also a completely different story. But much harder than one would imagine, the amount of bets you need to make and the amount of $ you need to start with to even THINK about living off gambling $ is insane. I'm talking 100k as a roll, and making hundreds even thousands of bets a year. And stay disciplined AND hitting over 58%. There are few people in the world that can live comfortably off betting, and almost none that have done it coming from nothing. If you're a millionaire to start, sure, it's possible. But it's more likely that you lose your millionaire status before you hit 2x millionaire status, unless you've put years and years of work into it.

Losing 200-300 a week at the casino, or even winning 200-300 a week at the casino is nothing. You can't survive off that, and that's why your friends work 9 to 5 jobs still.

What do you consider "something" if 200-300 is nothing?  I still work a 9-5 and get paid nicely.  I work damn hard for my money too.  I lost a 20 dollar bill last month in the street somehow and i was heated.

In college I lived off online poker and sports gambling. If you really know what you doing and with a little luck, you could survive off it. I mean I would lose a couple hundred here and there but other times I would make like 4K in a night, take out 3.5K and I could be comfortable for a while.

I'm just saying in terms of value or living value, winning/losing 200-300 a week is nothing.

That equates to about 11k on the low end, 16k on the high end. Who lives nicely off that? The stress that comes along with gambling wouldn't make 11k-16k worth it whatsoever.

I suppose if you're working a 9-5 where you make 75k-100k a year, and you need to relieve stress so you USE gambling as a way of relieving yourself (in which case it'd be even harder to win unless you've been doing it for years and years and have mastered a method) then yeah, 11k or 16k wouldn't be a bad win/loss...but still if you lose that 11k-16k, you're more than likely to go on "tilt" and lose more...

Just saying that what your friends are winning or losing isn't enough to live on - which I thought you had mentioned in the initial post but mis-read, I see you just meant "added income"...still you have to devote A LOT of your time to truly win at it. I don't think it's possible to work a 9-5 job and gamble, if you want to have any sort of social life whatsoever.

As far as you losing the $20, money is worth what you deem it to be worth. I can't ever imagine getting mad about losing a $20 dollar bill, or losing any sort of bet I place, whether I was rich or poor because I lost it and now it's gone. I can understand that you work hard for your $ so it's upsetting to let a few hours of work go to waste, but in the end...it's gone. No sense getting upset about it or stressing myself out - at all. Of course we all struggle to deal with that ideology...

Yeah, there's no way this guy risked 18,000 on Lakers ML...although...there are a lot of idiots out there that are clueless and ignorant towards gambling so...maybe

yeah i think its my personal view of working for that paycheck.  Im gettin it done financially so every cent i can save is a plus for me and my lady in the long run.  It was just a shock to me seeing what i consider a good amount of cash just gone when my friends lost it and for them to not really trip out.
